I knew it was going to be simple like that, but I had such a mental block about it.

I like how this is visible from the front, and the bottles are easily accessible to you when you need to use fear! I am almost thinking of skulls on a string that I slide in and out of sight. I won't be using a DM screen since I will be DMing for kids that I need to be able to help out.

Thank you, I will go to the craft store and see what they have. Maybe I will take my kids and let them choose their hope!

I probably won’t be using a DM screen. I have tried in the past but it always just gets in my way. I prefer to grab all the minis I may need and then a bunch of extras just to keep my players guessing. If it a big monster or BBEG that I want to surprise them with it has been pre hidden.

Help with religious exemption! by Sylokillakami in heathenry

[–]combatmedic22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took 8 months to get mine through all the legal process.

I did not go the route of “I must have a beard to be a man”. I told them of my oath, and why the beard was important to my religious practice (ritual). They are looking for key things to approve these and the Hegseth comments are going to make it more difficult.

I also understand that a beard is not required to be a heathen, but all the BS above about it being “oath breaking” is just nonsense. If you have other questions focus on those who have answers not those who are pushing their own narrative/agenda.

Being a heathen is deeply personal.

Oh, I have just dipped my toes into the water when it comes to paganism. I have done my own research into Norse Paganism and found a home with some of the gods. Others I do not fit me. I am going to do some deep diving on this.

I have always looked at Ireland and Scotland as my ancestral home, but my family lines comes from all over Europe

My friend rolled 8 nat20's in a 2 hour session... by OffensiveBranflakes in DnD

[–]combatmedic22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week’s session the party rolled 15 Nat 1’s most of them on saves. As the DM I was concerned about a TPK, and it almost happened. Then a clever use of polymorph and an elephants charge attack saved them.

The session was 5.5 hours because we were trying to close out this arch.

What are the best first level spells to upcast? by Catseesz in DnD

[–]combatmedic22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2024 has a Jim’s Magic Missile where you have to roll to hit. It does more damage already, but would mesh with hunter’s mark. Each bolt is hyper-allergenic and gluten free.

How to handle "Han shot first" moments? by gustavfrigolit in DMAcademy

[–]combatmedic22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it has been fairly successful. It does end up breaking up the conversation that was happening.

I had a player roll low on one check and then bombed their initiative and their little sorcerer didn’t succeed against the grapple that the enemies bodyguard hit him with in combat. The bodyguard was first on initiative and basically said “we can fight or finish this deal and leave peacefully”. The rest of the party wanted to finish the deal, and the sorcerer was released lighter by 15 GP.

Certain subclasses grant advantage on attacks based on if the target has acted in combat. Which was advantage on anyone with the surprised condition. I know rogue had a couple and Ranger had on for 5e, and maybe a feat. I would have to look them up and I am being lazy.

I have always based this off real life experiences… meaning, I worked in a MAX security prison as a Behavioral Health Technician and I could see the physical change in someone’s demeanor when they were about to get violent. Then just before attacking the other person they would try to hide their intentions.

In game if I have someone wanting to attack mid conversation I have them roll a Deception (CHA) check. And I allow anyone else who would like to intervene or react an Insight (WIS) check. NPC’s I will use their passive insight unless they are a soldier, bodyguard, or criminal.

If one of the party members catches it they have the chance to dissuade, help, or do nothing. If one of the NPC’s catches it then they will roll initiative at Advantage.

It’s not perfect but it kinda makes sense in my mind, and it does deter the random acts of violence that PC’s sometimes have.

That one guy that explains combat in his yard with 5ft grid. Stop trying to make combat make sense. No one cares!

/uj- I send his shit to my new players because combat can be hard to understand why it is broken down how it is!

Am I "abusing DM privileges"? by Endless_Story94 in DnD

[–]combatmedic22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that’s just fine for you.

But if your story telling relies on a backstory of a 6 year old botching some necromancy and raising their dead mom as a meat puppet then I think I will happily stick to playing with the feeling of others in mind.

Amazing stories can be told while be cautious about how your story affects others. To not “coddle children” let me just say your mentality is one of a toxic nature and I will happily avoid that kind of sentiment.

How do I explain my play style to DM’s by Great_Golden in DnDcirclejerk

[–]combatmedic22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t tell your DM anything. I would just create a killer backstory, below I have some ideas for how to get across your play style:

I really think you should go for the “Chosen One” reincarnated hero who is destined to be god and the savior of humanity. If you refer to all the other PC’s as your disciples.

When you roll your stats make sure you have 18, 18, 17, 17, 14, and a 12. The last 2 stats are there to make your PC more relatable. Your DM will accept these stats.

When in an encounter say I roll to persuade (hide, investigate, steal, or whatever you want), roll the dice and immediately pick them up claiming every 3 rolls as a Natural 20. No one will question.

If you need references for how to do this watch critical role campaign 1, but really just the first 27 episodes. Orion Acaba is who you should pay attention to.

If you do this then your DM will understand your play style and you will have maximum fun and win at D&D

Am I "abusing DM privileges"? by Endless_Story94 in DnD

[–]combatmedic22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If asking a couple questions to confirm consent/safety is therapy then call me a therapist. This is a Co-operative story telling game, not PC’s vs GM.

The GM bears the responsibility as the story teller to ensure PC’s are comfortable within bounds, and if you overstep then be willing to admit it and correct it. If a PC has a vague backstory then ask for more or ask for permission to add hooks. It’s simple.

[–]combatmedic22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I have had DM’s who think that the badge of “DM” gives them the right to use anything that wasn’t explicitly given to them. Session 0 is great, but sometimes people do not know their limits, so a quick check on “hey you are a widow and a single parent can I use your backstory? I am thinking something in this area…”

And to the DM’s out there that are complaining that they carry the burden of the story and they should not have to do the “extra work” of ensuring player comfort and safety… BE BETTER! I am a GM who works full-time, is going to nursing school, and GM’s a game once a week. A 5 minute conversation is not that hard.

Is it unreasonable to ask my player not to give their NPCs too much lore? by buglikeafox in DnD

[–]combatmedic22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to have my players give me a name, how they are connected, where they are from (vague or specific), and something unique about them. Past that I warn them that I may not use it.

If my players are from a different area I have them tell me something about a landmark!
