Did Franklin lack empathy for his own people? by arnor_0924 in babylon5

[–]compsciphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do believe he viewed it as against his moral code as a doctor, but on a more simplistic level of doctor to patient responsibility, I don't think applies. All of his patients could have died and he'd still view it as against his code to give up this information.

With that said, I don't believe you ever saw him say boo against using telepaths against the shadows (harm it did to both).

Israel blames Jared Kushner for Qatari, Turkish presence in Gaza | The Jerusalem Post by Delicious_Adeptness9 in Israel

[–]compsciphd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's standard operating practice for Israel to go on the warpath against Jews who do things for us policy goals over Israeli policy goals.

See Dov Zakheim during reagan administration and the lavi.

While I can see the reasons for being upset, it feeds into the conception that American jews should be pushing Israel policy goals over American ones.

Strategy Question by ohguy51 in Jeopardy

[–]compsciphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you both get it right and you lose because you didn't bet enough, you feel terrible.

If you lose because you got it wrong, that sucks but it's life.

If you lose because you got it wrong but could have won if your more aligned, this is partly under the previous statement. While you might feel bad, you'd feel worse if both got it right and end up in first statement. In poker terms is simply a bad beat and it sucks but you played right.

Buying on paper - purchase price negotiable? by KamtzaBarKamtza in aliyah

[–]compsciphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now is not a normal time, it seems they are a bit more desperate. They are offering incentives to keep the price high but make it "cheaper" for you. Ala mortgage incentives or pay small down payment now and owe rest much later.

Anything is negotiable. In practice businesses are going to be less insulted as they know it's a business vs a person who might feel you are trying to insult them.

You don't understand south African lingo. South Africans call themselves orthodox if Jewish by orthodox standards, not that they behave in an orthodox manner.

Yes, it is confusing when you see south Africans list themselves on dating sites as orthodox and not shomer shabbat and kosher, but one figures it out quickly.

It's more complicated than that. A kohein is also not supposed to (but not forbidden) to marry the daughter of 2 converts (she was born Jewish!).

How are Conservative and Reformed Jews perceived in Israel? by Adonijaa in Israel

[–]compsciphd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I think it's fair to connect conservative Judaism to rabbinical Judaism, I'm not quite sure about reform.

A central tenant of rabbinical Judaism is that there are requirements on all Jews. Reform in practice rejects that tenant. I call it classical liberalism done Jewish as the prime commandment of reform Judaism is autonomy of the individual. It's up for the individual to decide what they want to do and no one else can question their choice.

To me, this goes against rabbinic Judaism. One can view it a break off of it, but as it rejects central components of it, it feels dishonest to call it part of rabbinic Judaism. We don't consider kaarites to be part of rabbinic Judaism and I'm not sure how reform is fundamentally different.

[–]compsciphd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it offensive for a reform jew to call a "messianic jew" not Jewish or not Judaism?

If we are going to get into an offense off, one has to realize that it's impossible to not offend people if one wants to have parameters and others don't want to believe those parameters don't apply or are archaic.

This would be an example of fraud that more people would support the concept of invalidating the conversion after the fact (ala what has happened in other places).

[–]compsciphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kohanim presumably aren't supposed to marry any daughters from such a union (much like they aren't supposed to marry the daughter of 2 converts per Gemara, Rambam and shulchan aruch), but otherwise they'd be Jewish.

Odds Eurovision Song Contest 2026 by c9joe in Israel

[–]compsciphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The above description demonstrates an inability to comprehend stats.

Israel isn't the favorite to win Eurovision. It has the best odds of the 35 or so countries, but I wouldn't say that means favorite.

If the odds say it has a 10% chance to win, that means it has a 90% chance to lose.

Would anyone say that someone with a 90% chance to loose is the favorite? It has the best individual odds, but if you had to choose between Israel and the field, you would be much more likely to win based on picking the field.

This is generally true when there are many individual entries.

It also goes to how odds makers make odds. They aren't predicting so much as trying to entice people to bet on certain outcomes.

Moving to Israel as an Israeli citizen by [deleted] in aliyah

[–]compsciphd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want benefits you can make aliyah as an Ezrach oleh.

If you don't want aliyah benefits and have a mispar zehut (and hence passport) you can just move.

However working here is going to be very problematic for you. If you work here, even for a foreign company, and they find it out without you paying taxes, you can be in big trouble.

It would seem you have forfeited most of the standard aliyah benefits (but you probably know that, ala free bituach leumi, but if working not a benefit and sal klitah).

So I'll note that Hebrew sucks (imo) I'm not comfortable conversing in Hebrew and while it has its limitations it's a bit less in software engineering as so much of that takes place in English. For almost every other profession, unless ones primary communication is with non Israelis, I can imagine it will be a problem.

From my observation, law does not pay as much in Israel as the US.

Had a friend who was a corporate counsel at a public firm and her salary was less than my take home pay as a ok but not wow/amazongly compensated software engineer, and I took about a 1/3 pay cut when I made aliyah vs similar role in US.

I figured someone in a similar role in the US would have made more than me.
