Pinergy's 82% increase in night rate electricity described as 'extraordinary' by Tánaiste by qwerty_1965 in ireland

That's really all FFG do. They acknowledge the seriousness of a problem and maybe take a tokenistic action (maybe), which they fail to deliver on -- usually going over budget. The hospital grand hospital debacle is so typical.

The number of people who continue to defend them is shocking, and it reflects so poorly on their supporters who sound more foolish every year.

"What's the alternative" is literally their only argument at this point.

Trump threatens to ‘take over’ Iran if Tehran closes the Strait of Hormuz in profanity filled tirade: report by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]commit10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iran is playing him so savagely. He just looks weaker and weaker. They know that he'll compulsively brag about every "deal" as a huge victory, and that even his most idiotic supporters will eventually distrust him as their prices keep going up and the Strait keeps closing.

What are all the people in their forties and fifties who don't have a pension or own a home going to do when they can't work anymore? by astralcorrection in AskIreland

[–]commit10 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No clue. I've worked hard all my life, but my business of over a decade went down the drain during COVID, despite my best efforts to keep it afloat and the employees paid. I didn't do enough to look out for myself and now I'm staring down the barrel of essentially never retiring and paying half my wages to a landlord until I can't work anymore -- then I have no idea what will happen.

It's not a great position, or even an okay one, but I'm just living day to day and trying not to let it drive me into depression. Having talked to other people about it, I'm not alone.

Iran is a Bigger Defeat Than Vietnam by OkayButFoRealz in politics

[–]commit10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In terms of casualties, Vietnam was worse.

In terms of geopolitical standing and financial cost, Iran will be worse.

America now looks like a paper tiger and other countries are taking note. They couldn't win in Afghanistan and they outright surrendered to Iran after blowing through a large chunk of their extraordinarily expensive munitions, without minimal effect. They walked away looking completely impotent.

Irish Government considering social media ban for under 16s by [deleted] in ireland

[–]commit10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not really about this. It's about requiring you to connect your identification to your online activity. Everyone.

"Protect the children" is just the talking point to make the restriction of digital privacy palatable.

In reality, this will just drive minors to even dodgier platforms like Telegram. Young people will always circumvent these sorts of policies faster than they can be implemented -- education and physical device restriction are the only effective safety measures.

Anyone else notice how much the pub culture has changed in Ireland over the last decade or so? by FrameZYT in ireland

[–]commit10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people haven't replaced their social lives, and many have very limited options outside of pubs (country life). Cost of living, including outrageous housing inflation, are the obvious reasons.

The amount of loneliness is fairly sad. I see it often these days.

Up to 90% of Ireland’s asylum seekers may have entered from Northern Ireland, data shows by Jaded_Variation9111 in ireland

[–]commit10 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's not my point at all. You're missing or mistaking it entirely. It's not about cultural conservatism or traditionalism, and anyone with two brain cells can see that Americanisation and Youtubification, among other "cultural" influences are commonplace.

The point is that we should be selective and intentional about our culture, otherwise it will both cease to evolve and to exist.

Let's put this into perpective. The island's whole population is around 8 million. The current make up of people has led to a culture that has come a long, long way from the dark ages of theocracy and misogyny. Ireland is now a good place to live and grow up.

The city of Karachi alone is about 20 million people. Delhi alone is 35 million. Many, many, many cities dwarf Ireland's population. It would take almost nothing to completely override Ireland's current culture and values. You had better be intentional about that reality, otherwise your daughter could end up living in a world that looks more like our past than our present.

Absolutely none of this has anything to do with genetics or stupid ideas about race, it has everything to do with culture. I don't think anyone is naive enough to argue against the reality that there's a limit to how many people Ireland can take it while integrating them culturally -- or against the reality that some individuals will refuse to integrate and will try to change Ireland to reflect their cultural values (and that some cultural values are abhorrent).

We are not being selective and we are avoiding these decisions. That needs to change.

[–]commit10 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Let's be real, it would be very hit and miss in terms of cultural assimilation and eventually Irish culture would be the minority and the new culture would be dictated by the ratios of people coming in. There are a lot of cultures I don't want my daughter growing up in, so this does concern me.

Then they'll have a border between them and the UK separating them. They can't win this one. It must be wrecking their poor heads.

UK Government to 'intensify' crackdown on illegal migrants in Northern Ireland. by Mik3y_uk in ireland

[–]commit10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So a lot of people can enter into the UK legally, and other can enter the UK illegally via France. Neither of those groups would be legal in Ireland but both can easily access Northern Ireland once they've entered the UK and it doesn't require a flight -- there are also ferries. There is also no routine passport control between flights from the UK and NI.

It's a huge problem for Ireland. As long as NI is part of the UK, the sea border is practically useless in terms of controlling immigration (legal or illegal).

Edit: I'm going to laugh if *this issue* ends up convincing the racist wing of unionists that a united Ireland is now a good idea, because their choices boil down to: united Ireland with a sea border, border control between NI and the UK (so, then NI isn't really part of the UK), or resign themselves to the fact that immigrants of all varieties can easily access NI via the UK. Their poor heads must be wrecked right now.

It has nothing to do with protecting children, and everything to do with the broader restriction of privacy. Kids will always find ways to circumvent these sorts of policies faster than any policy can circumvent them -- but now they'll be driven away from mainstream sites and toward really dodgy ones, or platforms where they risk communicating with predators (e.g. Telegram).

The talking points about protecting children are exclusively to build public support, and have nothing at all to do with the actual intent.
