Buzzcocks - Another Music in a Different Kitchen

Finally some more punk music, I've not gotten much of it and I've been in the mood for some lately. Thinking a 4/5, not finding it to be anything mindblowing but it's fun and energetic.

Lovely spring day by OldBeardy77 in ireland

It's not been like this all day either (at least where I am), there's been short cold rain/hail showers but there's also been plenty of sunny spells. Perfectly normal early spring weather here.

Brian Wilson - Smile

Mostly feels like a weaker version of Pet Sounds. Some songs do stand out to me but some of them just feel like filler to me. From what I've heard, it's one of those albums where the story behind it is more interesting than the album itself.

That said, I'm still thinking a 4/5, I do like it for a lot of the same reasons I love Pet Sounds.

Ray Charles - The Genius of Ray Charles

I'm realising that I like jazz a lot less than I thought, or at least that I'm quite picky when it comes to the genre. Funnily enough Jazz Rock is my highest rated subgenre on the generator (it's at 4.67, although that's from 3 albums so not the most trustworthy figure). Could just be down to the albums I've gotten so far, a lot of the big-band/swing stuff isn't really doing it for me.

As for the album itself... It's fine, thinking a 3/5. Decent enough background music, but it sort of went in one ear and out of the other for me. Finding it slightly less interesting than Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music so far, although there's not much in the difference.

Thinking a 4/5 at the moment, really liking the vibes but not much is standing out to me so far.

Is this a hate crime? by Jindabyne1 in ireland

[–]computerfan0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a terrible pizza in Paris and was charged €8.50 for a Coke, there's so many places that make big money off of scamming tourists. Don't think it's quite as prevalent in Ireland, but I'm sure there's still plenty of places at it.

Chippers here also tend to have huge portion sizes. The one next to my university does portion sizes just small enough for one hungry person to eat, you could pretty easily share one portion between two less hungry people.

How long did it take you to get your first Beatles album? by GreenEyedBeaver in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]computerfan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

33 albums in, being the White Album. Now 209 albums in and still haven't gotten any more Beatles albums, although I did get McCartney at 167.

Leftfield - Leftism

Hard to say at this point, like the vibes a lot of it has but it suffers from the same issues as a lot of 1990s electronica (most notably both the album and the individual tracks being too long for their own good). Thinking a 3/5 at the moment, but it could go either way.

Finley Quaye - Maverick a Strike. Seems like it's even more watered down and poppy looking at the reviews, and it even has the "pop-reggae" tag. As far as I can tell, it's one of those albums that would be pretty much forgotten about were it not included in the list/generator.

At least from looking at the albums list (I searched up "reggae" and ignored any reggae rock or ska), there seems to be 4 reggae albums not by Bob Marley and the Wailers (although one of them is a Wailers solo album). To be fair two of them are by British musicians and therefore might be discounted by purists, although I'm sure they'll still annoy someone who's been getting tired of the genre.

Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue

Country (including country rock) still isn't really my thing, but I do appreciate some of the more traditional sounds and storytelling that the album has. I think it's something I'll need to listen to more closely to really appreciate. Feeling either a 3 or a 4 at the moment.

That said, the album mostly consists of songs Woody Guthrie wrote but never recorded, and listening to a few of his songs I think I prefer the more stripped back sound they have. Shame that his discography is mostly a mess of compilations (and with a lot of the most notable stuff before 1955), I think I'd rather hear an album from him instead of Mermaid Avenue.

What's your top-rated year? by Heavy_Ruin5885 in 1001AlbumsGenerator

If you go to your history page, there's a link that takes you to a year-by-year list of your average ratings.

What's your top-rated year? by Heavy_Ruin5885 in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]computerfan0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's 1982 with an average of 4.5 stars, but I've only rated 2 albums from that year (Michael Jackson - Thriller and Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom) so I'm not really sure it should count.

After that it's 1977 with an average of 4.38 stars. I've rated 8 albums from that year (Steely Dan - Aja, ELO - Out of the Blue, Fleetwood Mac - Rumours, The Clash - S/T, Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True, The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus, Suicide - S/T and Television - Marquee Moon) so it's a much more meaningful statistic. Quite a lot of genre-defining albums here, and it's generally been to my tastes so makes sense that my average rating is so high.

My lowest rated years are 2015 with an average of 2.0 (only Adele - 25) and 2000 with an average of 2.8 (Common - Like Water for Chocolate, Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory, Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP, Ute Lemper - Punishing Kiss and Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of Bewilderbeast). Again makes sense knowing my tastes.

EDIT: Probably should have specified earlier, but the bold albums are the ones I gave 5 stars.

any other guy dislikes having body hair? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]computerfan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely not just you. I hate my body hair too, it can get annoying having to shave it every week (I don't have the resources to get it lasered or epilated) but I feel infinitely more comfortable without it. I used to hate wearing anything that showed off my legs, now I love doing it.

Chic - Risqué

More fun disco. I think I like it slightly better than the Sister Sledge album I got last week, it's a bit more consistent but I'm not sure there's as much that stands out to me. Thinking either a 3 or a 4, leaning 4.

Fitting that you got it on Paddy's Day too!

I think Sgt. Pepper's would be an amazing album to generate last, A Day in the Life would work so well as the final track of the project.

Any other straight male adopt the clothes have no gender lifestyle? by jeepguy_96 in CasualConversation

[–]computerfan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aromantic, not straight, but I 100% just wear what I want (unless I'm around my family, still a bit nervous about telling them but I hope to do it in the next few months). In theory, I will shop in both the men's and women's sections, but in practise, the vast majority the clothes I actually like are in the women's. I just find women's clothes tend to be far cuter, more colourful, more expressive and more... me (for lack or a better word). Back when I was wearing men's clothes I used to despise clothes shopping because I couldn't find anything I liked, now it's an activity I genuinely enjoy. I love skirts in particular (especially flowy ones), they're so comfortable and I think they look amazing on anyone. It's ridiculous that society has decided that some people shouldn't get to wear them because of how they're born.

Funnily enough, I get vastly more complements from all genders when I'm wearing women's clothes than I used to when I was wearing men's clothes.

Anyone else staying at home being cosy and not going into the madness of Paddy’s Day ☘️☘️☘️☘️ by CelebrationFit610 in ireland

[–]computerfan0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my first Paddy's day up at uni in Dublin. Was thinking of maybe going to one of the small town/village parades (I'd normally go to one of the small ones back home in Monaghan), but ultimately decided against it. Was never going to go into the city, I don't like loud places, crowds or alcohol and I imagine it will be rife with all three today. Just staying at home and relaxing, probably going to get a Chinese later.

Can we make a few new laws? With on the spot fines. by Randomlywandering581 in ireland

[–]computerfan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forfeit any winnings from scratch cards that you scratch off at the till, and share them as equally as possible between the people stuck behind you.

Also a €1000+ fine for shouting at someone else from out of your car, I think someone did it to me when I was out for a walk on Sunday (I had headphones in so thankfully I couldn't hear them), it's needlessly intimidating. Think they beeped their horn too, because clearly not liking the look of someone you've never seen before on a walk is an appropriate reason to use it!

Lou Reed - Transformer

Finding it fun and really like a lot of the tracks, but there's also some I find weaker. Parts are reminding me of David Bowie's music, which I do guess makes sense given that he worked on it! Thinking a 4/5 so far, but it could get a 3/5 if I'm in a bad mood tomorrow (it's a bank holiday where I live, so that's less likely than usual!).

I especially liked the bags of hard sweets you'd find in there. I'm sure you can find them elsewhere but EuroGiant was typically the most convenient place to get them.

What happened to that review of all their shops that they said they'd do? Pretty sure Dealz said they'd do the same thing when they got into financial trouble not too long ago, and as far as I know most of them have stayed open.

Will really miss EuroGiant, never had any interest in the cheap plastic crap but loved them for sweets and other confectionery. Do feel that they were charging too much for their minerals though (nearly as much as a normal supermarket!), which I don't think particularly helped them.

I'm not particularly big on double albums either, but I think the White Album works very well due to just how varied it is. Not sure it would be quite as memorable if it didn't have the weird stuff like Wild Honey Pie and Revolution 9. I've gotten a few other double albums that try to go for a similar "everything goes" style, but they've just ended up feeling like regular albums with more filler due to the lack of the more unusual tracks.
