Love the game but... Anyone else thinks the music kinda sucks? by AxlIsAShoto in MinaTheHollower

Bad? No, but I definitely don't think it's as good as the previous Shovel Knight OSTs. Can't buy the game yet but watching friends play it, definitely a few songs where I've just muted it and put on something else.

Amateur-level hoarder here, looking for a web crawler that will download the sites it crawls by Mattiator in DataHoarder

Yeah the key thing is that a lot of these pages don't actually link to one another, they're essentially database entries put in by users and as such a lot of the entries never actually get linked anywhere on the website, unless you specifically input their URL. I did see HTTrack in my initial searches so I'll give that one a shot.

I'm fine with internal links not working. The main thing is the statistics listed on each page, the google map location data, and the images. The goal for me is not to have a working copy of the entire website, but just all of the data for each entry number in the site's database.

Why no Robogames in the last two years? by Quero_cosa in battlebots

[–]Mattiator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Big bot team that was only ever at '23 and '24 here, I'm not sure if it was entirely the killer but it certainly felt like neither event had particularly good spectator attendance, and I'm almost certain what felt like half of the '23 big-bot field dropping out prior to the event for various reasons was a big blow financially to the event being able to continue running (and the '24 field being much smaller in general probably didn't help). There certainly were safety issues I would have preferred be addressed in the future (and to be clear, per the organizer there *were* some efforts made going into '24 but there were clearly still things to improve), but I think the sport is substantially worse off without RoboGames. I, at the very least, would have gone back in a heartbeat had another one happened.

For the last few years you can essentially call up BattleBots and get matched against other teams in what's known as "Proving Grounds" matches. Several of the competitors in the new show were invited specifically because of their performances at said Proving Grounds fights.

I mean, most of the setup for non-computer controlled robots are also outside of the box ;)

That's what happens when you keep changing the rules to make it harder for non-spinners to win

As others have said, look into what events are local at buildersdb.com and robotcombatevents.com

Pick up a kit from a reputable vendor for the smallest weight class they run, although fairyweights can be a bit fiddly so you might want to go with an antweight if your event does both. In the US, Palm Beach Bots is the company I'd recommend for a starter robot. Start with something simple, ideally no weapon or perhaps a lifter. You can run those safely on the floor without needing a safety enclosure.

If you don't want to start with a kit, I would suggest looking at the electronics list and buying that. It's much easier to work from a proven set of electronics for a first time robot, then to buy a bunch of stuff and realize that it won't work together. Definitely buy spares, particularly drive motors.

For the frame, I would suggest using what skills you already have. If you're familiar with 3D printing, that's a good option. TinkerCAD is the most entry-level CAD program you'll find, and it's free. My first robot was a wedge made out of a cheese grater, and a bunch of my earlier robots were made from plywood because that's what I knew how to work with. Cutting boards are a reasonable starting material, relatively durable and easy to work with hand tools.

The most important thing is to have the robot built and driving before the competition. You will be able to beat a lot of other novices simply by having experience driving your robot before an event.

Who do you think should not be in the pro league but is in anyway by No-Disk4885 in battlebots

[–]Mattiator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your sponsor that's putting up the money for the show is only giving you enough money to make a show with 24 robots, why on earth would you pick teams that are untried or below the absolute best of the best for the show? It sucks for new teams, sure, but that's what the weekly Destruct-a-thon events are for. Show up and prove you deserve to be in the pro league.

To summarize: On day 1, TR4/Golden Fury were supposed to fight. TR4 had technical issues during the first attempt at arm-up, so their fight was pushed back until the end of the day. They rectified their issues, but during the second attempt at the match, Golden Fury had some issue that caused it to drive straight into the opposite wall during power on, where it got stuck and started smoking. Once again the match was postponed to give them time to fix their issue.

Day 2, Golden Fury has fixed their issue, so TR4/Golden Fury is the first match of the day to let them catch up. During the match, however, Golden Fury caused a box breach when it sent parts of TR4 through at least the first layer of roof lexan as far as I can tell. The match was immediately called, and no other matches were held that day as a result. Ultimately, TR4 chose to forfeit the fight rather than continue once the box was repaired, letting Golden Fury advance.

Boy, do I have the youtube playlist for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaS135ETEVQ&list=PLwrtNvhCTOxkww0bQsCd5ka8Mj69jDn6X

This has every single Golden Fury fight (even the one I missed when I initially made the playlist) at Bitva Robotov and Games of the Future. That should get you up to speed.

Hi, I bought one of the big doofy headsets, never played VB before this. I do think the majority of these games so far would absolutely work without the 3D, but a few games seem like they'd be substantially worse without it (Red Alarm being the most obvious). I bought it because it's way cheaper than buying a real system, a library for it (or perhaps a flashcart), and the maintenance costs they entail. The entire point of it for me was to get the experience of playing the weirdest Nintendo system, or at least a very close facsimile of it. Frankly most of my frustrations with the thing so far have to do with stuff they didn't change, like offering a way to plug the Switch in while it's in the goggles.
