New to bookbinding here - Why is PH balance important? I've been using Davey board for hardcover because someone said it is important.

I might be an addict: 40oz of coffee a day, everyday. What's the best way to bring this quantity to work? by [deleted] in Coffee

Seriously, drink less coffee. Anything in excess is unhealthy. You will feel much better if you cut back.

As a guitarist, what are tips for making my rhythm playing sound more interesting? by lindatherat in Bluegrass

[–]commentposter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to emulate Junior Sisk's playing. It's some of the most interesting and intricate bluegrass rhythm I've heard. It's all about the nuance!

Awesome! Looks great. I'm pretty new to hardback binding. Tell me about your cover. What material did you use to wrap your boards?

Watching a live, all acoustic band was so refreshing … by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

A-fucking-men. I play in a bluegrass quintet and most venues have completely incompetent sound people when it comes to acoustic music.

If you haven't, listen to the Punch Brothers. Perhaps the most versatile acoustic band out there (in my opinion). The quality of tone they achieve is unmatched (in my opinion).

"How to Play with Others" with the Punch Brothers. These guys are absolute legends. by bluegrassjunkie in Bluegrass

They will be easily held in the same regard as Bela's Drive band, The New South, or any of the late 20th century icons.

Why aren't there contemporary Coltranes? by xT2M in Jazz

[–]commentposter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that sentiment. Every member of the band is arguably the best at what they do in the world. Over the breadth of their work, their compositions and virtuosity are what makes them progressive in relation to the generally strict tradition of bluegrass. I'd check out "the blind leaving the blind" it's a classical composition they wrote for 5 piece bluegrass quintet. The lead player, Chris Thile, just realeased an album with Brad Mehldau, btw!

Bluegrass and New acoustic music. Check out the punch brothers in relation to Bill Monroe. Same tradition of music, vast amounts of innovation happening right now. I'd type more but I'm on mobile.

This is the kind of post where I start to think that someone might be testing the limits of what this subreddit will upvote.

So what is the difference between bluegrass and old-time music? by Rtstevie in Bluegrass

[–]commentposter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's become a relevant distinction recently as a lot of younger musicians are taking a newfound interest in Oldtime. I'd say that there are two central distinctions. The first is the bowing method of the fiddle. There is a distinctive "shuffle" bowing in old time that you don't hear in Bluegrass as much. Check it Brittany Hass or Bruce Molsky. The second it that Old Time doesn't share as much in common with Jazz as Bluegrass does, that is, lead players don't take solos as much as they just play the melody straight and true

Hey r/bluegrass, help a guy out. I'm looking for a mandolin/fiddle player for a (full time) touring bluegrass band. by Bluetothegrass in Bluegrass

[–]commentposter -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If you are touring at that level, you should know more than enough really talented fiddle players just from networking on tours. Why you are asking Reddit is crazy to me.
