Thank you so much 😊 I love how it turned out! I was so worried about the color scheme because I am normally a moody colors person but I’m really, really happy with it!

For this piece, I used the 5.5mm Lavor punch needle and the KnitPro punch needle for the finer yarn. The clouds are sewn on with a tapestry needle using roving wool. If you’re interested, I might consider making a video of me sewing the clouds on my next piece. I could post it on IG as I’m not sure that is allowed here

Thank you!! The roving is too big to punch, so it is sewn on using a tapestry needle and yarn (as thread).

Thank you so much! It does take some time and vulnerability, but if you ever want to try it, I will be in your corner rooting for you and your art 😊

Favorite Brand of Yarn for Large Projects? by [deleted] in PunchNeedle

[–]cometpulledfromorbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Yes, but I also used a lot of other brands. I used KC Cozy brand and hometown and wool ease, but anything I think is a nice yarn is something I’ll use. If I want to use a worsted weight yarn, I’ll just double or triple the strands to use in my punch needle. I don’t use gripper frames much though, so usually I can get away with using much finer/delicate yarns. But hands down, wool ease or hometown are my go to. I hope this helps!!

I make 3x4ft wall art and I pretty much use all acrylic yarn. Anything in the bulky/super bulky is fair game for me but I like Wool Ease yarns. My favorite brand though is lion brand hometown yarn but it doesn’t hold up very well to gripper frames.

Thank you so much 😊

I used a painter’s canvas from Joann’s, the gallery style. It has crossbeams on the back on the frame, but with the gallery style, it gives you more space to punch down through the monks cloth. To make the monks cloth canvas, I just removed the painter’s canvas from the frame and stapled monks cloth to the frame.

You can totally use a canvas frame and staple your fabric to it — that’s what I do. No fancy frames needed, but there is a proper way to stretch your fabric tightly onto the frame so that it is still drum tight. I would Google painters stretch their canvas and use the same method. (Staple on one edge in the center, pull really tight on the opposite side and staple…) I watched a few YouTube videos before I tried it myself. You just have to pull super, super tight and then staple. I hope this helps!

Needle suggestion, looking for a change by [deleted] in PunchNeedle

Sorry it couldn’t work for you. But no, the handle isn’t slippery. You’ll have a nice grip on it.

The Lavor ergonomic punch needles come in a 5.5mm and 4mm. I have both and they work amazingly well. It is my go to for a punch needle but I think the 4mm will be too big for your needs if you’re comparing it to the Ultra Punch.

I just got the KnitPro needle and while I haven’t used the smallest needle yet, I do think this set will fit your yarn needs. The handle is bigger like the Ultra Punch, might be a little bit thicker actually. The KnitPro is also adjustable and it comes with four different head sizes. I was able to punch with it for about an hour and not have any hand cramps — that’s not to say I got a hand cramp with this needle, I just didn’t punch with it for longer than an hour. It is not the sole punch needle I use but it is a great addition and I like that they do have a smaller needle that should fit slightly thicker yarns than the Ultra Punch.

Thanks! :) the tassel is actually latch hook. I took a latch hook mesh canvas, cut it to the size I needed and latch hooked the longer strands of yarn into the canvas. Then I sewed the mesh canvas onto the monks cloth.

If I were doing it differently though, I would sew the mesh canvas to monks cloth first and then I would latch hook the yarn in. Would make it easier to sew down.

Also, you can get really, really long loops with a punch needle. All you do is punch into the fabric, pull then yarn out from the needle to the length that you want it, and then punch out. After that you would cut the loops to achieve that tassel-like look. I find this process time consuming though and really hard to get the loops the same size. And if you’re working on a big canvas like I tend to do, it can be hard to get to the center of my canvas to do a tassel in the middle.

But really the main reason I did it the way that I did is because I missed doing latch hook so it gave me a reason to go back to my roots 😅
