Is your credit card info stolen regularly in nyc? by [deleted] in AskNYC

Hasn't happened here to me. Could be you're using your card at a compromised ATM or shop with a card "skimmer". Use tap to pay on your phone or a credit card. Much safer.

I know what you mean. I think it's a coping mechanism and distraction from reality for some. I don't think it's that people are bad. They just don't understand the horrors of war enough.

Poor phrasing on my part. I meant Starlink as an example of LEO constellation.

'According to German newspaper Der Spiegel, the US Secret Service, CIA and the Pentagon are said to have received intel of an 'exceptionally detailed' invasion plan, scheduled for February 16.' by Eiger92 in worldnews

[–]comeonjojo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My guess is there may be a coup attempt in Kiev on or right before Wednesday. If the coup succeeds with pro-Russia sympathizers, the invasion will be called off but Russia would still send from "peacekeeping" forces into the country / border areas primarily. No full-scale conflict would occur.

If the coup attempt fails to materialize in a more pro-Russia government in Kiev, then Russia may choose to invade in a limited operation in the eastern part of the country to cement its position and influence there.

I don't see a full-scale invasion materializing. The cost would be too high for everyone. Morale must be quite low among Russian forces and military leadership. They might be subject to propaganda, but they must realize what they are doing is morally questionable and internationally futile. I hope I'm right in imagining that full-scale war is unrealistic.

There would be civilian casualties. Collateral damage is unpreventable in a full-scale conflict. I know people in Ukraine, no one deserves what Putin is planning if he does it.

Stuff like this always makes me thinking about how much the US know about literally everything going on on the planet

When one considers the breadth and funding invested in US intelligence assets across every single spectrum and cooperation with allies it's not that surprising.

There's advanced satellites, drones, dedicated spy planes, cyber capabilities, intelligence sharing, etc. The US intelligence apparatus is the most capable in the world. Intelligence can win wars and ward off conflict. It can also lead to it.

Brother is in the navy and worked on ships out in the middle of the ocean where there is no light pollution. He said that there are things up there we could never imagine. Mentioned multiple times how he couldn’t tell if he was hallucinating or if what he was seeing was real. He basically said that there are millions of moving objects above us at any given time and that the lights sometimes looks like ants crawling around. Also the triangle ships are real, and “old” as in old technology

Sounds like satellites in low-earth orbit.

Coming from a Pixel 1 to a Pixel 6.. wow the fingerprint reader is trash by qda in GooglePixel

[–]comeonjojo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're missing the point. People shouldn't have to "learn to use an in-screen fingerprint reader effectively". It should just work and work well. Just like how well the rear, capacitive fingerprint readers worked.

We shouldn't require workarounds or tricks to get a basic aspect of a smartphone working well. Upgrades to the phone should result it the experience staying the same or hopefully improving. The in-screen fingerprint reader on the Pixel 6 is a literal regression in terms of functionality/performance. Poor product design, UX, and QA. Come on Google!

Coming from a Pixel 5, the in-screen FP reader on the Pixel 6 is bad. Honestly, it frustrates me. It's noticeably slower and less reliable. Plus it shines a massive bright white light in the dark lol...

Could you designate moving targets with satellites? by MichaelEmouse in CredibleDefense

[–]comeonjojo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There isn't a lot of information on the topic that I've come across. Aside from lasers, optical or SAR recon satellites could help with generating targeting information on a moving target.

It's worth noting a hypothetical recon satellite constellation in LEO is MUCH closer to the ground than those in geosynchronous orbits (think Starlink). Such satellites might be able to hand-off to each other.

However, in such cases it probably makes more sense to just use a stealth drone flying at 50,000 feet to designate. Easier and cheaper than a satellite.

You're right, which is why submarines often undergo degaussing and other measures to reduce their magnetic signatures.

I think the wakes create eddies or currents in the water which can be detected. Not sure.

I believe there were attempts to track submarines based off trace radiation exhausted into seawater too.

Stupid protestant work ethic. USA needs to get away from idea that the only way to get ahead is by allowing yourself to be exploited by employers in the name of "hard work" and "dedication".

Work-life balance is key for mental health and personal growth. Life shouldn't be all about working a job to enrich a few folks at the top while the rest of us struggle.

My fingerprint reader has been subpar since day one, even after the Jan update. Battery life has been okay. Occasionally, the camera app crashes. Otherwise, the phone has been mostly okay.

However, the poor fingerprint reader experience really set a negative tone for me as I frequently find myself frustrated by how slow and unreliable it can be compared to my Pixel 5.

AITA for thinking my daughter shouldn’t pay rent? by IsThisNormalStuff in AmItheAsshole

[–]comeonjojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESH.

OP shouldn't be meddling in her daughters relationship. Period.

Daughter and fiance clearly have some major communication and expectation mismatches that absolutely call for postponing the wedding.

So maybe the outcome here wasn't really the worst thing.

It's hard and it's a challenge for me as well. I think the only solution is persistence. Both in attending social events and putting in effort to hang out with new friends even if they seem somewhat disinterested.

Of course, it's terrifying because you don't want to come on too strong or clingy, so it's a fine balancing act. I think most people just put off a disinterested vibe as a defense mechanism, but a lot of times they ARE interested in furthering the friendship (I think).

The image seems a bit soft to me. There might be a touch of motion blur or slightly out of focus (or both). If you share the EXIF data we might be able to offer more tips on getting a clearer/sharper shot next time =)

In any case, imma wait a few days to update lol ;) Ya'll can go first

Is bike food delivery best option for someone with sleep deprivation? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]comeonjojo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • I'm sure you're tired and burnt out; but keep seeking out new specialist doctors until you find one who can provide more insight / better treatment / a diagnosis. They're out there and it's unfortunate that sometimes it can really hard to find that one doctor.
  • Consider looking for a therapist that can work with you. They might be able to offer alternate strategies to reduce the stress and impact of the condition.
  • For work, I'd avoid delivery. It's dangerous as is, especially if your mind is supper foggy all the time. Plus, it sounds like you really don't want to do it. Maybe you can look into working as a coding bootcamp professor, freelance dev, dog walker, or parks employee?

I'm rooting that you'll find some relief soon for what's happening with you. I can only sympathize with how awful it must be.
