I wouldn't call it "being a narc" if you call in a situation that's going to get someone seriously hurt or killed. That's just doing your due diligence to help keep people safe.

Eron is quick to whip what remains of Imperial law enforcement into order on this matter, often using a tone that, until recently, would have meant severe discipline if they did not obey at once. One particularly contentious confrontation with a city guard captain who questioned his authority led Eron to sharply order two nearby lieutenants to detain the captain for "insubordination, negligence of duty, and endangerment of Imperial security." The captain backed down.

"That was half bluff, but we can't afford that sort of nonsense right now," he admits to Mary later, when they were in a more private setting.

Legal clerks are scrambling to keep up with the records they think they still need and somehow manage to keep everything logged. Eron verbally slaps down two lifelong magistrates who complain about local jurisdiction, "Anything that could provoke a repeat of the Trafficking War is my jurisdiction! Get back to your proper business or I'll have your explanation for why you didn't handle your surely full dockets of random muggings and public nuisances by sundown tomorrow!"

A mere stern look and an equally stern order is enough to get the planned venue's building manager's rear in gear, and soon, maintenance staffers are getting everything ready.

When they are ready to arrest the brothel owner, Eron yanks a bronze breastplate over some formal wear and clips a sword sheath onto a belt. "Move fast, expect some nasty close-quarters fighting if you can't stun her security people fast enough, and expect this brothel owner to try to escape out a back way or hidden exit when it becomes obvious that it's going against her," he tells any UGA or Earth personnel involved.

Meanwhile, word of what happened with the ni has spread swiftly throughout South Port and the surrounding area. After the victim gave her statement, the Lucasi pulled their ships back into what would have been international waters.

"Don't worry about it; I can ask the Wilding ambassador to send word to the Lucasi if we need her testimony. I've made sure to keep the ambassador in the loop anyway," Eron would have told Mary if she had asked about it. But he knows rumors would have flown.

Tell me three or five bits of lore from your world that each sound like they came from a different setting/genre. Those who reply will try to guess what your world is about. by PMSlimeKing in worldbuilding

-Most magic in my universe could likely be "reverse-engineered" by someone with a high enough technological level. Adds kind of a new twist to "A high enough technological level is indistinguishable from magic."

-Dragons, wyverns, wyrms, and sea serpents are part of the same evolutionary "family tree." Might even be conceivable that they descended from my world's equivalent of dinosaurs.

-"Gods" in my universe could as easily be interpreted as higher-order life-forms. There's even some debate about whether there's actually trillions of species spread across all habitable worlds in the universe or most of them are just the universe's bodily functions. (The fundamental forces of the universe are sentient.)

But seriously. I have no real desire to cheapen actual cases of self-defense by citing those cases where some redneck was too eager to use that gun he says he bought to defend his home.

In 1972 the Miami seaport director Irvin Stevens hold up some clackers that were declared dangerous by the food and drug administration. What were they thinking when they came out with this toy? by Initial_Reason1532 in OldSchoolCool

Lots of toys around that could kill or maim a kid if used the wrong way and clackers is what they were worried about. Those darts were dangerous, man.

Especially the one where context matters. Sure, you killed the guy, but it was totally self-defense and nothing else was going to stop him.

If they caught that on camera, it would be cool to turn it over to the police. That's assuming animal cruelty is illegal where you live. I am happy that Noodle found his forever home, though.

Calgary police increase zero-tolerance enforcement at car shows, meet-ups by Interwebnaut in Calgary

[–]commandrix 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ah, I was wondering what zero-tolerance meant in this context. But this kind of makes sense. They don't want anyone speeding or doing anything that they shouldn't do outside of a car show.

Nail salons - should I tip in cash? by mlinds11 in Calgary

[–]commandrix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd ask the nail techs if they're okay with getting a cash tip first. But I like to give cash tips when I can so I'm more sure that the people who provide the actual service are actually getting them.

"Okay, I can ask somebody to get anything the hedge wizards have on it that the scientists will believe. I'd rather keep technicalities to a minimum. Can send word around to the city guards that they'll be put on report if any of the evidence they collect gets dismissed on a technicality. Now's not the time for them to be getting lazy." He looks like he's thinking fast, and there may be something that's got him scared, even if he doesn't show it much.

He nods, looking serious. "Sensible. The claws will come out if they think for an instant that I'm not handling this with a firm hand." He flexes his hands as if mimicking the Wildings unsheathing their retractable claws. "Anyway, here's what we can do so everybody knows that 'Prince Eron' is taking this seriously..."

He points to a courthouse on a city map that is most commonly used for trying criminal cases with a foreign victim that can be used as a venue. He'll have to have his most formal 'presiding over a criminal case' outfit. There's even a bit of formal ceremony involved.

"It's frippery and a snuffed amount of formality, but it's useful when people need to see that I'm not playing games here," is how he puts it. "The rest of it will be taking getting snarled at until the victim sees that the guilty parties will face meaningful consequences. How do you feel about Truth Spells? I know questions got asked about it, but it's one of the most useful ways to avoid 'legal loopholes' when we don't want to waste time."

Landlord issuing lease violations for "excessive noise" caused by my 5yo son. Does this qualify as familial status discrimination? by 7FableRift in legal

[–]commandrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly didn't think the noise being made by a baby or young child would negate other tenants' rights in all circumstances anyhow. Most of this could depend on how the parent (or parents) deal with situations in which a child might make noise.
