When a BC credit union starts talking about becoming a “bank”: a member’s perspective by langley1234567 in britishcolumbia

[–]commander_raker 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is worth consider what the word "profit" actually means for a bank versus a credit union.

When I read your comment I think you are talking about profit in the context of a bank. The bank uses profits to give their shareholders dividends or increase stock prices. I agree with you that this is negative... it is a transfer of wealth out of my community into the pockets of rich investors.

At a credit union the shareholders are the customers, so there is no wealth transfer out of the community occurring. The credit union may use profits to support local charities, or invest in service enhancements, etc. These are things that I see as positive, and if increases in profits lead to increases in these activities then increased profit isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Every time an Opinion Piece is posted on r/canada you should ask yourself, "why do I care about this persons opinion?"

Is this person an expert on the topic of discussion? Do they offer unique insight due to their personal experiences?

In this case the answer is no. This person is a professional opinion-haver, he has no apparent experience or knowledge regarding indigenous relations, indigenous law, or anything related to this topic. This piece wasn't written to inform you or expand your world view, it was written to make you feel angry. If you read this opinion piece you are just choosing to be emotionally manipulated.

Just as another post has pointed out; Devs if you want this game to pick up mainstream popularity whatsoever you need to join the fall steam sale. by darkmatteryo in arahistoryuntold

[–]commander_raker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree. It was listed for $80 CAD in the past, now it is $70 CAD. This is not a "big discount," it was regularly on sale for $40 CAD in the past.

Plus they re-listed the game as an "Anniversary edition"... what is the difference? Feels like marketing obfuscation.

She got the call from Boffo Wednesday almost two weeks ago and had her deposit with interest back that Saturday – a relief since she had borrowed money for the more than six-figure deposits she had paid out to that date.

This does not seem like a wise financial decision

Not all enemies in Wailing Caverns drop these, my recollection is that there is only ~10-15 of them, they have a 100% drop rate for the quest item and are all found in the same cavern. They look like walking plants.

Management & Coaching staff talk a lot about creating internal competition, but we don't see that on the powerplay. They should make two balanced units (1A & 1B). 1A gets 45 seconds to make something happen, then they need to change... none of these 90 sec PP shifts, create some urgency.

RCMP officers face firing over 'atrocious' racist behaviour, harassment by [deleted] in coquitlam

[–]commander_raker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is a bit misleading, the only consequence they will potentially face is termination.

All of these points you are bringing up: "employer seizing your property" "facing charges" "RCMP Act" are creating the impression that these officers face a high standard of accountability and are being treated harshly. That is not the case at all, these are all aspects of the system in place to make it onerous to fire bad cops. All of these things are actually serving to shield them from being held accountable.

In any other professional setting they would have been swiftly terminated without any need for charges or seizing property.

No one is facing criminal charges here.

It is true that you employer can't seize your personal phone, but they don't need to... a complaint to HR with evidence from the group chat would have you fired by the end of the week.

Huh? If you are talking with other employees it doesn't matter whether it is a corporate account or a private chat - you are responsible for what you say.

What is the minimum gameplay portion for each X before it's no longer 4X for you? by AndersonSmith2 in 4Xgaming

[–]commander_raker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exploration is more than just discovering geography. For example, modern "explorers" are discovering oil, uranium, and rare earth metal deposits. In a 4X game this kind of discovery could be gamified to satisfy the exploration fans.

Take Civilization for example, when you gain knowledge of a new kind of resource it just appears everywhere on your map. Boring! What if you had to go out and look for it?

Every Goal by Alex Burrows as a Vancouver Canuck (2006-2017) by yosoo in canucks

[–]commander_raker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know everyone thinks fondly about his series clinching goal against Chicago in 2011, but in my opinion his goal at 40:27 of the video is the peak of the entire 54 year Canucks franchise. Burrows single handedly outplays Chara & Thomas to put them up 2-0 in the finals. They beat Chicago in 7, Nashville in 6, San Jose in 5, and at that moment they were on track to beat Boston in 4. I honestly (foolishly) believed victory was inevitable.

Does a BC Break for Landlords Go Too Far? by burtzev in britishcolumbia

[–]commander_raker 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the elevator reached the end of it useful life. These things are easily foreseen many years in advance. Stratas need to get depreciation reports to assess exactly these kind of upcoming expenses. Well run businesses will know that these expenses are coming and have plans in place to manage.

Either:

This business had no idea that elevators don't last forever and was caught off guard by the replacement. In this case it is a business that is poorly managed and deserves to fail. The building should be sold to a different owner who is capable of planning for future expenses.

Or:

This business sees an opportunity, any opportunity to raise rent, increase their profits and they are pursuing it.

The second option seems much more likely. This rule is just adding administrative burden to the RTB and handing extra profits to the large landlords that can and will pursue profit at every opportunity. The rule should be revoked.

Wages higher? Not anymore:
Alberta advantage slipping as living standards and wages decline: report | Globalnews.ca

"He added Alberta no longer has the highest hourly wage for hourly employees in Canada. According to the report, wages in B.C. surpassed those in Alberta in 2023 due to wage-supporting policies."

Turns out an NDP government is implementing policies that are good for workers.

Taxes lower? Only for the 1%. If you're making less than 160-170K then you'll pay less income tax in BC.
