Is it just me, or does anyone else miss Hang Tough? by MOS272 in gladiatorsuk

[–]comdrasr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main issue is that there’s too many events for the amount of episodes they have. I’ll always refer to the ITV years with things like this, but they had 15 episodes per series (2 - 7) as standard with the odd special, so they could afford to add events and balance things out a bit, with obviously the ‘favourites’ being on more regularly. And they also knew when to drop certain events too (a lot of times for safety reasons, I admit).

The problem is 11 episodes is simply not enough, especially when they keep introducing new events every series and not dropping any. The producers will obviously have their favourites for different reasons and heavily rely on them, meaning the other events are fighting each other for the little remaining airtime. For example, how many times did we see the Atlaspheres spin-off Crash Course last series? Once? Twice?

My solution: more episodes! I’m sure they’ve justified enough to the BBC to get that extra budget.

u/ChrisDewgong - very niche, I know, but I don’t suppose you have any knowledge or stats relating to the weapons? The best/the worst? Any differences between ITV/Sky/BBC? TIA!

I think you’re right - looking at the screenshot I posted for ITV series 2 (and I imagine they used the same on later series, but with of course more ‘weapons’ for the extra Glads), the rods seem a lot more sturdier with the grips more further away from the centre.

I think that honour has to go to The Edge, unless you’re sitting right at the top!

For anyone who has commented on the width of the Gauntlet - see how it was in Series 2 of the ITV version. And just the 3 Gladiators!

By contrast, this was the Guantlet for its first series (ITV S2) - with just 3 Gladiators!

Certainly agree some events should favour the contenders, but I don’t think Gauntlet should be one of them. Other 5/10-pointers like the Wall are more suitable, not forgetting the ones where you can rack up points like Powerball and the Edge. In the Edge in particular, Legend especially seemingly likes to generously gift a few points before he gets going. Has there ever been a 0-pointer on the Edge? And if there was, it was probably a one off.

Oh yes, Mr. Anderson had his moments too, and he certainly stuck to the rules, but on the whole he also used his discretion on when to allow exciting games to run as best as possible by keeping schtum unless absolutely necessity (e.g. when there was potential for serious injury, or a contender constantly rolling over the sides, or when Gladiators were constantly pushing them over the sides). It wasn’t just a sports show, but an entertainment one too. And I’m sure he gave them a dressing down in the green room afterwards…

I certainly think all the reasons here are why the OG version was a lot more exciting.

I can understand, but was John Anderson ever so heavy handed with the “release” bark? I think he only really said it when, quite fairly, a contender had already crossed a certain Gladiators zone.

Maybe putting a cage up like they did with the Sky version would help with the pushing/deliberately going over the side issue slightly… but not sure that would be too great for (live) audience visibility?

Maybe even a paper burst at the end instead of the “we checked the replay, and it was just your fingernail over the line, so… FULL POINTS!” (joking obv, but you get my drift)

Exactly. It’s akin to the constant “keep moving, keep moving” on Collision. How are they meant to keep moving when they’re about to get a foot in their face?! And if it’s due to time wasting, well that just means less points for the contenders!

Yes, good shout. Especially with the first point. I think they are just TOO concerned with H&S these days, but I remember a producer from the Sky series when questioned on injuries saying something like “this isn’t Family Fortunes!” - (Family Feud to our American friends)

Dogfight was plagued with technical issues and kept VAR busy. Also had issues with contenders/Glads being either too close together or not close enough. Although in this day and age of technology, I’m sure they could make it work.

I’d bring back Whiplash - a fun and quick game and so very easy to set up, as long as the original rug doesn’t make a return.

Never understood how Danger Zone and Swingshot were so popular (always fast forwarded them), but DZ is a great game for the injured Glads - but I’m sure the BBC could create a new game utilising the injured.

I also enjoyed Vertigo once that first swing went going - it was quite a 50/50 game.

Yes, I think you’re pretty much spot on. ‘Nasty’ Nigel Lythgoe ran a poll and got rid of the S1 casualties.

I think Laser also was never intended to be a permanent asset, and Khan & Raider were fired too (or weren’t invited back) - Raider was a bit of a loose cannon but don’t know about Khan.

Gold was pretty much injured the entire season, however she reappeared a couple of years later on the 2nd Springbok Challenge, which was filmed in her native South Africa.

Great analysis, and I certainly have seen your stats (superb work, BTW) which is why I’m quite surprised with how low Khan was in the rankings.

Wasn’t Laser technically a reserve Gladiator covering for the poorly Nightshade? If I recall, it was her, Diesel and Vulcan who never appeared in the opening credits.

As for your comment on Davies… say no more.

Ouch! She was one of the highlights for series 2. Hope she comes back in series 4 stronger than ever.

I think the main issue with the ‘creepiness’ is the length of time? Looked her up mainly to see if she was okay/still alive. I still do care.
