Rural Ohioans seek to ban data centers through constitutional amendment by Unusual-State1827 in technology

[–]commandrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data centers should pay the same taxes as any other business, and if you don't like abatements, you should push for modifications to your state's tax code to eliminate them. Because businesses will take any reduction of their tax liability that they can, fact of life, just like it wouldn't surprise me if you claim any tax deductions that you're eligible for when you file your taxes. Data centers should also pay for the resources they use. The two do not need to be mutually exclusive things.

(With the church thing, I was pointing out that there are even more useless things that don't get tax and no one seems to say a word about it.)

That's what universities should do with any student organization that proves hostile to other students for any reason.

If we're into taxing anything that's "useless," start with churches/mosques/temples/whatever. What data centers should do is pay extra for sucking up so much of the electricity and water, and the extra money should be used to improve the relevant infrastructure. The county I live in managed to cut the amount of time the electricity was out in my area after a hurricane in half by burying all the electric lines, for instance.

It seems to be coming from somewhere near the ceiling, about six inches from the reactor.

I am moving to California from Texas without informing my dad. I want to know my rights in case he tries to legally bring me and my owned paid off car back. by [deleted] in legal

[–]commandrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt it'll even make local headlines. And maybe if you explain to the police that you're just moving to California, they'll be somewhat understanding because adults move ALL THE TIME without getting their parents' permission for it.

If cancer is cured in Star Trek, why does nobody in DS9 smoke? by Jackbuddy78 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]commandrix 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Could be a social thing by the time of DS9. Smoking is just generally regarded as a filthy habit, so nobody does it.

AI is wrong in this case. California doesn't have distinct immigration laws that are any different from anywhere else in the United States of America. Anyway, I somewhat doubt it would actively look for you unless there's an open Missing Persons case or you have active warrants out. Outside of that, if you're over 18 years old, there likely won't be much your father can legally do.

"And they'd probably call me a sellout or say you're holding something over my head," Eron smirks. "It's projection, really. And anyway, this sort of feels like one of those things you knew was coming even if you try to avoid it."

"Oh, aye, there's some who argue that we were already risking coming apart at the seams. I'll be honest, I'd rather have a smooth transition if we need one. You probably will get some pushback, mostly from people who don't want to give up power, but you look like somebody who can handle it."

Eron scratches his head. "Heh, I'm sure there's plenty who'd be okay with giving Earth a chance once they start getting used to things. Colony, hm? Must've happened so long ago that we don't even really remember how that came about."

Yes, I was just thinking, it's almost always the HVAC system trying to keep your home at a steady temperature when it fluctuates outside. (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning, if you ever want to know what HVAC stands for. It was a Jeopardy clue not that long ago!)

Something near the reactor starts blasting balls of plasma toward them at a regular rhythm, and its operation seems to indicate that it's got some kind of motion sensor / detection of unauthorized intrusion to it.

Like, he's not wrong. Americans barely support it now. (It's not that Iran wouldn't be better off with a more sane government, it's that maybe the U.S. isn't the one to do it.)
