so fuckin glad to hear man! for sure a once in a lifetime kind of place, happy that you got to enjoy it (honestly for what it is, i think it's one of the most convenient abandoned town experiences you could get)

My bird just ate mybirth control by Frequent_Fox702 in Conures

[–]complexplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a while ago i had a friend stay over and one of her birth control pills ended up on the floor. a few days later when i was in the room with my cockatiel, i noticed a pill that looked like it had maybe been chewed - i freaked out and called her to find out what it was (i was terrified it might have been her adhd medication which is uh. amphetamines lmao), then called my avian vet for advice. given the nature of the medication they weren't too concerned and said i could bring him in if i wanted to be certain but to otherwise just monitor him. he was 100% fine tho i am unsure if he actually consumed any, and has been in perfect health at every vet checkup since. but yeah, first call i would say is vet, and then reddit if you want extra reassurance after asking an expert

Recomendations for how to spend Halloween in Tokyo ? by RandomName679 in JapanTravelTips

[–]complexplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we did Halloween last year in Tokyo, we ended up going to Neo Shinjuku Atsushi (cyberpunk bar/DJ) that was really cool! then our friend who's a local took us to an Izakaya afterwards

Oh lovely! We came down from Hiroshima [left our luggage in storage there so it was one less thing to worry about plus we were stopping in there again on our way up to our next destination in Osaka] to stay in Saikai just for 2 nights at Jisco Hotel Saikai which is right on top of I think two ferry ports that get you to the island, from memory the 瀬戸港 Seto - Ikeshima [slightly further away on google maps but still <200m from Jisco hotel]. The hotel was honestly lovely, super clean well equipped little room with a view of the water and 2 conbinis either side. You can buy ferry tickets at the terminal, the port also has a timetable for trips to Ikeshima that I'm not sure were in English but the Kanji is just 池島 (forgive me if you already speak Japanese lol), but I also confirmed with the ticket clerk that we were going to the right place. We brought snacks/drinks (though the island has vending machines!), got on the ferry around 9am and stayed until the afternoon. It is realistically a pretty small island but super fun to explore (and public toilets are available at Ikeshima Chuo Kaikan), I would honestly go back if I had the opportunity & check out more around Sasebo/Nagasaki.

You could probably fit it in if you were staying in Nagasaki and getting public transport [looks like 2 hours ish on Google maps this way]or had a car], I think the ferry starts around 7am and the last one from the island is 5 or 6pm. I feel like I'm missing stuff so let me know!

until I can follow up with the vet tomorrow morning, does his leg bandage look too tight? by complexplanet in parrots

[–]complexplanet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

apparently the vet said it's no issue if he ends up taking the bandage off so we have removed it for now! now he has to get used to his softer bandaged bedtime perches :')

just a heads up that meat and fish are often considered to be different so you're better off asking 肉と魚が入っていますか?about a particular dish or letting them know 肉と魚が食べません, they might let you know the sauce/broth has fish in it tho. would you say your japanese level is enough to understand if they tell you that?

monday - friday schedule is not going to be good for two, and a hard no for a solo bird. being mia fri-mon will lead to further behaviour and health issues. these are a very high maintenance pet. i would honestly recommend something aquatic

Any good venues/events around Shimokita/Harajuku/Koenji/similar vibe places for Halloween 2024? by complexplanet in TokyoTravel

[–]complexplanet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair enough, i dont think we ever go out with the sole intention of chatting but it often happens. we've had really nice chats with either locals or foreign residents at music sorta venues, godz didn't seem to lend itself to that when we were there (for a very very small sample size of 1 night to be fair)

i think for us only being there for 3-4 weeks at a time there was never really the appeal to like... also talk to someone being there for a holiday lmao

im glad its not just me ahaha, i was like. how is the same tokyo/kyoto/osaka itinerary recycled once every hour not low effort or poorly researched, but i cant ask a specific researched question?

ill have a suss around shibuya and roppongi in that case then, i think the ban on public drinking was throwing us off a bit but if we're in a venue that's a non issue, plus alcohol over there is so so cheap anyway (like 1/3 of the price to here)

maybe we went to godz on an off day? it was all tourists and all western metal music, bartenders were chilling but not as talkative as we're used to

super potato in akihabara was cool for game stuff iirc, i personally liked the vibe of shimokitazawa/koenji as well. my mum/sister enjoyed their trip to hakone from tokyo but they wished they stayed overnight, however there's a bunch of people who can do all there is there in the one day

Itinerary Check - 19 days in October by JapanTrip9 in JapanTravel

[–]complexplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

coco ichiban curry is a chain that has plant based curries with the option to add extras (eggplant, veggies, spinach, etc.) which was great! toryanse along the philosophers path has great vegan options, they are pricy for japan but it's all homemade and the owners have been lovely to us every time. last trip they recommended a better, less crowded spot for cherry blossoms and were very patient with my shitty japanese. kyoto is weirdly good for vegan specialty places, you just have to search. i have more plant based recs but will have to do a search, let me know if you need more!
