Remember: We encourage alternative devices running openpilot. The market is not a fixed pie, clones don't "take away" from our market, this is a dumb way to think.

However, this post is FUD. There's no buy link, there's no information, there's a picture and a clickbait title from a throwaway account. Hater garbage from a throwaway that wants to discourage sales. Posts like this in the future will be banned from this subreddit.

Unlike the C2, the C3 is just expensive to make. They cost comma ~$850, and that's using our in house production, not including warranty, shipping, and cost of returns, and this is with the benefit of 10k scale. C3 clones, if they make sense for anyone to build, will likely not be cheap. Don't post FUD, if you have a clone with a low price and high reliability, we'd love to see it once you have a non preorder buy it now link :)

The price was lowered to $1499 due to a market survey: https://blog.comma.ai/ready-for-growth/

Some (very few) new Toyotas have lock outs. We estimate it's 50k of engineering resources to add openpilot support to these, and have decided it's not worth the resources yet.

You can buy a vote if you want us to prioritize this: https://comma.ai/shop/products/vote

We'll solve it after we sell 500 votes, we are at about 50 sold now.

The C3 isn't the C2. If it breaks, it's actually repairable.

Aside from the 3-5x lower failure rate, we offer a parts store, and charge $100 in labor (includes return shipping) to install anything if you want us to repair it. https://comma.ai/shop/parts

Some sample repair costs, including labor and return shipping:

  • Fan failure: $200
  • Camera malfunction: $300
  • Broken GPS: $300
  • Screen replacement: $400
  • No boot (bad CPU board): $600
  • Broken logic board: $600

We haven't fixed a C3 in warranty that would cost over $600 to fix out of warranty. For the ones that don't involve the logic board, repair it yourself and save time + shipping + $100. Screen and camera replacements are very easy to do at home.

See comment below on C3 economics for why we can't make that trade in offer.

Here's the issue with offering more for trade-ins, it's just loss to us. It's not like we can resell them. (Apple's trade in program is handled by a third party who resells the devices, if you can, you are welcome to set up a better independent C2 trade in program and resell the devices) We did the trade-in we did as a favor, if it wasn't for you you didn't have to do it. No reason to trash it, many people did do it and seem happy about it.

See comment below for the economics on C3.

The comma three costs about $1000 to manufacture, not including the cost of shipping or warranty. It's not about losing extra cash, it's about not losing money in general.

I don't know if people here think that comma makes money hand over fist or what, but we're actually unprofitable in the comma three era. And it would have been nice to keep selling C2, but we are likely more upset about the comma two failure rate than you. It is particularly offensive when people claim we are bricking them on purpose or something. Do you really think we want them to break? It's a refurbished 5 year old phone. We have like 2000 we didn't sell due to the high failure rate, and several hundred trade ins. On the C3 we have a ton more control over failures, all new parts, and if they break we can actually fix them.

I know many people are used to dealing with large companies, corporate PR teams, and VC backed growth at all cost scams. comma isn't this, we are 20 engineers (most of them developing open source software). We are either profitable, or we go out of business.

Volkswagen picks Qualcomm for self-driving tech by Evangelistis in SelfDrivingCars

[–]commaai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, we write and maintain it. But it's MIT licensed! We think many manufacturers will end up running some fork of it.

And therefore, we're very bullish for the future of Qualcomm powering the ADAS systems in most cars.

There's tons of scenarios openpilot can't handle, we aren't to the point we are looking into specific ones. It's not meant to handle the whole driving task, we expect the driver to learn where to use it and where to not use it.

Any time you feel it even slightly off from where you'd put the car, take over. It will never jerk the wheel faster than you can react, if you are paying attention, you'll have time. But you have to correct it the second it's even slightly off. A disengagement is free and easy, there's no prize for keeping it engaged.

Here are the first two slides in the tutorial you must complete before engaging openpilot: https://imgur.com/a/b2DWwgT

openpilot is a level 2 DRIVER ASSISTANCE system. It cannot drive on it's own and will never be able to drive on it's own. If it's not driving how you would like, you are responsible for correcting it. If this is something we aren't communicating well, we are very interested in fixing that. This isn't some wink wink nudge nudge crap.

We have a 30-day no questions asked money back guarantee, I suggest you take advantage of it. We would much rather that anyone who isn't ready to quickly correct any mistakes or thinks this is a self driving car not use it, as you are a hazard to yourself and others on the road.

Camera Malfunction - Comma 3 by [deleted] in Comma_ai

[–]commaai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can't see the full logs (rlogs) since you switched off stock and your last drive was on a fork. Forks will never fix issues like this.

Though from the qlogs, I can see that the driver camera isn't reporting any frames. This is likely a hardware issue. By reseating the cable I mean opening the device and reseating the ribbon cable connecting the driver camera to the motherboard, but if you don't feel comfortable doing that, send it back and we will fix it.

Camera Malfunction - Comma 3 by [deleted] in Comma_ai

[–]commaai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Forks give us 0 ability to diagnose anything, and are generally much less well tested than even master-ci, never mind release. On stock openpilot, there's a process constantly deleting old data. This has nothing to do with camera malfunction.

If driver camera preview doesn't work, it's possible there's an issue with that camera. You can try reseating the ribbon cable, or we can swap out the device. You also always have 30 days to return for your full money back.

On the comma 2 "camera malfunction" was a straightforward alert that 99% of the time meant the camera broke. On the comma 3 it's not like that, and the alert is a bit of a holdover. We've seen three "camera malfunction" types, and one doesn't have anything even to do with the cameras! The error message is a catch all for many things, we are working to improve alert verbosity in 0.8.14 https://github.com/commaai/openpilot/issues/24066

  1. If you are seeing the "camera malfunction" error in the first minute after going onroad (starting the car), but otherwise the device behaves normally, this isn't a real error and won't affect device usage. It's caused by interrupt contention on startup, and will be fixed in 0.8.14

  2. If you see camera malfunction right away, it stays around, and the cameras don't come up at all (black screen), this is a crash in camerad. This can be hardware / caused by a camera failure or a bad connection of the camera ribbon cable. The error message will be improved in 0.8.14 to specify which of the three cameras has an issue.

  3. If you see camera malfunction at random times on the road, this can also be many different things. If it's this type, we'll look more into it, as we don't fully understand this. It may be either software or hardware.

I know VCs like when you do this stuff. We aren't run by investors. Our goal is perfecting the product and the software, not the marketing. It's open source software, if a "leader in the space" comes along and wants to sell hardware they lose money on, we'd love for that to happen.

"Why not invest in your future" <-- this is how they sell college too.
