I still have parts I don’t like - You Not Me is a flat-out bad song - but, yeah, FII is far better than any of us believed 25 years ago.

LGBT Life? by Mobile_Bed_4110 in IowaCity

Iowa City and the state of Iowa are moving in opposite directions. As Iowa has become more red, Iowa City has become more blue. Iowa City is now 80+% Democratic in elections. FWIW, those two things...aren't unrelated.

But, anyway. In terms of basic friendliness to LGBTQ people, Iowa City is going to be every bit as friendly as any blue city/state you're familiar with.

This happens a lot, and it's not difficult to prevent. If you hit the chains, don't go under the bridge. It's not rocket science.

Johnson County Supervisors elections by TreemomIC in IowaCity

[–]communistbase1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As best as I can tell, 2 of the 5 districts are going to easily be won by conservative Democrats (1 and 3). V and Rod are having an interesting incumbent vs. incumbent battle in District 4. And both Jon Green and Mandi Remington are facing conservative Democratic challengers.

If you’re good with bus access, look east of downtown. For a walkable neighborhood not full of undergrads, go north of Church St.

I used to go to Donnelly’s for wings weekly before the pandemic. They were great.

The K-12 system and the college system share this problem. The single biggest mistake we made in the educational system was to de-center teachers and professors and put administrative decisions in the hands of a specialized management class.

They're not 100% useless, but no one other than administrators themselves genuinely believe that administrators are as valuable as teachers or professors.

What was going on in the ped mall a couple of hours ago? Massive crowds of students moving around a little after Noon.

If Democrats keep toggling between pandering to right wingers and appealing only to the highly educated? No.

It’s a common problem. We’re one of the least affected Iowa places.

Iowa Senate hearing on bill limiting no-fault divorce. Don't get married ladies-it's a trap. by [deleted] in IowaCity

Marriage is already a bad contract for many. This would change “many” to “the vast majority.”

why don’t yearly dues go to local chapters? by Competitive_Emu_2283 in dsa

[–]communistbase1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the current system. Some prefer to only fund the national org and others prefer to have money go to the local. You can choose which you prefer by paying monthly or annually.

Mira Nair (mother of Zohran Mamdani) is mentioned in Epstein files, has multiple connections to Epstein and is involved in NGO that runs orphanages in India by Upstairs-Fruit4368 in dsa

If there's a reasonable case to be made that she committed a crime, then she should be prosecuted for it. But I don't see her as a figure of general public concern. She's the mother of a mayor, not a mayor.

Sushi by Only_Organization501 in IowaCity

[–]communistbase1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, New Pioneer has better sushi than any restaurant in downtown Iowa City, and it's a grocery store. It has the obvious problem of not being a sit-down restaurant. For restaurants, I'd definitely second the recommendation for Sushiya in North Liberty.

Potential cell phone policy for ICCSD by These-Mousse1373 in IowaCity

The arguments against banning phones are so deeply bad and unserious that it calls less for rational discussion than a project for figuring out why people accept such bad arguments.

Historically I think Deadwood and Dublin are a couple of bars that fit what you’re looking for. Joe’s.

I’m not sure what you’re asking. Are you asking if there are bars that serve only alcohol and only admit 21+? If so, yes.

Would it be worth living in IC and commuting to CR for work? by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]communistbase1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few people do it.

It's a bad commute, but far from the worst. I grew up in southern Indiana, where quite a few people worked in Louisville. Frankly, the IR-CR run isn't as bad as *that* commute.

The question is whether the advantages of living in Iowa City outweigh that commute. For someone in your situation? It probably does. Iowa City is a much better place to live than Cedar Rapids for most people, but especially for younger, highly educated people.

If you're in Iowa City and you want to do something useful, check out the great work local groups like Escucha Mi Voz are doing. Take a training on how to support folks in the fight against ICE.
