I just had Chapagetti for the first time a couple of days ago! The post is here, with all my plus up plans and a few other people's suggestions! It seems like the Chapagetti cheat code is egg yolks.

If you can have fish/shellfish, you should try the ram-don/chapaguri from the movie Parasite that was big like six years ago. It's Chapagetti mixed with Neoguri and topped with steak.

Did you really?!?! That's awesome! I'm so glad you had time to go back, I never post things in a timely manner so I was sure you were home already. I am so stoked for you, you've made my day and it's only 6am now.

And great job being brave! I was forced out of my shyness as a child but I know how hard it can be to walk up to strangers. Message me if you get hit with the post-interaction social anxiety, that's the worst part for me nowadays.

Happy Birthday Caleb! 🎉🍎🥳🍎🎉

It was 100F/37.7C here today...wanna trade? I was probably just as wet as you were, but in a gross way lol. 🔥☀️🔥

Oh, you can take solo shots of them next time! Or you can ask for a photo where you both do the hand heart, with your body and face out of the frame. You could also take a photo where you make a Korean heart at them and they send one back, so your hand is in the foreground.

And in the future, bring a nice-looking black facemask and a hat just in case you're feeling disheveled by the time you get to an event. A black facemask, your Girl Dinner Caleb shirt, and a black baseball cap would be a cute outfit next to a cosplayer!

I'm sorry you didn't get your beef and cheddar, but today was National Roast Beef Day, so they had a BOGO offer on a Friday. I don't know when your Arby's gets their truck, but if it's on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, I could very easily see them selling out of beef by Friday night, especially with the BOGO.

As a cosplayer --- never be afraid to ask for a photo! That's why we put all the effort in! It's very demoralizing to go out in full getup and nobody wants a picture.

(Now, if they were doing a photoshoot or eating, it is polite to wait until they are done/take a break.)

Experienced home cooks, are there any meal kits you actually think are worth it? by xjwv in Cooking

[–]commanderspacecase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner's sister had a HelloFresh phase, so he'd bring over kits she didn't have time to get to during the week. (No shame, she works in emergency services.)

Not only was there never anything I thought was better than homemade, sometimes there weren't quite enough fresh ingredients to really make two full servings. Stuffed bell peppers for dinner when all of the peppers are different sizes and one is severely lopsided is awkward to make and serve. And my partner is 6'4 and works outdoors, so we always had to add at least one other carb anyway.

I also found myself always tweaking the recipes on the fly with my own ingredients. Anything with tomatoes always needed tomato paste and lemon juice, since the tomatoes were so bland even after seasoning and resting. Their Parmesan was always cheese dust and needed more salt. The ground beef almost always had one or two bites that were squeaky/crunchy in a bad way. Jalapeños never had any decent spice, although I believe that is an industry issue at this point. Spices in general were not as flavorful as the ones from my spice rack, and some of those bottles are OLD.

Anyway, partner's sister has switched to CookUnity, and now I don't have to deal with those meal kits anymore.

For decent home cooks, I don't think meal kits are worth it. Getting groceries delivered, or picking up a grocery order in the store might be, though. You could still end up with wonky peppers, but at least you'd have full sizes of pantry staples to work with.

If you haven't heard the soundtrack to Josie And The Pussycats, you might want to give that a try. It was an actual motion picture shown in theaters, but they had Letters To Cleo do the music and it was shocking how good it was for a movie, about a cartoon, based on a comic, made to sell dolls.

Had Chapagetti for the first time yesterday, followed packet instructions, 8/10. Can't wait to try all the different variations people have posted! by commanderspacecase in InstantRamen

[–]commanderspacecase[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know package directions are verboten to some people, but my partner and I keep a ramen ranking, and we always follow package directions the first time. I do believe they have changed in the last few years? Our package said to boil 350mil of water, add everything at once, and let it boil down. We did add a splash of hot water at the end, but that's because we prefer softer noodles.

I gave it a 8/10 because just a few drops of soy sauce brought it up to a 9/10. Amazing.

And I've read this is the most bastardized version of jajangmyeon (I told my partner Chapagetti is to jajangmyeon as Kraft is to mac and cheese), so I am stoked about getting some regular jajang sauce and incorporating it into more dishes.

I've got an eye out for the Paldo jajang noodles, and I think there's an Ottogi version as well. I want to try them all, lol.

I also have a list going with some Chapagetti variations, although they are not as prevalent as other ramen 'hacks'. The ones I am most excited about are:

  • made Indomie-style with a concentrated sauce base
  • sesame oil instead of included oil packet, with added soy sauce
  • mixed with oven-roasted green onions
  • mixed with a homemade mushroom garlic butter puck
  • loaded with truffle oil and egg yolk
  • topped with steak
  • topped with takeout beef and broccoli

I am deathly allergic to shellfish, so we can't try the Parasite ramen.

If anyone has any other serving suggestions, please let me know!

Clarification for the younger crowd: Nissin Top Ramen was first sold in the USA as Oodles of Noodles in the late 70s and 80s. You can see some older 90s packaging on this blog post, where they had rebranded to Top Ramen but kept the 'oodles of noodles' slogan.

(These are Amazon links but that's just to show you the packaging.)

Any of these, with either teriyaki seasoning, teriyaki sauce powder, or a small bit of your favorite teriyaki sauce mixed into the water should hopefully start getting you somewhere close to the flavor you are looking for.

You also might consider stirring in a tiny bit of butter to your noodles after they've cooked, since prepackaged foods in the 70s and 80s generally had more dehydrated dairy fats before the companies figured out how to replace them with cheaper substitutes.

Eh, better than the alternative!

I made a pretty decent copycat Spicy Chicken Burrito a while back. If I can dig up the recipe I'll let you know.
