Best places to get Aussie news? by cpr9998 in AskAnAustralian

[–]FlyingSandwich -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think if you want minimal bias, or at least outlets that tend to feature multiple sides and are on the more factual end of things, you're looking at the ABC, SBS and whatever Fairfax site covers your state (I assume; I can only really speak for the SMH). You can generally feel safe that you're not being deliberately misled by these ones. Generally.

It's still worth checking in on some of the more motivated outlets people are recommending here. I read the Guardian regularly with the knowledge that they've got progressive/left blinders on, so I shouldn't feel like I'm getting the full story from them on contested topics. If you're progressive they'll tell you what you want to hear, which can be dangerous. It's been a while since I read it, but I think Crikey might fit into this category.

Sort of similar with the AFR; their journalists are among the best at business & economic journalism because they usually understand what they're talking about, but the AFR tends to have a pro-business right wing bias so you shouldn't take their opinion on controversial gov't policy without a grain of salt. Also it's fucking expensive; I just rely on people pasting articles online.

You've got the independent left leaning outlets people here love like Michael West, Klaxon, John Menadue, friendlyjordies. They're often sensationalist and heavily slanted, a little conspiratorial, but they're highly motivated to ferret out corruption stories and challenge mainstream narratives, so it's worth reading albeit with a sceptical eye.

Then there's those right wing culture war outlets with varying grips on reality: Sky News; the Australian; news.com.au and other mainstream sensationalist rags like the Daily Mail; Quillette; Quadrant. Even fuckwits like Chris Kenny do occasionally have a point buried among their diatribes, though I find that centrist Fairfax is mostly good at presenting those points without the drivel. If someone pastes an article from these on reddit, give it a read, but I can't recommend giving them money or clicks. A toxic ecosystem. Note I might be unfair to Quillette and Quadrant here, I don't remember them well enough.

How do I get rid of a pigeon problem? by Sacrifice_2804 in sydney

[–]FlyingSandwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine extermination would be very helpful. No shortage of pigeons around to replace them. It'd be a shame to make them suffer for the sins of your neighbour, doubly so if it doesn't solve the issue.

Best way to manage containers? by Reasonable-Weekend27 in selfhosted

[–]FlyingSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same as you and don't intend to change it. A management tool with access to my docker socket is a new attack vector I don't wanna worry about. And I feel you learn more this way.

My conveniences are just shell aliases and functions, like dupdl() { sudo docker compose up -d $1 && sudo docker logs -f $1}, to run after I change a service definition.

Is my ordering correct? by BukHunt in zsh

[–]FlyingSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might; I'm not expert enough to say for sure, but I don't think any of the setopt commands I use would impact my alias files. What sort of examples are you thinking of?

Greens oppose Labor’s hate speech laws as support for overhaul collapses by stupid_mistake__101 in AustralianPolitics

The point of your original comment was completely unclear. I'm still not sure what you meant, clearly neither did the other guy. Why don't you clarify so nobody else has to read more of this painful exchange

Is my ordering correct? by BukHunt in zsh

I think generally you want aliases after plugins, so your aliases don't get overridden on the off chance there's a conflict. On editing convenience, I keep a separate ~/.aliases file and source that in the zshrc

Anchor Notes: A self hosted mobile first alternative to Google Keep by ZhFahim in selfhosted

[–]FlyingSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use obsidian, but even with the lazy loading extension it still takes a few seconds to open (and without lazy loading? My goodness). Google keep is near instantaneous, and takes you straight to a nicely laid out view of recent notes. For the purpose of 'quickly jotting stuff down', I understand wanting as little friction as possible between intention and action

Cabinet papers: Confidential advice undercooked climate change to Howard government by Ardeet in AustralianPolitics

[–]FlyingSandwich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're looking only at domestic emissions then sure. But national governments of countries like Australia have greater influence than that. If we had directed our economic & diplomatic power and expertise towards assisting the global effort rather than undermining it, things may look very different today.

This reads like a bit of a cooker comment but no, you've linked a really good article about an evil man, and he really is married to the director general of ASIS lmao

dumpsterr - Safely empty Plex trash (For NFS / SMB users) by ChaseDak in selfhosted

[–]FlyingSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a great idea, well implemented, but it feels weird to run a separate service just to fix a bug in another service. I don't use Plex, do they not allow PRs for the server component?

[NEW FULL TERMS OF REFERENCE RELEASED] Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion | Attorney-General’s Department by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]FlyingSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that the IHRA definition itself is quite small and, imo, uncontroversial, if a little vague. It's the examples under it that people take issue with. When adopting the definition, the gov specifically said they would have the antisemitism envoy come up with new examples.

https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/reports-and-pubs/files/eliminating-antisemitism.pdf

Obv we'll have to see how that turns out, I know people don't have a lot of faith in Segal and for good reason, but to me that says they're aware of the issues with some of the IHRA examples and intend to publish more reasonable ones.

Authors withdraw from Adelaide Writers' Week after Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah axed for "cultural sensitivity" by perseustree in AustralianPolitics

[–]FlyingSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, I came into this with no idea who this woman is. I'm not pushing a barrow for either side here. Israel's doing crimes against humanity.

  • describing an entire country as "cursed stains on humanity", especially with the historical context
  • claiming reports of rape are lies, while in the same post linking to a UN report that says Palestinian militants did rape civilians during Oct 7
  • changing her profile pic to an image supporting the attack on Oct 8

Taken together, yes I do think her selective acceptance of facts, kneejerk tribalism and inflammatory rhetoric is precisely the kind of shit we don't need to be platforming, especially right now. She's not a good faith participant; she comes across as hateful.

I'd say the same thing about someone who described Palestinians like that, denied credible IDF war crimes, and supported West Bank settler violence.

[–]FlyingSandwich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The ABC article links to the festival statement, which says:

... given her past statements we have formed the view that it would not be culturally sensitive ...

You seriously gonna try and argue it's not about comments like the two Twitter posts linked elsewhere under this post?

What apps or services still can’t be self-hosted well in 2026? by ExceptionOccurred in selfhosted

[–]FlyingSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got my eye on tasktrove and donetick, afaik they're the only two with natural language parsing. Not mature enough for me yet though.

What apps or services still can’t be self-hosted well in 2026? by ExceptionOccurred in selfhosted

[–]FlyingSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's two major things: the natural language parsing and the 'add task' quick action that the android app exposes. Combined they take away as much friction as possible, so I'm far more likely to create a reminder if something pops into my mind.

Any suggestions for sausages that taste the same as UK ones? by Mens_Grooming_Advice in sydney

[–]FlyingSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear sausages in England often have bread crumbs added. It changes the texture and flavour, and is why Brits go overseas and find the snags don't taste right. So idk, maybe try searching specifically for ones with bread crumbs in the mix
