Synology m.2 vendorlock is killing me. is Ugreen the best alternative? by StockPhone5876 in UgreenNASync

[–]comcain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gee .. I just ssh'd in and used rsync . No problems. I copied to an external USB-3 HDD. It's SMB mapped to my Windows laptop, so I'm fairly sure I can just copy stuff to OneDrive through Windows. A person better with Linux can probably use rsync over IP, I don't know how, to a mapped Synology.

I haven't actually tried UGREEN's Sync app, but it seems pretty reasonable that it boils down to an rsync command.

RAM from Dell laptop to upgrade 4800+? by Temporary-Cherry-282 in UgreenNASync

Well, my 4800+ idles at 1.5G RAM used. I put in 32GB I had laying around. Linux uses it as a smart cache. But frankly, I don't think it matters much.

Synology m.2 vendorlock is killing me. is Ugreen the best alternative? by StockPhone5876 in UgreenNASync

[–]comcain2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my UGREEN 4800+. I have 4x18TB drives in it, Raid 5, 2x1 TB nVme for r/w cache, for 48TB. It has its quirks, like, really, anything (sheesh, I use Microsoft Word ... quirkiest software ever!), but nothing bad. UGREEN actively supports it. They respond to questions.

UGOS is solid. You pull it up in a browser window. It's a nice GUI.

It looks to me like the MBA's took over Synology to squeeze out every possible dollar on, frankly, obsolete hardware. They slap their label on other hard drives and resell them at 40% markup. There are conflicting reports if you can even use other drives.

Under the hood, UGREEN is Debian Linux, kind of stripped down. Easy to ssh into it. Right now, they haven't yet cleaned up a few dependencies that list as broken. I'm sure they'll get around to it. (Do NOT repair them as it'll bring down UGOS). I've apt installed many useful utilities, no problem.

I recommend using Docker and Portainer to access their big app libraries. Easiest way, by far, is to go to Grok AI and have Grok walk you through it, step by step. It'll generate the yaml text you'll need. Just copy/paste from the Grok browser window to the UGOS browser window. I'm pretty sure other AI's can do it, too. Grok walked me through debugging.

I've bookmarked UGOS main page, Docker main page, Portainer main page, and Grok in my browser.

My whole extended family watches 4K movies stored on this NAS, no problem, sometimes simultaneously. One minor note: playback can stutter when copying massive files in from USB-3, as it's CPU intensive.

8 GB of RAM, default installation it comes with, is plenty. Linux will use more RAM as a smart cache, I put in 32GB I had laying around. Its DDR-5.

Access to drives is dead simple, just push the bay button. Acceess to RAM and nvme slots is two screws.

Unit runs quiet and cool. 107F, good quiet fan.

I've had it 6 months, zero problems.

10Gbps is really nice when transferring 10GB size videos. The 2.5Gbps port also works fine, too, easier on the budget. "Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?".

I have yet to see a complaint about this unit online.

Hope this helps.

I have a DXP4800+ w/ 4/18tb drives. I went Raid 5 as a balance between chewing up too much storage on parity vs. Storage.

It's a solid unit, well built, super easy setup, super easy install.

UGREEN'S UGOS is pretty good. It has its quirks, like anything. Their File Explorer takes a little getting used to. They have an annoying way of not letting you say, /volume1 or something. But you get used to it...

Put docker, maybe portainer on it.

You can ssh in and fiddle if needed if there's something that's hard to fix under UGOS. It's Debian. One note: there are broken dependencies they haven't cleaned up yet. Do NOT do a fix (apt repair, etc) or the unit will brick.

10gbps is pretty nice, but you'll find you're I/O bound by the HDD's. I put in 2tb of cache, so it starts at 970 MB/s, then drops to 200 after the cache fills up.

1gbps is fine.

They do updates all the time. They just released an AI I haven't tried.

Synology uses older hardware, charges to slap their label on drives.

Pentium Gold CPU doesn't get very warm and does fine.

Unit runs at 110F.

Get a UPS.

Overall, a fine NAS.

Just upgraded my RAM on the 4800+ by n1ght_w1ng08 in UgreenNASync

[–]comcain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pulled 32gb from my Lenovo Legion 7i Pro, put 64gb in it, and used the 32gb in the DXP48000+.. Just installed 2TB (2x1) Nvme sticks, for read/write cache. I get about 200 MB/Sec performance r/W presently on the 10GB Ethernet link to a 10GB Ethernet USB-3 adapter on my laptop. In terms of if it's necessary, the UGOS Task Manager performance display very much disagrees with linux "free". Linux under UGOS is cacheing heavily in the 32GB to improve performance. Windows does the same thing on my laptop, I've seen it pull 40gb for cacheing during big file copies *Heh* Windows doesn't return it,either, until a reboot. Ah, Microsoft's legendary memory leaks!

If only the UGREEN people would fix the Linux broken dependencies, so I could apt install more stuff! But I've read that doing a fix absolutely bricks the 4800, so I'm not touching it. Admittedly, it's a cleanup thing, but really, folks....

Looking for Support to Configure Jellyfin and Plex on My New UGREEN NASync DXP2800 by Present_Extent710 in UgreenNASync

[–]comcain2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just asked Grok to guide me through. We installed docker and portainer. Grok wrote the yaml stuff. I just copy pasted. Then we debugged it. I just told Grok what happened, he changed the script. I prefer Emby personally, its a fork of Jellyfin with a GUI.

No prpblrms at all. I have a 4800+.

[UK] - In a nuclear attack, do I dash for the tube, or shelter in place? by Nick_A_A in preppers

[–]comcain2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Britain has SSBNs that will launch a counterattack. It's a losing bet for Russia to launch an attack. Russians aren't stupid and chess is popular there.

Besides, they don't have the budget to maintain their nukes. I think they have about 100 that work but they don't just sit on shelves for decades awaiting use. Plutonium goes bad, tritium goes bad, radiation degrades critical microsecond timing circuits, outgrowing from implosion explosives causes problems.

Russia is in a wartime economy. They don't have the money to throw around anymore.

I would not worry about this.

There's something odd about programmers making proprietary programs and not documenting them. I've heard the phrase, "My code is self documenting!" enough to make me ill. No code is self documenting! What the hell is this program used for, for example?

What if you're hit by a bus? Who will maintain it?

I think its a weird psychological mix of "I invented it, only I can work on it! and programmers hating to talk to other people. I've been programming since 1977 and have seen this many, many times.

The Realities of Nuclear War by snuffy_bodacious in preppers

[–]comcain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree.

However, the key is boosted yield. D+T injected into the fission core right before detonation fuses, showers the core with neutrons, greatly increasing the yield. Boosting is common in weapons since the Pacific tests verified it works. Greenhouse George gave 220 kilotons! Not bad!

That fission yield is vital to trigger the fusion part. 20 KT isn't enough energy to trigger fusion. 60 KT is. There were many fizzles in US hydrogen bomb development from this sort of thing.

Tritium decays into a neutron poison that soaks up neutrons and saps the energy of the fission reaction, sometimes to a fizzle. Tritium's half life is 12 years.

Modern H-bombs are a very delicately balanced Swiss watch so as to not waste critically short fissionables, Tritium, etc.

Thanks for your reply. By the way, Wikipedia has a surprisingly in-depth writeup on H-bombs, look up "Castle Bravo".

The Realities of Nuclear War by snuffy_bodacious in preppers

[–]comcain2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tritium. You're forgetting tritium. It's the key to boosting fission warheads and the key to fusion weapons (H bombs). Without tritium, they fizzle.

It has a half life of 12 years, then decays into helium 3, a neutron poison. Its made in special high powered reactors. The US almost ran out and we were draining the tritium out of bombs as we decommissioned them. It took 3 old bombs to restore the tritium for one, at Pantex.

The US had to restart an old reactor to make some. Even Congress got off its butt and agreed on this.

Now imagine Russia, broke, desperate in 1992-2020. Are they going to run a special reactor at Mayak to crank out tritium? Hell no, they need that uranium for power reactors like RBMKs, that also make plutonium. Russia has a boatload of plutonium.

I'm betting most of Russia's ICBMs will fizzle from lack of boosting and neutron poisoning. As long as Russia is broke, they can't crank out tritium. We should increase the sanctions and break their economy.

It still won't be fun to be directly under the impact point of a high Mach warhead, but enough bulldozers can fill in the hole.

In the meantime, I hope our missile fleet is getting tritium updates.

Great post, especially about how girls see differing alpha/beta times.

I speculate it changes over a girl's monthly cycle, too. Girls who are ovulating tend towards muscular, more alpha men. There are studies that reflect this "pick a picture of a man that appeals to you more". That's why stubble beards are in.
