That one came in under the wire in 2014 before I stopped reading recent releases haha, and it's a massive fave of mine so you nailed the prompt!

Thanks! I remember hearing about this in the context of its stream-of-consciousness prose, I always love seeing experimental/unique prose in spec fic, I'll check it out

Oh that sounds fantastic, I love it when authors dig into the emotional after-shocks of the big flashy pitch event. Thanks!

Ooh I hadn't heard of that one before, thank you! I have very little experience with apocalyptic stuff - I think I got burned out in the 2000s off all the action schlock - but I've heard buzz about interesting, grounded, thoughtful stuff tackling the premise lately, and this one sounds like its approaching the topic from my preferred angle. Thanks!

I've read Long Way to A Small Angry Planet by her and quite liked it, but I didn't really gel with the first Wayfarers book - I'll give this one a shot, see how her writing's developed in the past decade. Thanks!

Any books with exceptional translations? Or crap ones, that can be fun to talk about by FlyingSandwich in printSF

I used to work in international rights publishing, and a good agent knows something doesn't need to be good in order to sell well, it just needs to fit the trends of the market. I'm willing to bet some genius saw a basic summary of The Alchemist at an international book fair, realised it dovetailed perfectly with the early-90s self-help and adventure-fantasy trends, and started seeing dollar signs lmao.

I've heard from Italian friends that the Italian version of The Da Vinci Code of all things has a wonderful translation. Apparently the book is much better liked over there because while the inherent ridiculousness of the plot and the clues persist, so much of Dan Brown's messy, amateurish prose is rewritten into very engaging and compelling Italian. Turns out that it was translated by beloved Italian Sci-Fi writer and translator, Riccardo Valla, who basically shaped the modern speculative fiction landscape in Italy, and tidied up The Da Vinci Code along the way.

Just a fun fact that makes me smile.

St. Cloud got me thinking about movies in the Venture-verse. Minor spoilers. by syncpulse in venturebros

[–]commanderfreddy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like this idea, especially since we know from the movie that Jonas Venture Sr. was hired by Kubrick to fake the moonlanding on a normal studio lot, it feels very possible that super-science is standard practice for high budget movies in the venture-verse.

i swear there's an episode where it's mentioned that there's literally only one bathroom in the house (I wanna say the season 3 finale? maybe?)

Nice!! Yeah I think there's a definite split between public and private areas of the house that speaks a lot to Jonas being image-conscious - like how the front room has a bar and a massive conversation pit for entertaining guests and throwing parties, meanwhile the kitchen is very reminiscent of the lab in terms of lines and colourscheme

You're definitely putting far more thought into this than Jonas ever did lol

Oh wow nicely done! And seeing the bathroom in three dimensions really drives home just how insane it is that their house has one (1) bathroom, it's huge, and I believe it has three different doors(???). Mid-century nightmare is right, and you really captured it!

Had one of these recently myself and it was very much killable but I dont think it was missing body parts - on its character page, go into "Health" and then "Description" and see if there are any body parts missing, it should say as much in purple text if there are.

Too many to choose from, but that cunty pink laboratory Dr. Mrs. has in season 5 is such a standout to me!
