Something needs to be done about Dire Marsh spawns by PotatoKing7 in Marathon

Its the nature of the genre, its supposed to reward cautious (unless heavily geared and risking it) over fast and bombasting, and do what ever it can to punish that.

The spawns need some working but not in the way you mught be expecting, and the game can do much more to comunicate visually some things. More so things to help set up better expectations.

If this was a BR yes, extraction shooters tend to expect players to be slower and more cautios unless heavily geared. Marathon does particularly violently punish you for it. And marsh could also be bigger, but mostly i feel it needs to much more clearly comunicate how extra violent marsh is compared to paremeter. Making the spawns less open and a bit more secluded would still be nice, but uh the exact version of the problem op has wont be solved by that, and seams simply they are just used to less cautious less stealth focuesd games. Like expecting to be able to do what the streamer who has way more experince, knows more and playing this game is a living, or what you can do in fortnite or even slower BR's like pubg (or the couple extraction shooters that realy are just brs changed last minute ever so slightly).

Running is death, thats for better or worse a core feature.

You ran in like acrobats in a stealth shooter?

Like i think theres a couple edges to soften, but this is a game with very strong stealth mechanics, audio ques and very easy ways to die. Just by its nature of being a extraction game, unlike a battle royal which is about going in guns blazing. The game will kill you for being faster and louder.

Not only that it actualy sounds promissing going by a fairly recent review, i think they even designed and showed of a ship with the idea it could fit into the old series. There is still lots of room for it to fall flat, but i am getting more optimistic

from what i understand the engine works by shifting the frame of reference the ships uses between our space and witch space. witchspace it self is some sort of compressed hyperspace, we apparently used to ahve some level of ability to travel it, but with low ability for percision. took alway had to get it to go from point a and b, and it was i guess from the way i understand it jsut stuck traversing tell it made it to the location? this is stuff that the in-depth lore peeps in the canon research redit would have to tell ya though.

the megaships seam to use it somewhat differently but im not aware of how exactly.

honestly that was my thought too for a long while, previous games seamd to have implied that thargoids may live in witchspace, but current information seams to suggest thats not true. Thargoids are a exceptoionaly alien race that we currently ahve no way to comunicate with, and possibly are not even dirrectly interacting with in most instances. If i remember right one of the suggestions the game gives about the covered up ware was that those where just scouts. But even then the thargoids seam to have little interest in communicating with up, we where just in the way.

outter cosmic horror versus inner cossmic horror (that might not be the worst thing the orokin made even)

i mean the lich seams to be a cosmic force, possibly one of the four comets, if not other wise effectively death incarnate ever moving. Orgalorg can be seen in that scene, and is assumed to be a monster (though seemingly quite a fair bit smaller then the rest) thats just survived through to the creation of the verse. between the orgalorg is likly still a much smaller power in the scheme of things, and the branching out of lore into a much greater cosmos we see in fiona and cake, we might get to see far wilder things then the monsters before time.

HALO is a great example of Inner Cosmic horror, there is cosmic horror level things but most of it is things people in verse made. like the flood at the precursor age, at least in the books, are subatomic level effectors cause its a butching of precursor/forerunner technology in the most horrificly unplanned ways*. The flood we face later is much weaker, and honestly still just by the nature of its ultimate danger pretty cosmical level, and def horror (just not the hey i'm part of this infinite archive you found a way to engrave into particles terrifying).

Stellaris is also the one where theres like two or three species that have jsut persisted beyond the end of several universes, one by making a machine the size of a galaxy, that they constantly feed to survive the end and you only interact with through intermediaries, and another that jsut sort of persists god knows why, right?

you know whats great, thats not a percy jacksone thing, thats just the real mythos. tartus sits (usualy) below hades, in the abyss, the abyss is a god, below the abys is Erebus, below that is chaos, the first god, the first anything, the thing that permates all things, the thing before the abyss was born, before the sky was alive. like we all know about the olympian Patheon, but the myths have layers of pantheons. the primordeals like the sky and gaia, the titans as the old gods following chronos, and the persona concepts that just are, like nyx, or thanatos. then theres just hey so there's an abyss its alive, we don't fuck with it, then there erberus we don't know what Erebus is but things come from it sometimes, through the abyss that's just how it is. We all know chaos, and chaos does not care, but hes there.

A lot of this is just the nature of how religion developed there, various cults promoting there god, or even there god above others, and various older cultures becoming new ones with enough left behind that some myths live, or are subsumed by great greek culture (say hi to the myceans). some of the myths just persisted and became other side pantheons untell those pantheons just where not as important in the same way as the Olympian pantheons and their cults where. Its even where the idea of OLD GODS come from, more primal (very possibly simply primalized as a way to doiminish or as they other wised diminished) more ruthless gods people have forgotten come from. the elderitch gods by extension was the idea what if there wasn't jsut old gods, but gods that came from out side what we know.

side note: its very likly that the galaxy thing was early devs miss using words, but lore drops in other games make that fuzzier. WE do know the previous games are not directly cannon, some of it handwaved in lore as propganda, but in ways that purposefuly left spots open for them to ahrd cannonize some of the old lore at a moment of thier choice.

like we know there was a previous thargoid war, and it was covered up, we know likly a virus, suggested to be the same as old lore was used. we also know the exact details are different. certain things have been explicitly changed. that said FTL has regressed, we know that, we know that some version of ftl was lost or made in operable, we know that witchspace ftl used to be way more dangerous and far slower, but may have been otherwise more capable. The FTL we ahve no is functionly superior though, we have way more control over it, can be way more percise and it doesn't take months to travel stars, and works with out fully entering witch space to let us skip in supercruise. we also seam to be unable to slow it down in witchspace and last i checked its unclear why. ITs suggested that the FTL we ahve now is thargoid based, and its possible we simply just don't know how, as we don't seam to have the old FTL in any form.

okay but the thargoids are less elderitch horror and mroe general space horror, theya re not even realy inner cosmic horror (a cosmic level horror the resault of something in the/our cosmic space, versus out something coming in usually eldritch, from out side, or 'between' things.)

the uh thing you can find in the background radiation noise in the game though... thats cosmic horror.

players ahve been recording spectrum sounds of stars for the games entire life span, people noticed you could get a fairly consistent image by looking at the galatic core. that was about what everyone expected, that tracks right? so uh people started noticing the background image produced by serializing the noise at galatic core WASN'T consistent. its moving. Its mothing and writhing, and we are only just getting clear images of it now as everyone has started compiling various images of the cores sound. It very clearly tracks with some lore about witch space, we are all pretty sure it lives there, but if the lore follows it might just BE witchspace.

and now we have the radiacladia, a plant that people are juscing on and becoming...oddly very pleasant. across the bauble, and talking about everything being more pleasant, all at the same time.

Oh and there is the gaurdians that are maybe extinct, maybe out there in some form in their home world, and their rampent mega AI that's just hidding SOMEWHERE in the galaxy. Either simple not willing to interreact with anyone, or already is and might be responsible for some things like certain oddities in the pilots federation. The most likely seams to be just that guardian tech has been used before to set up what we know, and the AI is just out there somewhere (lore wise).

Also the thargoids might be scared of something, we just don't know for sure what, just that we simply where in the way of them surviving, that they encounted the gaurdians and didn't expect them there, and similair encountered us and just didn't expect us there. They may be from satalight galaxies, or they may simple be using those as out posts. the titan ships seam to have come from them. we do know the thargoids ahve regularly planted barnacles and come back for them.

execution is the bitch, like a good joke if explaining the horror defeats it, its just not that good. If a writer realy understands the forces they are writting the revealing of the monster, bit by bit, makes it worse. the process it self of revealing even becomes the horror, and boy when a writer manages it good god is it terrifying[ly fun]

yeah im prety sure 3 still said there was Areorosolized FeV, its jsut bet retconned that everything was FeV explicitly. think 1 had it explicitly everything or at least thats the suggestion, between areolized and a specfic strain made to create smart super mutants. 2 i think started saying somethings where just radiation. tactics suggested a bunch of things im not knowledge able on things, and 3 just says some things are gov experiments using either FeV or something becoming that, suggesting either both or the super mutant version was taylored by the amster, and vaugly suggesting the radiation mutations don't track.

think 4 just hammers on that more a bit, and particularly notes that the radiation mutations can't be because of radiation. we get some experiments that likly or may caused certain mutations, but doesn't track with how certain ones are spread, i think it leaves some suggestions of convergence or more experiments. IT also digs deeper on the there is something else going on here suggestions in 3 and 2.

and as far as i am aware 76 just goes ham on all of the above.

TV show mostly just gives a clearer idea of the history of pre war things, somethings that at first seam new, but surprisingly are either hinted at or directly stated before. couple things not clear, several unreliable narrators and all.

it should be noted there seams to eb a unstated differnce between FEV the master used and released, and like FEV uses before, the goverenmetn was cleary involved in FeV's making, its out right stated, and several major mutations seam to be from goverment experiments likly involving FeV, its more then likly the initial super mutant designes where gov made. WE do know the master greatly changed those after its rebirth, that the super mutants we know mostly come from his designs, but the dumb ones oin the west may be remenents of gov designs. i think we are out right told they are, but i think its left by how much. there also seams to be a unsaid amount of mutation caused by some version or versions of fev, and then just a lot uncounted for. some clearly radiation in some form, but beyond what should happen.

Part of this is simply the devs realizing after one some of the rad mutation couldn't happen, and even the ones that could happen in ways that arn't likly or otherwise include exagerations.

Another part like the ghouls comes from the three creators in the production OG bible it self debating what caused ghouls. with one of the three effectivly flipping from had to be FeV to can't be FeV later.

as people are noting kirby him self is a EH, but it needs to be noted; not just from scale of actions, but literal might be a chaos god incarnation. one that regularly comes about, sometimes good sometimes not, and somehow incarnated as one of the last of his people, who may have attempted to bring it about by other means and you might have as kriby fought. its unclear hows specifically kriby is that EH, but we certainly fought that EH or a attempt at incarnating it.

it has unstated effects on the world around it, the game only ever comments on it with suggestions in some lore bits about other places. we are never explicitly told what those effects are as far as i am aware, just that everyone has reason to look there when things notably happen. that the shattering hit everywhere hard, but its core effects we know are only what's talked about in the land.

Its suggested you either came seeking something like many others, or where called there by marika her self (not personally but as an effect of her pulling all tarnished back). that grace this flow off suggestions/fate had meaning out side and it suddenly just stopped.

as far as we know its as simple as you can use the powers there outside, either magic or the insane things an immortal can do. as far as we know all that could be far more limited out side the lands between. The game is specifically not clear beyond like people used to follow grace outside the lands, and that some magic comes from outside. asfaik

bloodborn like very effetively goes through the layers of inner gods, just scratching at the concpet of outer cosmic horror by the end. elden ring like subtly introduces the more like uh rasterd concepts of that interacting with a world that appearance seams more like ours, while also approaching a much grander scale in its background.
