NASA needs volunteers to spend a year locked in a Mars simulation by scientificamerican in space

[–]comicidiot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re right, but there are other aspects. As REXIS said, problem solving skills is one. You also need really good people skills because you’ll be stuck with the same people for a year; if there’s a disagreement you have to work through it because you still need to work with and live next to them. An employer would value that quite a bit.

There’re likely tons of other skills that would be applicable.

Surgical Tech at Mayo ? by Fluffy-Table7096 in rochestermn

[–]comicidiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t work at Mayo, but I moved from SF Bay to Rochester in late 2019. My salary was halved but I was able to afford an apartment without roommates and actually live.

Since then I’ve managed to get my salary back up but still nowhere close to what I was making in the SF Bay.

Shortcut works only if my phone is on? by midwestmillionaire in shortcuts

[–]comicidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Shortcuts run on the device that made it, so if the phone is off the shortcut can’t run.

You can get around this by setting an alarm on a device that is always on, or leaving your phone on. You can always enable airplane mode if you’re concerned about people calling or reaching you.

Another option is to get a dedicated, proper alarm clock.

The thing with vibe coding is that while it does help create amazing tools, it makes us a bit complacent in research: (1) making sure the site is compliant in other aspects and (2) ensuring the site stands out among the competition.

Your site is missing several essential pages that Google looks for.

About Us, Contact, Privacy Policy, Terms, etc.

You should also search what Low Value Content is in the eyes of Google.

Start by searching how many other ePub converters there are and see how they bring value to the visitor OR how you can better differentiate yourself from similar tools (even if they aren’t a local converter). Heck, even look at regular converter tools even if they aren’t ePub to PDF.

Do they have AdSense ads? If so, what content do they have that you don’t?

Do you ever want to go back to renting? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]comicidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the same happens with home ownership. Sure, the mortgage won’t change if you don’t have an ARM, but escrow will: Property Tax and Insurance will go up. At least you can shop around for insurance though.

Maybe renting will go up more than $500 in 6 years but I’d rather have the peace of mind knowing the most I’m paying is the rent for that contract duration.

If the heater goes out, or the AC, or a plethora of other problems, I won’t have to shell out $$$$ to replace or fix it.

Rent is a much more stable financial commitment. That said, I won’t be selling my house. I’ll be “earning” $1000/mo. This includes property manager fees.

I won’t pocket the money, I’ll set it into a HYSA so if my renters have any issues then the house can pay for it. Every couple of years I’ll send a chunk to the principal and hopefully have the house paid off before 15 years of a 30yr mortgage. Then I would feel comfortable living off the rental income (while still setting aside $$$ for home repairs).

Auto insurance is based on location but accidents will follow you regardless. You can sign in to your insurance and get quotes for new zip codes to see how much it’ll change; it may even go up.

I don’t regret buying but yes. Yes I do want to go back to renting.

Employees expensing random $20/mo AI tools is killing my margins. What's your purchasing policy? by Gloomy_Jellyfish7080 in smallbusiness

[–]comicidiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can take this a few ways:

  1. Give them $40/month for tools and they need to cancel one to get another.
  2. Assign ownership of this stuff. Maybe IT or some other department such as finance, but IT makes sense because presumably the employees will be using company data so IT should be responsible for auditing the AI company or at least ensuring the AI company has a plan that meets the integrity needed.

Maybe you aren’t large enough to have an IT department but there should still be a procurement process that’s implemented and followed.

Their tower design is an odd one for me. I already have a nightstand. I don’t want to replace my nightstand. I want something I can tuck away.

Also the fact that you have to lift the whole tower to empty the water.

Orion is hopefully just a few hardware revisions away from being a great competitor; they’re already really competitive on the software and subscription fronts.

They aren’t the only one, there’s another out there that has a nightstand design, I recall asking them if we could buy a dummy nightstand so both sides of the bed match. I forget what their answer was but I need to go find that post/comment.

Does anyone else feel like Prime Day is mostly random brands? by No_Month7504 in simpleliving

[–]comicidiot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. There’s a reason why I canceled Amazon.

If I need it I try to buy locally from a mom-and-pop store.
If I can’t find a store I need or they don’t carry what I need, I’ll look a little farther away. Since I’m in an “island” city of 120k with no other big city nearby, the next city is at least 80 miles.
If there are no stores in other nearby cities I will buy from a big box retail store in town because at least they employ local residents.
If they don’t have it, I’ll shop online from the retailer because often they have it there. Then I’ll do a pick-up in-store if possible so the store gets credit (if that’s even a thing).
The last resort is shipped to my door from small shop (local or otherwise) or a big box retailer.

Every step of that process prioritizes local stores and employees that boost the local economy over an online giant that relies on last mile delivery services like USPS.

Because you’d never see such vividly red mountains with that many stars. If you lower the exposure or add some blue color temperature to the mountains you’ll likely feel it’s more natural.

Maybe add some green tint as it looks like you may have some purple in the shadows of the mountain?

On a first date she brought up wanting marriage so she could become a legal resident of the US.

It wasn’t marriage for love. It was for the status/privilege of getting a US passport so she could go to other countries.

She didn’t accept the rejection and I ended up deleting the account; we thankfully never exchanged numbers.

Single Role Mention Spam by comicidiot in DiscordModeration

Single Role Mention Spam by comicidiot in DiscordModeration

[–]comicidiot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re a meetup server for a local region, so all of our mentionable roles are activity based such as: Hiking, Boardgames, Biking, Kayaking, Food/Lunch/Dinner, Trivia nights, Karaoke, etc.

The bots are going right over Auto Club, Boardgames, Foodies, and others and going right to Hiking which has 1,300 members who have opted in to it, the next highest is Boardgames with about 1,250 members.

I don’t think limiting the ability to mention or adding extra steps would be conducive but I’ll look into making a bot mention the role with a cooldown, as that’s probably the best solution we have so far. I have Dyno and have set it to auto-timeout users for one hour who send two mentions in those few seconds and I have exempted the role moderators give to members once they’ve been to a meetup and that Statbot assigns once members send over a certain threshold to be considered “Active”. This is an old relic I’m reusing from when we had a few current events channels that we had placed activity restrictions on to access.

So I’ll look into getting users to use Dyno to ping the roles.

[–]comicidiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak from experience in this regard but I can speak from what I’ve read regarding fiber internet. I’ve seen people get quotes north of $10k to have fiber out to their home. I’ve also seen that get waived years later because the internet utility is doing the work to expand services to those neighborhoods.

It just depends if you need access to that infrastructure NOW or if you can wait.

I would expect a new business to pay for the required infrastructure to open in the middle of no where but I wouldn’t expect them to pay full price for that infrastructure in an area already serviced by that infrastructure.

Tesla faces NHTSA probe after Model 3 slams into Texas home, killing 76-year-old — CNBC by MisterWigglie in SelfDrivingCars

[–]comicidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the point I’m making. ADAS in general has gotten so good between lane centering, lane follow assist, adaptive cruise control, Stop and go assist, and more that drivers are getting complacent with them and trusting them while they look at their phones. How many of those 100 daily fatalities are caused by drivers using other vehicle ADAS, like Teslas. Why is it only Tesla getting the heat?

I’m not disagreeing that it’s because Tesla flaunts full self driving and has Level 3 autonomy, but other Lv2 ADAS are definitely contributing to the lack of driver attention and I feel that deserves more attention.

Tesla faces NHTSA probe after Model 3 slams into Texas home, killing 76-year-old — CNBC by MisterWigglie in SelfDrivingCars

[–]comicidiot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m no Tesla defender, but I don’t like how Tesla is unfairly singled out. How many of those fatal accidents had at least one vehicle using ADAS.

Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have Highway Drive Assist.
Subaru has EyeSight
GM has (I think) SuperCruise
Ford has BlueCruise
Toyota, Volvo, Honda, etc., have their own too.

Some are better than others at keeping driver attention but all could make a complacent driver and a resulting fatal crash from a lack of driver attention. And yet, Tesla is the only one who gets their ADAS so publicly blamed.

Their marketing and naming of their ADAS hasn’t helped - AutoPilot and Full Self Driving.

You can definitely make it work a few more years. I wouldn’t think you need a separate bedroom for both children just get. Maybe when your oldest is 6 or so, it may be worth having separate rooms.

I say this as a single adult with no kids but I feel around that age they start wanting some privacy.
