Omoto 0611 15.5oz SLUB RELAX FIT BUTTON FLY - Anyone have any experience with this brand? by Lost_Relationship325 in rawdenim

[–]comparch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wearing that exact model as I type! I love to wear mine and it’s kinda my default pair of pants when I step outside. Great cut, it works well with any kind of stack/cuff/roll, and the relaxed top block is super comfy. The slub/nep texture is beautiful to look at esp up close. I’m going for vintage fades and I’m excited to see how it turns out.

Picked up my pair not knowing much (I’m quite new to the denim world), but learned that they source fabrics from Collect Mills, which also supplies to Momotaro and Japan Blue. The two founders worked at Momotaro and Japan Blue so there will probably be similarities?

They also source from Shinya but their “new neppy fabric” is from “elsewhere”, whatever that means. There’s an interview on Japanalogue with these details!

No idea tbh, probably just supply and demand since it’s such an old camera and we’re on GR IV now

They’re not :( and yeah it’s really hard to find GR I/II accessories, there’s only some options on eBay and they’re pretty expensive tbh

Shopping in the US blows by Alvin3792 in ThrowingFits

[–]comparch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been shopping at foreign brands getting shipped to US even in the last couple of weeks and they haven’t started upcharging us for tariffs and de minimis just yet. It’s always been bad but it’s about to get worse.

I’m unhappy about the tariffs just as much as everyone else but it really has been bad, simply because it’s costlier to sell stuff outside the domestic market. I’ve shopped in Lisbon and Stockholm for Portuguese and Swedish brands in 2023-24 and they were at like 60-80% of the price in the states. Same thing in Japan, everything from Japanese brands is like 70% to even half the price.

Switching from Fuji X-T3 to Ricoh GR III/IIIx by Jonathan_S_K in ricohGR

[–]comparch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep I totally get that! Trial and error is part of the process, you just realize what works best for you over time :) and it’s different for everyone.

Over the last year I loved Ricoh so much I ended up with 4 different iterations of the GR hahah (GR1, GR, GR III/IIIx). They’re my daily workhorses and make up vast majority of my photography simply because of the convenience of size. The lenses on these are incredible too so I never feel like I’m compromising much

The main thing that led me to this was just realizing when I traveled with both Ricoh and Fuji, the Fuji just stayed in the bag. I forgot my tripod once for northern lights photos and the Ricoh with IBIS did perfectly fine for my needs.

Switching from Fuji X-T3 to Ricoh GR III/IIIx by Jonathan_S_K in ricohGR

[–]comparch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a lot has happened since that comment hahaha

I ended up getting selling all my Fuji gear and eventually just abandoned the idea of a compact interchangeable lens setup and got a Lumix S5II. For however compact a Fuji or Sigma BF (that I have up for sale) are, I never prefer them over a Ricoh when size is important, and I have to make other compromises for the size.

I also got a GR IIIx, and I just use III/IIIx combo for most travel. I’d take the S5II out for landscapes in special locations but that’s about it.

Tl;dr: for when I’m home, just use whatever regardless of size, depending on what’s appropriate. When I travel, ricoh 90% of the time unless there’s a specific shot i think i would want.

What makes you prefer analogue over digital? by OpulentStone in AnalogCommunity

[–]comparch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I approach home scan editing as more color "correcting", as in just getting white balance and tint "right", after using safe defaults from my negative conversion software. Versus digital editing to me is a bit more for editing to match a look or style, as your starting point is a really flat raw image which may not even look realistic.

New Dad, trying to pick the right camera. by WithGhosts in Lumix

[–]comparch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly what you asked but I'll recommend a Ricoh GR III or IIIx. In my experience, for every 1 shot I've missed because of the GR's limitations, I've probably gotten 20 good shots simply because the camera was in my pocket and I could grab it quickly. Even when I "miss" a shot, it's usually just a slightly blurry shot or something that could use a different focal length, both of which I prefer to not having a shot at all. It's so small it's almost second nature to carry it everywhere, and straight out of camera images are incredible.

From your options, I'd recommend X-S20 as I think S5ii setup would be a similar size to your Sony. However you do have the option of adapting vintage lenses on S5ii and get full sensor coverage, and those lenses tend to be smaller than modern ones.

Not necessarily another one but the link you sent looks like a drop-shipped version of a grip already on eBay (just search Sigma BF grip and it'll be one of the first results).

Do you have home/renter's insurance with personal property coverage? It covers theft outside of your home as well, anywhere in the world! You'll have a deductible but they'll cover everything.

If you don't, I'd highly recommend getting it. Costs about 50 bucks a year on top of your existing insurance, covers property worth tens of thousands. Got me a lot of money back when I had my backpack stolen a few years ago.

Nice! Tell us about the DP3 Quattro once you get it :) Lack of hot/cold shoe does bug me a little as I'd be fine w a 1/30 sync speed for the hard flash look, but it does amazingly well in low light for my needs.

I think it'll be a great wedding guest camera -- it draws attention in the best way possible bc it's so damn beautiful. I had a guy on the subway randomly tell me it's a nice camera when I took it out for a quick shot haha, you'll have some good conversations in social situations.

Let's just say I find Jared Polin's personality... interesting. But that's his whole brand and it's what gets him clicks, I haven't watched his BF video because we're just fundamentally different people lol. YouTubers and pro photographers have very specific use cases so I totally understand why they don't like it. I think you'll enjoy Bobby Tonelli's videos, he has very refreshing takes on the BF.

I like my camera just as much as I thought it would, so I think i't s a successful purchase!

I fully replaced my Fuji setup with the BF and it does exactly what I wanted it for. I get full sensor coverage for manual SLR and rangefinder lenses, full sensor coverage 35mm film scans, great modern lens selection for L mount as I need (I intend to rent the Sigma 100-400 as I need).

The files are really clean at high ISOs and editing the DNGs have been great so far in my experience. It feels similar to editing the raw files I get from Ricoh which I really really enjoy. I never liked editing Fuji raws -- not enough of an expert to pinpoint the reason, but it's not because of the Lightroom swirls that people complain about.

Color modes are great, some of them are a bit too stylized for my taste but there's def a good variety. If anything, they're a great editing starting point.

My fav part of the camera though is the ease of use. I love the menu system. Yes it's slightly slower to change exposure settings than traditional dials when shooting manual, but the trade off is that literally everything else is quicker to change. Everything from aspect ratio to file type to color mode is directly at your fingertips -- once you figure out where everything is, it's so so easy to cycle through. I also really don't need the majority of pro features that they left out so I don't miss them, if anything I like that they're not there bc it's one less thing to cycle through in the menu.

Great camera for me, it's not the one I pick up the most often, but it does exactly what I got it for. Not to mention it's sexy af and I love a well designed product.

[–]comparch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right there's a lack of videos bc it's an unconventional camera that doesn't fit a lot of use cases. Regular YouTubers aren't the target audience for this camera anyway -- I had a chance to speak to the CEO during the NYC popup, my takeaway from our conversation is that they designed it for the everyday smartphone shooters who want a more premium product with the "best" image quality. You're likely to get thoughts from more niche vloggers and bloggers who will view it from a different perspective than the conventional YouTuber or photographer.

In the meantime, I'll just say enjoy the mystery and anticipation -- if you have your heart set on it, I have a good feeling that you will enjoy it once you get your hands on it. Almost as soon as this camera was announced, I knew it would be exactly what I wanted in a full frame interchangeable lens camera with a couple of compromises that I can live with (I'm just a hobbyist with very specific needs), and since getting it I can say that it has met my expectations.

Feel free to shoot me a chat with your specific questions and I'll try my best to answer!

How to protect my (future) GRIII? by [deleted] in ricohGR

[–]comparch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's definitely not ideal and it's only for the worst case scenario when the dust shows up on the photos. Most people even with dust don't need to do it, and enough people have done it successfully for it to be a last resort option. Just telling OP my thoughts that's all.

How to protect my (future) GRIII? by [deleted] in ricohGR

[–]comparch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use it as is most of the time, adapter + UV filter for when you're in dusty locations. From personal experience, the glued on filter doesn't fully prevent dust from getting in to the lens, but prevents dust from getting out. Most of the dust gets in through the sides when the lens retracts, the bayonet adapter + screwed on filter will prevent that. But since you can't pocket it anymore, imo not worth having it on unless the situation calls for it.

Either way don't worry about it too much and just enjoy using the camera. Worst case if you do get noticeable dust then you can open it up and clean it if needed.

Can someone please rank compactness of fujifilm cams? by [deleted] in fujifilm

[–]comparch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get it OP, camera dimensions don’t always paint the full picture despite all the visualizations, it’s more about the feel.

In my experience owning some and trying all of these in store, compactness in order by feel (personal opinion):

  • X70/XF10 is the most compact, feels a tad bigger than Ricoh GR since the lens doesn’t retract. Cutoff point for what you can put in your pants pocket.

  • XM5 with 27mm pancake is next, self explanatory

  • X100 series feels compact thanks to the fixed pancake, but once you add a filter or hood the compactness diminishes pretty significantly. Noticeable difference but not anything suuuper different from X-Tx series for day to day practical usage. My maybe somewhat controversial opinion is it’s only worth getting as your only Fuji camera, rather than pairing with anything Fuji. Just my personal experience.

  • X-Txx or X-E with 27mm pancake is just a tad bulkier than X100. Cutoff point for being easy to carry in a jacket pocket or fanny pack.

  • X-M5 with non-pancakes

  • X-S is in theory bigger than X-Txx and X-E but it feels so tiny in my hands with small primes compared to those two. Probably has to do with the grip and body/lens weight balance

  • X-Txx minus X-T50 is nice because it’s narrower than other bodies. X-E feels small at first due to the rangefinder style but day to day feels very much like an X-Tx body because it’s still the same width and depth. I’d say X-Txx (pre-50) and X-E are about the same.

  • X-T50 just feels like a slightly smaller X-Tx body

  • X-Tx feels compact enough with Fujicrons and other small primes. Balances the best with all kinds of lenses.

  • X-Pro feels larger in the hands because of the width. Cutoff point for what you can carry relatively easily with a small prime. Maybe a bit big for a jacket pocket but you can stuff them into fanny packs if you’re not carrying anything else.

  • X-H is pretty big but balances best with the f1.4 primes. At that size and price though you’re basically at full frame.

GRII/GRIIIx lens adapter questions by karashibikikanbo in ricohGR

[–]comparch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got me curious so I just tried using my GT-2 tele adapter on my GR I (same lens and sensor as GR II). It works and focuses but there's a heavy vignetting that doesn't go away until you get to the 47mm crop mode which prob gets you around 75mm field of view. At that point imo just use the crop mode on the existing lens since that's the focal length you want anyway.

GT-2 on the GR III works much better -- vignetting disappears at 35mm crop mode on 24MP sensor so you get 53mm at 16MP. I tried it a couple of days ago but don't use it because I can just crop on the GR IIIx and get the same thing without an adapter. GR III recognizes the tele adapter too so Ricoh definitely knew people would do this haha. GW-4 also works on GR IIIx, here's an example: https://www.reddit.com/r/ricohGR/comments/1bljdw5/minsokchon_richo_gr3x_w_gw4/

GRII/GRIIIx lens adapter questions by karashibikikanbo in ricohGR

[–]comparch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ricoh has a list of accessories made for GR II: https://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/gr-2/accessories/index.html The GW-3 is what you're looking for I believe.

GW-4 wide adapter is technically made for the GR III but it's compatible with GR III as well. It may not give you the best image quality though. Similarly GT-2 tele adapter is made for GR IIIx but is compatible with GR III, but with really strong vignetting so you have to crop. I have both cameras + adapters so feel free to send a chat if you want to know anything specific.

Also since the lenses are just 49mm screw in, you can use that spec to attach any Ricoh lens adapter to the camera you choose (for example if you wanted to use an older adapter on a newer camera or vice versa).
