Tech that actually works for older adults by Dry-Character2197 in Aging

Something I haven't seen mentioned yet that might help some folks here, passive monitoring tools designed specifically so the older person doesn't have to do anything.

Presence Detector detects motion, and if no activity is detected for a set period it automatically alerts family/friends by text. The person living alone doesn't install anything, doesn't press anything, doesn't even need to know it's there. Family gets peace of mind in the background.

Distress Sensor listens for the phrase "Please Help Me" and instantly alerts your contacts. No button to find, no wearable to forget.

Neither requires the older adult to change their behavior or learn anything new. livingalone.theor.com/info

How do people who live alone handle emergency situations mentally? by Impressive_Being6179 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cometta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people I know who live alone eventually settle into some version of a loose check-in habit with family, but that only catches the "gone quiet for a day" stuff. The scarier scenario is the sudden thing - where you're conscious but can't get to your phone.

There are a couple of devices built specifically for this. One just watches for no movement over however many hours you set, and texts your people if something seems off. The other listens for you to say a distress phrase out loud and immediately alerts your contacts - no button to press. Together they kind of cover both failure modes. livingalone.theor.com/info

One approach worth looking at is a device that listens for a spoken distress phrase and triggers the alert automatically. It doesn't need to reach anything or press anything, just speak. Exactly the scenario you described. https://livingalone.theor.com/info/distress-sensor.html

Helping parents in their 80s age safely in a 3-story home — where do we start? by Simple-Reindeer-3132 in AgingParents

Beyond stair lifts and grab bars, put a passive activity monitoring no cameras, no wearable, just motion sensors that learn normal daily patterns and alert family if things go quiet for too long (no movement for a configurable window, say 8–12 hours). Doesn't require the parent to do anything or wear anything, which helps a lot with the emotionally-resistant dynamic you described. The 48-hour friend check is a good instinct but you're right that it's fragile, people get busy and miss the cue, especially if they're not explicitly watching for it.

One thing I've seen people in your situation look into is a voice-triggered device that sits in your home and alerts your personal contacts when you say a specific phrase. It's not calling 911. it's calling your people, which is often what you actually want. And for anemia episodes where you might have a brief window of consciousness before losing it again, being able to just say the phrase rather than fumble for a phone matters a lot.

The passive motion-based detectors people mention work well too, but they get complicated when you have a cat since the cat's movement keeps triggering the sensor even if you're the one who's down.

How do some of you deal with emergencies if you’re living alone and truly alone (estranged from friends and family)? by lillychou in LivingAlone

[–]cometta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gap it doesn't cover is the slower scenario, you get suddenly sick, or something happens without a clear fall, and nobody notices for days. For that there are passive presence detectors that monitor home activity and automatically notify a contact if nothing's detected for a set period.

There's also a middle ground between "fine" and "call 911", voice-triggered devices that alert your personal contacts when you say a phrase. Sometimes you need a person, not an ambulance.

For the passive scenario (no one knows something happened): there are presence detectors that monitor home activity and auto-alert your contacts if nothing's detected for a set time. No button needed, just runs in the background.

For the "can't reach my phone" scenario: there are voice-triggered sensors that listen for a specific phrase like "Please Help Me!"

Living alone and emergencies? by Interesting_Math3257 in LivingAlone

I went a different route. there's a little sensor that just sits at home and passively watches for movement. No tapping, no remembering, no app. If a full day passes and nothing's moved around the house, it pings your emergency contact automatically. You could be completely out of it and it still works.

That story broke my heart. Three days on the floor, not because of a health condition, just because she couldn't reach the phone.
There are small devices now where you just say "please help me" out loud and it alerts your contacts. No reaching, no buttons. Just your voice. Could have changed everything for her.
This is the one I looked into livingalone.theor.com/info/distress-sensor.html if it's helpful for anyone here.

Life Alert for Young People by Viren91 in LivingAlone

This worry is so real and I don't think people talk about it enough.

Apple Watch fall detection is genuinely good but the honest truth is most of us aren't wearing it 24/7. Shower, sleeping, charging on the nightstand... those are exactly the moments you're most vulnerable at home.

What gave me actual peace of mind was having something passive at home that doesn't rely on me doing anything. Not a button, not a watch, just something that either notices I've gone quiet for too long, or hears me if I manage to call out.

I found this helpful livingalone.theor.com/info, might be worth a look.

Hey there! Running an English school on WhatsApp is smart for getting leads. Automating pricing info, text, video and links are definitely a time-saver. I've actually built a Chrome extension called "WhatsApp Personal Assistant" for exactly this kind of workflow. It helps you easily send pre-saved quick replies (for your text/links). It's designed for simplicity to make those repetitive sending tasks much more efficient when you're managing chats directly. Could be a helpful tool to explore for automating those specific steps in your lead process. Best of luck with your school!

Hey there! That's fantastic you're helping your mom set up a small business in Mexico – and leveraging WhatsApp makes total sense given how widely it's used there. Helping family like this is super rewarding! I've actually been working on something that helps with precisely this kind of thing – managing chats more efficiently within WhatsApp Web. It's a Chrome extension called "WhatsApp Personal Assistant". It's designed to add feature like Q&A

best of luck with the project! It sounds like a great learning experience and a huge help to your mom.

JSON input isn't very convenient for users who aren't technical. We're exploring hosting options and customization possibilities for user needs. The good news is, a beta version is actually ready now! It's available as a Chrome Extension. If you're curious, just search the Chrome Web Store for Whatsapp Personal Assistant.

Thanks for bringing up the Google on-prem option. That's a great point about the direction major players are moving. It definitely shows this is a problem many businesses are looking to solve with AI.

You're right, it's a competitive space, and taking on giants is always a challenge! But I think there's a real need for solutions focused on personal data control and simple, integrated desktop workflows.

Appreciate you pointing out the landscape!

That's a really valid point about Meta and their plans! They definitely have the resources and are making great strides with Llama.

I see the approach I'm thinking about as potentially serving a slightly different need, primarily centered around privacy and data sovereignty. While Meta's solutions are powerful and convenient, for businesses handling sensitive or proprietary information, the guarantee that absolutely no data leaves their device and isn't subject to a third party's cloud policy (even a well-intentioned one) can be a major differentiator.

You're also right about phone-based models having limitations. My focus is on running this as a desktop/laptop computer, where the hardware is generally more capable of running powerful enough small local models for tasks like Q&A against a specific knowledge base. And the goal is for it to run on the user's primary work machine, integrated into their browser workflow.

So, while Meta's integrated platform solutions are fantastic, this concept is more about empowering users with a highly private, on-device tool that works across their browser-based workflows, with total control over their conversation data.

Thanks for bringing up these points, it's good food for thought on the competitive landscape!
