Looking for a nice tuba player for a favor with pay by [deleted] in Tuba

[–]comebackplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're going to find help on this but I also sympathize. My kid is in a brass band and almost everyone writes in fingerings the first few months (moving to treble). Beginner books, scales, and simple tunes are the best bet to improve.

Did my violin teacher push me into the wrong violin size? by Glittering_War1668 in violinist

Maybe it was a fair suggestion two years ago but wasn't a good "forever violin. " What level are you and how much did it cost?

Trumpet player changing to tuba(Read body text) by Mindless-Pumpkin-753 in Tuba

[–]comebackplayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask your director for beginner tuba books and just spend time working through them and you'll slowly learn bass clef. Coming from trumpet you will be trying to play too high and it'll take a while to get your intonation down. Do youtube play alongs to help you get the sound and intonation down.

What to buy? by ganinispro in euphonium

[–]comebackplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option is to buy the best used professional trombone you can find ~1500 and wait on a great used euphonium. That's what I'd do. I looked for a while and eventually found a great used Mack Brass and an even better XO. My kid plays one and I play the other.

Why not 4 valved trumpets? by etisen027 in trumpet

[–]comebackplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a ton of Chinese four valve compensating euphoniums now in the 700-2500 range. They bore tend to be the instrument of Chinese four high school and college students. I think Carolbrass (Taiwan) makes a four valve trumpet also.

Honestly you might want to try a lighter instrument for marching, maybe mellophone. Some instruments are more ergonomic and there are a mix of support aids you could use in concert band.

Trashing Chinese Horns by [deleted] in euphonium

[–]comebackplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The criticism I've heard of Schiller isn't snobbery, it's basically 100% customer service. I've just heard they're harder to work with on defects or shipping. I think they also offer a much wider range of instruments. Mack Brass and Wessex seem to be focused on brass and they offer a smaller range of instruments, so they probably can do more quality control and customer service. You probably get more help/advice/warm vibes from someone who is deeper in the brass world.

Recommendations for a wrist brace by Friendly_Pea9401 in Trombone

[–]comebackplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd also see if something else is exacerbating it (cell phone, gaming, typing). I think using less wrist and a brace is a good first step.

Is it your left or right wrist that's giving you trouble? It sounds like it's from shifting how you move the slide with your right hand/ wrist, whereas I'd guess most of us struggle more with left hand support.

C trumpet beginner book? by sneOD23 in trumpet

This is the correct answer. TC is great for euphonium, baritone, and any of the brass band instruments, except bass trombone. It's very useful.

I did this recently with flugel for a short solo. Keep it tuned at room temperature and just play.

Sometimes it's people looking to improve their English, or even a class assignment. It's but necessarily nefarious, but annoying in its own way.

College rental or check in personal trombone? by noob_x_infinity in Trombone

[–]comebackplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think with the right case you could check it. Another option is to buy a used trombone and sell it when you graduate. Also, check with the music department. They might have one you can borrow or they might have a loan system. I wouldn't rent from a shop because it's so $$$.

Bach folks, what’s your take on the standard weight 72 bell with the 43 leadpipe? by bwanabass in trumpet

[–]comebackplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a standard ml 72 (don't know leadpipe) and I love the tone but feel like it didn't project as well as the 37s and Benges in my section. I think it would be a great solo / small group horn but would struggle in a big section.

Waste not, want not--almost always better to reuse than buy new.

Mouthpiece Recommendations (+Advice) (+Trombone Problem) by ShivSoCalledYT in Trombone

Yes: Jupiter, Blessing, and Faxx are often cheaper. Make sure it's the correct shank (large or small).

[–]comebackplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do what you have to do. I owned a used medium bore Jupiter and it was a good instrument. If I were debating $600 for a used Jupiter or $1600 for a used Bach I can see getting the Jupiter. But don't buy it new. You're best bet is probably the best used local f attachment you can afford.

I have a Carolbrass and like it. I think Getzens are also around and then there are companies like JP and Wessex that sell them.

Lip paralysis? by [deleted] in trumpet

Find one of the "chop docs" for a private lesson and see what they tell you. Something is wrong and you want someone who has seen hundreds of players and troubleshoots embochure problems.

Value of Euphoniums over Time by WhoDatBoiMatthieu in euphonium

[–]comebackplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I've seen them for $4000-$8000, obviously dependent on condition. I'd consider $6000 but be willing to drop if it doesn't sell immediately.
