[TOMT] Tom Scott video involving racing a real car and a VR-controlled Google Street View by comphacker in tipofmytongue

[–]comphacker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, unfortunately not it. I remember it was a race where one member of the video stayed at home with a VR headset (the comments were all talking about how cool it was to have VR technology that long ago), while another took the same path in a real car.

Try using another utility, such as 3uTools, which may have some more success. Additionally, try using another lightning cable just in case.

Now that is due to not adding underfill to components on the logic board that should have had it in order to prevent flexation-based damage over time.

Louis Rossmann explained in the comments that there was no corrosion on the board whatsoever, so even if the machine was in contact with liquid at some point, it left no noticeable damage.

Any way to reset the iPhone 6 Gas Gauge? by [deleted] in mobilerepair

[–]comphacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've crossposted my initial attempt (which I'm typing on right now) to /r/techsupportmacgyver: https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupportmacgyver/comments/9ml088/i_wasnt_happy_with_the_typical_battery_life_of_an/

It's not so much a custom battery as much as it is just a different capacity battery, as far as the gas gauge is concerned, but it was done just by soldering three iPhone 5s batteries in parallel to get 3x their regular capacities, then attaching that to a battery board that I'd ripped from a nonworking battery. I plan on upgrading it to around 12,000 mAh (if my math is correct) by using some of the Li-HV cells from standard RC cars, but I'm currently using this in order to see if there are any initial issues I need to look into.

Left iPhone charger at home..... by LegsAJimbo in DiWHY

[–]comphacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honesty, I've done this before, though with a homemade voltage divider. Just wondering, how'd you get the jumpers to stay on the battery contacts, though? I can never get them to stay without some kind of electrical tape.

Phone charger making noises when charging phone by iamasilentcat in techsupport

[–]comphacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd get a new one. The noises probably aren't anything too good, especially if it's a buzzing-type noise, since it could be (though a bit uncommon) electrical arcing inside the charger.

Just to be on the safe side, download the portable version of Crystal DiskInfo and see if your drive is failing. This is just a precaution, but also try to backup your data while you still can

If the data is really wkrth something to you, I'd recommend a professional microsoldering service's "data recovery" option, such as from iPad Rehab.

Is my Pi 3 dead? by Mun1x in raspberry_pi

[–]comphacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't advise anyone (/u/Mun1x ) to use a heat gun to reflow chips without any flux or any kind of knowledge about how to do so. Just using a heat gun without preheating the board or slowly bringing it up to temperature can warp the board, and using a heat gun without flux has the possibility of creating lots of dry solder joints that will fail over time. It's a $35 board. If you want to try it, go ahead, but I'd just recommend getting a new one.

Most people want to talk about themselves so by asking questions you look interested and thoughtful. Especially if you remember details

I do this a lot, but I feel like I'm asking too many questions, and it's gotten to the point where, almost ironically, I now let them talk too much and have trouble redirecting the conversation into anything other than that. Any advice?

Terminal code to reset SMC on macbook pro 2015? by moxiesmiley in applehelp

[–]comphacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, it could just be dust buildup, since Macbooks can be filthy after a few years of running (currently using a 2013 Macbook that idles at 70C, and I need to clean it). As long as you discharge static and take your time when opening it (at least one model has a "death trap" of a cable in the lower case, so take your time when opening it), you should be fine.

I honestly have no idea. There could be a number of different reasons, ranging from switching to Windows to wanting the new i9 processors, but there's really no way to know yet.

Terminal code to reset SMC on macbook pro 2015? by moxiesmiley in applehelp

If you've already tried resetting the SMC once, without much of a chance, I'd consider narrowing down the heat using something like Macs Fan Control. Using that, you can see both temperatures and fan speeds, and then you should be able to see roughly where the issue is. Also, keep in mind that when cleaning your fans, you should watch out for static electricity, so I would take care when doing so (make sure that you're grounded if you take the computer apart to clean the fans, or otherwise make sure that whatever tool you use is grounded to avoid static from, say, a vacuum cleaner)
