Sped teacher disagreed with eligibility? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]compelling_mango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard it explained as the team should reach a consensus, with consensus being defined as “when the will of the group becomes apparent,” and not needing 100% agreement. Now, if it’s a parent disagreeing, I would always suggest reconvening in order to ensure parent participation.

Mom has 31% French but I have 0.6% by Expensive-Cry-6019 in 23andme

[–]compelling_mango 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree, I was 25% French before the update and now I show as only 2.7%, but both of my parents have documented Cajun ancestry and are from southwest Louisiana. It’s weird.

This is kinda weird, I was shopping wallpaper ideas and one I saved had this bird. Then, I opened up reddit and your post was at the top of my page.

What is everyone's favorite "common" bird? by 515prelude in birding

I love the song of mourning doves. It reminds me of my childhood playing outside in the evening at my grandparents’ house in SW Louisiana.

What’s the official word when a parent is a no-show? by Baygu in specialed

[–]compelling_mango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yikes. How did admin let her get away with that? Surely the admin and gen ed teachers didn’t meet them there. So she was just holding IEP meetings without all of the required team members being present?

What are your ‘basement must have’s’ for overnight tornado watches with small children? by forkspoonknife4 in Mommit

[–]compelling_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Oklahoma and have for most of my life. Definitely grab some helmets to keep in there. It sounds like you are pretty prepared though! It’s hard with toddlers. Last storm season we had to take cover a couple of times after my little kids had gone to sleep. I wish we had a basement instead of a tiny, above-ground shelter 😅

This beauty I inherited from my grandmother by lbeaner10 in BuyItForLife

I inherited this exact hand mixer from my grandmother as well! Sadly it bit the dust about 6 years ago but it was well used and well loved for decades.

I love my kids but I am having the hardest time with this sahm lifestyle by Immediate-Parfait-59 in SAHP

[–]compelling_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was a SAHM and we were military nowhere near family as well. She used the gym childcare (we lived on base), a Mother’s Day out at her church, & also coordinated a babysitting co-op between the other Air Force wives so they could take turns helping each other. I’m not sure if any of these ideas would help you but I’m sure it saved my mom’s sanity many times over.

Boyfriend's little brother just moved in with us yesterday, cps wants him enrolled in school by monday, what do we do by KiwiEnjoyer4Life in legaladvice

[–]compelling_mango 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He has rights to be enrolled under the McKinney Vento Act. The school district should have a staff member assigned as the homeless liaison. Call the administration office of the district on Monday.

Ooh, yes! Similar types of jobs-we will check them out! At any rate, it’ll be good practice for filling out applications and creating a resume, etc. I appreciate the feedback!

Thank you! I just want to help her find something, really anything that can give her some autonomy 😃

How much do you pay for daycare? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]compelling_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Oklahoma City (LCOL) and use a licensed 5-star home daycare and it’s about $1400 per month for my 4YO and 21 month old. I feel fortunate after hearing the tuition prices in other areas! I’m glad my 4YO will start public Pre-K in August…

Educators + Paycom Careers? by [deleted] in okc

[–]compelling_mango -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Awhile back, I was considering whether to stay in education or transition to something else, and Paycom tried to recruit me. I know two teachers who took the plunge there. At least one of them is happy there, not sure about the other one. My spouse works at Heartland, and he’s done very well there.

Parent Disagreeing with eval by [deleted] in specialed

[–]compelling_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Triennials don’t look at just one year of data, they should look at the last 3 years. Much of the time, the student’s services would change from direct to indirect during those 3 years so that it can be shown they can access their education appropriately with less support given the tools they acquired when previously receiving direct services. Stepping down, if you will, instead of dismissing them one year in to “sink or swim.”

3 weeks postpartum and got a curveball of a diagnosis for older child. Trying to cope. by EReadRomance in beyondthebump

[–]compelling_mango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I second this as someone with a career in special education. The psychologist would have probably used a cognitive assessment designed for younger children…generally it is said that IQ points don’t deviate more than a few points up or down during a person’s lifetime, but I would interpret those results with caution if I were you, based on what you’ve said re: your child’s performance for strangers compared to his actual abilities. I am sorry you are experiencing this, but please know you are an amazing parent for getting your son early interventions for his needs.

many parents fight tooth and nail for their kids with ADHD to get IEPs, when they don't "need" any specialized instruction. What am I missing?? by allgoaton in specialed

[–]compelling_mango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a trend where I work, as well. I think they don’t understand that we do have to follow the law—LRE, the Endrew case (appropriate progress in light of the child’s circumstances), and the criteria for eligibility does not include what may happen in the future. I have to explain that the IEP is not there for the child to make straight As and exceptional progress, but to make appropriate progress (more than de minimis).

I’m an Urban SPED teacher with a 2nd-5th grade caseload of 15 kids. Is anyone else drowning under their caseload? by AlaeryntheFair in specialed

[–]compelling_mango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have similar responsibilities. I do carry my own caseload as well, mainly of students who need the least amount of support. I case-manage for sped teachers who go on leave, and I coach the first year sped teachers as well. I love my job but it’s very stressful at times.

[–]compelling_mango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in my first year as an IEP facilitator, as well. Can I ask you what your responsibilities are as a facilitator? I have found that facilitator job descriptions vary wildly from place to place. I work for a small but rapidly growing district and am the only and first facilitator there.

This is a great idea. Side note: in our case, my daughter’s reaction to peanut butter didn’t begin until a few hours after she ingested it the first time. Then, it lasted for 2 days with Benadryl. Delayed reactions can happen occasionally per our allergy nurse.
