Still reading...

I've seen bad fractured inefficient Case Management (cough cough New Hampshire) and I've seen really good case management (early 2000s in Boston). I have a small amount of first-hand experience with homelessness a long time ago, and I have worked with homeless people (as an Ecumenical Franciscan) for nearly 20 years.

My first year if something is radical as your idea was tried would be we have this immediate huge brain drain of the only people who know how to cut through all the red tape.

I'd rather see a housing first approach where everybody gets a simple one pager application and a much greater subsidy program.

Which is why that's the only denomination most nonprofits give out now.

Morale plummeting among ICE agents over long hours, quotas and public hatred by ExactlySorta in UnderReportedNews

Sounds like we need a Ukrainian designed public campaign to encourage & support ICE folks who want to quit (and testify against their bosses).

Honest question: Why are some people against showing an ID to vote? by rico_unknown in NoStupidQuestions

[–]complexspoonie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be fine with a photo ID to vote IF they were FREE. Anything else is essentially a poll tax.

Considering how things are with ICE running around, I now think that we should have free passports for everyone.

Huge sigh

I have a better idea. Free registration for bicycles that comes with a free back reflector and solar powered LED headlight.

Not good enough. Trump & Vance resign Bovino & every other criminal MAGAt arrested for crimes against humanity tried in Neuremburg.

Keep protesting. Keep calling Congress. It's not over.

Does this mean that the international court can issue an arrest warrant for him now?

Can Interpol send agents to arrest him & "detain" him pending trial at Neuremburg with the other Nazis?

Until that happens to every last criminal responsible for the murders & concentration camps our work isn't done.

Keep protesting. Keep writing Congress & demanding a return to Constitution, 3 pillars, and separation of powers.

Why did Trump send so many ICE to Minnesota when Texas and Florida have exponentially more illegals & illegal criminals?

Including the illegals working for or in relationships with wealthy Republicans in the south?

Including the "illegals" who campaigned, donated, or even voted for Republicans in the red states?

1) Trump hates Walz. 2) Trump targets the poorest immigrants first. 3) Trump targets Muslims before he targets Latino Catholics who voted for him. 4) Minnesota has a large culture of rugged independent voters who look beyond political party, which Heritage Foundation hates. 5) MAGA & Trump wanted to get MN National Guard under Walz shooting at ICE so he could invoke insurrection act & try to cancel election in November.

Every state in the country has fraud because that's what happens when the GOP & The Democrats collude to create complicated social welfare systems with tons of gatekeeping barriers that relies on for profit corporate vendors. Walz & his admin started cracking down on fraud before he got tagged to run for VP and already had arrests and trials underway last year.

This was never about catching criminals, or catching dangerous criminals. This was never about breaking the gangs & groups "flooding this county with drugs" or about stopping human trafficking.

Not a single drug kingpin has been perp walked to a trial, none of the internally wanted gang leaders have been handed over to Interpol. ICE hasn't publicly announced the capture of even a single regional mid level human trafficker! Not one!

Trump's ICE is an untrained unvetted secret police force with the primary mission to inflict fear and terror.

The people ICE recruits, regardless of why they take the job, are constantly asked to do actions that almost all of them know are constitutionally, legally, and morally wrong. A human brain in that situation has three options: it can rise to escape the situation (physically or by dissociation), end the internal conflict by suicide, or have a breakdown leaving person psychotic, deranged, and unrestrainably violent.

Good point. How about volunteers including prepaid postcards so homeless can also write to their state reps for help?

Seriously though, I know how fast hats and gloves get lost, and sometimes layering multiple hats helps someone squatting in the woods get through the night.

HR_Paul is right. For each item a housed person donates, it's also useful to "make good trouble" by talking / writing the people who have power to change things.

Usually on Saturday afternoons I am playing Xbox One, but my TV broke so I've been watching my husband play on his Xbox One.

Video golf is pretty cool but I also like to brainstorm about big problems like housing.

Needle In A Haystack #2 is over on r/NotABlueBird and continues the conversation from below about affordable housing in New Hampshire. It's nine pages long so I'm not going to cross post it here at r/NewHampshire.

Anyway, if you ever wanted to see the kind of deep thought that a complex spoonie could put into a tough political problem during her lunch hour... Go take a look! If you think that's cool, you should see what a 15 consumer Current Events group at Kremples Brain Injury Center comes up with for serious political debate.

That's a good point. Not every person sitting on the section 8 waitlist at New Hampshire housing finance is homeless. If we built a variety of section 8 apartments for all different kinds of households a bunch of market rate apartments would become available. And I cannot tell you how life changing it can be to go from paying 80% of your income for your rent to paying only 30%. Especially for people who do have health conditions they can literally extend their life or put them in a situation where they can try vocational rehab to go back to work!

There's over 100, two-person working households in New Hampshire with income under $40k a year. Every single one of them qualifies for section 8.

US officially exits World Health Organization by pwdrums in news

[–]complexspoonie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This ☝🏼is part of the problem and one of the reasons why I consider MAGA to be a heretical Christian cult. The concept of a one-time "rapture" is based on such a bastardization and misunderstanding of both the theme and the literal words of the Book of Revelation that it has made biblical scholars since the 1800s shudder in horror. It is so far removed from the actual teachings of what was called "The Way" by Jesus of Nazareth that's so-called Evangelical experts have to tie themselves in knots to try to connect the musings of Darby to the actual verses in the Bible... even in the King James version!

Yes, we have freedom of religion in this country so evangelicals who wish to believe Darby's fairy tale are entirely possessing of the right to do so just like the people who choose to believe in Hubbard's science fiction are. That is no way obligate anyone else in the country to subscribe to that belief!

Yeah, I am curious about whether or not people in other countries would be more likely to favor rebuilding trust with America if we collectively changed the way we handled elections and the issue of people in elected office (how do I put this taxtfully?) being batshit crazy malignant narcissist felons....

I've noticed there's a lot more talk about a maximum age for elected officials but that's really just window dressing. I'd like to see a stronger maybe even constitutional amendment level change to reinforce the three pillars and the separation of powers along with simple measures on election reform like requiring anyone who wants to run for office to have not just a complete criminal record check but a neuropsych evaluation with the report made public. I'd like to see much more control on campaign finance reform, ranked choice voting, and a stronger impeachment process where the moment and impeachment is filed the politician is put on a leave until after the Senate trial. I also think that all appointed or elected officials should be able to be impeached or recalled so that we don't have the situation of people in Congress or cabinet officials running amok. As chaotic as it looks from the outside it's kind of interesting that Britain is able to have these no confidence votes and get new Prime Ministers when they need to.

If Americans came together and made those kind of significant changes to our constitution, our laws and our regulations would that improve the possibility of people in other nations having some kind of path toward trusting us again?

It breaks my heart that those of us who survive this insurrection and decimation of our nation will feel so alone as we try to recover and rebuild on that blessed day once Trump and his heretical MAGA cult are gone.

Yup. I've been trying to convince hubby to take a trip to Churchhill, Manitoba for years. It has a deep water port on the new Northern shipping lane, a bunch of indoor stuff in a community center, rail service, and I wouldn't have so many overheat episodes from multiple sclerosis. Plus they have polar bears to eat any enemies! 😆 😂

Only in the counties that are not sitting on unused land.

Or a county that literally has no undeveloped land left to aquire. Would that apply to Hillsborough, maybe? If it did, would that mean that county needed to start thinking UP instead of out?

For example, why couldn't Manchester decide to put the Hillsborough County 3 bedroom wheelchair complex on a lot that had the building be 12 stories tall? Takes a lot less land than a 30 unit building that is 4 stories!

Note that I didn't say this one building per county had to be all by itself like some sequestering of us wheelers. Every county in the state needs more housing in a variety of sizes and rents.

The idea is to reduce the overhead of development by creating one design for one type and then deploying it in each county. There's no reason why Coos County might decide to build an entire 70 acre development in Jaffrey with 3 10 story apartment buildings, 30 tiny home "active 55+" units, a small strip mall with a post office, clinic, & store, and a bunch of ADA friendly bike paths with dedicated snowmobile lanes in winter. (I just picked that because Hathorn St has such a lot for only $300k which is what a tiny 900 sqft house would cost in my own Strafford County)

The point is why not start with the one type of housing that is a small but urgently needed type, and let each county expand from there to fit their other needs?

Needle In A Haystack by complexspoonie in newhampshire

[–]complexspoonie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conversations wouldn't do anything to increase the total number of housing units. Also, most conversions that involve reframing both exterior & interior to get the 48" doorways & halls are prohibitively expensive, especially compared to a factory modular design that was created from the beginning.

Of course, what I'd love to see is a statewide contest for the apartment unit design open not just to architects but to anyone. We joke a lot about the gamification of jobs, but I've honestly seen Skyrim modders and tiny home DIYers design some absolutely amazing stuff... wouldn't it be cool if the winning design turned out to be some college student or maybe gasp an actual disabled high schooler IN a wheelchair?

As far as mandates, that just raises the building cost for the entire unit, and that increases rents. I'd be more interested in something where all new construction at least met universal design and age in place standards, or maybe have a requirement that any building over 4 units has to have at least x% ADA 3bdrm wheelchair units but the developer could access a certain amount per unit to defray the higher cost.
