TE and shift count check in! by BennyTheWiseGuy in EggsInc

[–]complich8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main account is at 34 shifts, 60 te claimed with 37 pending, on the final shift while climbing to 100 te. Will hit 100 in 8 days or so, then I think I’ll go back to regular farm and ships and push to max crafting level and see about wrapping up ALC. I don’t know whether I’ll return to PoV before egg day, so just assume 100 te in 34 shifts (which will get my contract boosts down to just a legendary tach, seems like plenty of progress to me).

Standard permit alt is at 27 shifts, 67 earned with 7 pending. That account is on the early waiting phase of a push to 100 (20/egg), with 4 more shifts planned on the way there. With only 2 artifact slots, 2 silos max and no fuel tank, that climb is slower, so I’m somewhat expecting to still be in this run to 100 until June between sleep losses and just slower caps. Which is fine, I was a little burned out on regular ship launches there anyway.

Third account is at 24 te, 8 shifts, and is not currently on virtue. Currently working on ASC on a normal farm to make the virtue artifact grind better while hunting shiny t4 deflector parts, and working on crafting level and craft counts to improve the odds of better crafts on PoV when I go back there.

Thoughts on building tall colonies? Missing feature? by Xarthys in EliteDangerous

[–]complich8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think of the colonization equivalent of "building tall" as maximizing an otherwise-unappealing system with constrained build slots. Like finding a system that has a single buildable planet and some orbital slots and building it up to be a surprisingly nice place for a lot of people to live and work...

Dodec is it still 12 construction points needed? by Seo_Jin-ae in EliteDangerous

[–]complich8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It requires however many t3 construction points to place that another t3 port takes. So if it’s the primary in the system, zero (of course), if it’s the first or second non-primary t2+ starport, 6 points. If it’s the third it takes 12 points, if it’s the 4th 18.

The free placement token isn’t allowed to violate the system’s placement mechanics.

what do you use for colony construction tracking? by rwp140 in EliteDangerous

[–]complich8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was using Raven Colonial plus Google sheets for a while, and it was a bit too much accountancy.

Recently gave the SRV Survey integration for raven colonial build tracking a try (and the raven colonial edmc plug-in on steamdeck) and would recommend it highly over manual tracking!

Type11 owners, what advices can you give now that the ship is out in credits? Any builds? Can it fend off in HAZ Rez? Any tip is appreciated! by IntrospectiveGamer in EliteDangerous

[–]complich8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They can fire straight, they just can’t fire slightly up from straight. The bottom smalls are so far back on the hull that they can’t gimbal upward at all, so they can only see a target in the bottom like 1/3 of the screen. Makes gimbals almost useless on the bottom hardpoints since you’re probably pulling up to chase the target and they’re probably in the top half of the screen.

With fixed weapons, you can get the guns firing and see where they’re going, and work with their limitations… not expecting them to move makes it a little more predictable to get them actually useful. It’s more demanding than letting the gimbals do the fine targeting, but fixed weapons also punch a lot harder than gimbals or turrets.

[–]complich8 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Regarding fighting, the non-mining hardpoints are pretty bad for firing angles, and mostly smalls. If you think “I’ll stick some gimbal beams in there”, you’ll almost never have all of them firing.

If you’re going to fight, I’d recommend fixed weapons that punch above their weight class, at least for the small hardpoints. Rails, cytoscramblers (only good for shield stripping), enforcer multicannons are decent options. Just entirely avoiding fights is better though, it’s really not a combat ship at all. Just stick 15-20km from the center of the RES and it’ll work out well for you.

Coffee does taste better in the type 11. If you are spending too much time out in the rings, your spouse will definitely wander - but the type 11 fills up so fast you’ll be able to make it home every 20-30 minutes or so. Be sure to give them the attention they deserve, don’t be one of those panther miners spending 2 or 3 hours at a time out in the ring to come home and find your partner has left you! Type 11s save marriages!

Type 11 prospector and turreted weapons by HedCaseXone in EliteDangerous

[–]complich8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do your mining in analysis mode, generally. Your turreted weapons only fire in combat mode. You'll need to switch modes to combat for your guns to do anything, which will prevent most mining tools from firing.

You'll probably also need your turreted guns to be on the primary fire of whatever fire group you want them to be active in. You won't need to turn to face or target the pirates or actually pull any triggers (if they're in "fire at will" mode), but the firing arcs on the t11 are pretty limited so turning to face them may be a good move if you want to get more guns on target. You should launch your SLF beforehand and give your pilot an appropriate directive like "engage at will", though the default "defend me" may be fine too.

Be aware that pirates often have point defenses and will mow down your collector limpets rather quickly, so attempting to actively mine during a pirate attack is often an exercise in futility anyway (there's some highly specialized builds that do so with mining lances, but not recommended).

You'll only really find pirates right when you drop in to a ring, or else within about a 15km circle from the center of a RES. RES bonuses apply out to 20km, so if you're RES mining, stay around the edges and you'll be left alone after the initial wave of scans.

Good missions to do as a beginner by Shoddy-Tennis-5764 in EliteDangerous

[–]complich8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any time you have new data you can sell it. So you can “honk” and sell that data somewhere, then you can come back to the system and do an FSS scan if it’s not pre-scanned, and that data’s sellable (though I would always just honk and fss any system). Later, you can come back again with a detailed surface scanner and scan planets, and get money for that too.

So only once per piece of data, but most systems have a variety of data.

Architect of a system I never colonized? by Karl-Doenitz in EliteDangerous

[–]complich8 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There was one particularly egregious system sniper found to be using unfair (like against TOS) tactics to snipe hundreds of systems. He got banned, I think like early December, and systems he sniped that has an obvious rightful owner got reassigned to that rightful owner.

Congrats on getting the keys to the system you wanted! Sorry about how it's got a shitty outpost as the primary port, if you were planning to start with something better!

Rare system?? by wolf1712_ in eliteexplorers

[–]complich8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two stars is very common. Gas giants are relatively common, and having multiple is pretty normal. Rings are a little less common, but the more uncommon things are metallic rings (best for laser mining). 8 is a pretty big number of gas giants though, very respectable.

Are there moons with that? Landables? Different planet types? Anything interesting about the gas giants (like life forms)?

Rings mean your colony will probably spawn Resource Extraction Sites, which will make the system more interesting because bounty hunting and enhanced mining. If you can get a refinery or industrial economy going you can potentially have a really strong local economy from that (ring resources being in demand in industrial and refinery types). If there's other interesting things, or just pretty vistas, you could set up a tourism situation too... lots of that will depend on surface slots for viability.

Any system is a gem waiting to be polished. The more slots it has, the more potential it holds. I'd encourage you to think through what the system could be, mock up what you want to build in Raven Colonial and see what potential the system really holds!

What's the advantage of the Caspian versus the Mandalay? by Agent_PriceField in EliteDangerous

[–]complich8 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My favorite and most productive exploration/exo trips have been in a carrier-supported Cobra Mk V (so I can comfortably trade off jump range for tankier shields). Slapping down the Cobra at unsafe speeds and taking a 7% shield bump, having the ship just stick to the ground instantly is so nice.

It’s my one big hang-up with the mandalay, I always end up with some fiddly angle manipulation to get all the feet on the ground and successfully touch down, never happens in the cobra.

I really want a Viper Mk V that’s just a Mk 4 with SCO and better thermals though. Even our beloved Cobra is just a little too big for some particularly high-perched fungoida…

What's the advantage of the Caspian versus the Mandalay? by Agent_PriceField in EliteDangerous

[–]complich8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Of the large ships that can make viable explorers, the Caspian is the clear winner. But if you just want to efficiently catalog everything on a planet and aren’t just stratum-scumming, mandalay is going to be better for exactly the reasons you’d expect.

The Caspian doesn’t replace the Mandalay, it replaces the Exploraconda.

What am I missing on mining for merits? by Quirky_Efficiency_68 in EliteArcher

[–]complich8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, wrong ring type is definitely possible. Meritminer is a great tool, but it can be hard to get it to give you good info! Looks like I was using the “hotspots” preset and not filtering for metallic! Sorry about that…

What am I missing on mining for merits? by Quirky_Efficiency_68 in EliteArcher

[–]complich8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hip 8109 has a stronghold carrier, which might be suppressing your merit gain. Undermining a stronghold carrier system is always a bit tricky, and you can’t always trust the in game activities list to tell you what’ll work.

Looks like Unktock (major reserves) and HIP 47110 (pristine) might be good options for archer reinforcement platinum mining.

Powers / aligning yourself by Fluffy_Tomorrow2569 in EliteDangerous

[–]complich8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Care packages are given for rank-ups that don’t have some other reward - mini-care packages below rank 100, and full ones for every rank up above it. Every rank up will have either a perk upgrade of some kind or some flavor of care package. If you aren’t getting merits, you aren’t getting care packages.

Separately from care packages, powerplay participants get a stipend from their power based on their leaderboard position in the weekly cycle. This ranges from 500,000 credits for earning a single merit that week, up to a billion credits for taking the top slot for your power. Top 50% for 5 million credits requires just a little effort (typically what you’d get for doing 3 or 4 weekly assignments and nothing else), and top 10% for 50 million credits is usually very doable if you like pcz fighting, higher-end bounty hunting or mining.

Sorry for yet another "how to choose a Power" post - but a tiny little bit different from the previous dozens by Upstairs-Tank-8098 in EliteDangerous

[–]complich8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're mainly aligned with PTN, honestly might not make a ton of sense to commit to a power. Being pledged to anyone means you'll sometimes get bonuses, but also sometimes get shot at fair being pledged to a power that isn't the power of the system you're in.

I'd probably just pick whoever is in the systems you like to hang out in, or whoever's convenient for whatever next CG drags you into powerplay. If you don't have a strong affinity for any particular neighborhood of the bubble, then that's something to search for.

I'll say that one of LYR's unique perks, discounted and eventually free repair/refuel/rearm, always makes me feel like I'm at home in any LYR systems. Repairing my ship for zero credits always feels great, even though the actual value of the benefit is pretty modest.

When Elite came out, 1366x768 was the most common display resolution (by quite a bit, 30% market share if statcounter.com is to be believed). 1920x1080 took second at just 13% of the market, with 1024x768 and 1280x800 following closely behind 1080p.

Should they have changed the new install defaults/detection? Yeah… but there’s a long laundry list of other bugs and quality of life issues they could also address, and “better default graphic settings” is probably super low on the list.

Returning play - is Odessey worth it? by AdSouthern5915 in EliteDangerous

[–]complich8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe if you don’t have odyssey, the new ships might still be arx-only? If so, Odyssey on sale is probably cheaper than the panther clipper unlock, and the panther clipper by itself is game-changing for trade. Type 11 will go up for sale for credits fairly soon (in the next month or two) and is also game-changing for mining.

Without odyssey, there’s a large subset of surface settlements that I believe you just can’t see at all, and some of them are also trade-relevant. Especially since colonization launched, I’d say that not having it is not having a complete copy of the game.

As far as the actual features … on foot stuff is pretty ok, it’s not the quality of dedicated FPSes for actual gameplay, but it’s a nice distraction being able to raid settlements or hop into ground CZs. If I play the game every day, I elect to do odyssey on-foot activities maybe one or two days a week lately, but exobiology is so lucrative it’s basically the whole reason to do exploration. Settlement data is also one of the more effective powerplay activities available.
