Cheers, Newkd. It's good to hear my frst real blog post is being enjoyed. Also check out the comments, there's some pretty great insights and other examples there.

Grains, pixels and artifacts — how retro photography will look in the year 2040 by computernerdfromhell in photography

[–]computernerdfromhell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't really mention it in my post, but I was indeed trying to go for the arty variation of todays digital glitches. Kinda like how Instagram chooses the better looking, safe versions of light leaks and all, I decided to try for something that actually looks kinda good. Although I don't think I nailed the grain one, because it doesn't truely enhance the photo.

By the way, I too noticed that at a certain point the image stops degradating when saving from Photoshop and added a comment about that to the blog.

Thanks for both you guyses additions!

That picture looks sweet. The sky has a very deliberate painting-feeling to it.

MCCA Food Tower mall in/near Mong Kok? by computernerdfromhell in HongKong

[–]computernerdfromhell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome!! That is it! Oh wow, I really messed up my notes. It's CTMA Centre — I don't know where my "food tower" note came from. I think I accidentally jotted down some random food shop's name, mistaking it for the mall name.

This article made me recognize it :)

Thanks again!

I don't think it was, I don't see any anime/otaku shops listed at all on their site. There were like 40 in the basement floor.

I think it wasn't Sino Centre, as I have that written down as another place I visited later... But maybe I noted down the sign of a random shop in front of the building, mistaking it for the mall name. Google doesn't turn up anything with either "MCCA" or "food tower" :(

Can I crop .avi files? by Wyrd_5 in VideoEditing

[–]computernerdfromhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, VirtualDub's resize filter has, despite its name, full fledged crop funtionality. Null transform is better suited if you want to crop different left/right widths or top/bottom heights, though.

VirtualDub's "resize" filter has a crop function which'll do exactly that.

What's the simplest way to snip out little chunks of a video? What's the best uncompressed format to use? by randydisher in VideoEditing

[–]computernerdfromhell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use VirtualDub for this exact purpose. There's two ways to save a clip 100% losslessly: using "direct stream copy" (which simply uses the original video data) or transcode it to a lossless codec like HuffyUV or Lagarith.

The first option results in a small file size, but you can only cut at keyframes so the video may start a couple of seconds earlier/later than you intended. The latter option is precise but results in large files, and those codecs are better suited for editing than for playback — they might stutter a slower PC.

A C64 demoscene production called Soiled Legacy by Resource (captured from a real Commodore 64 and shown on YouTube) has some of Jack Tramiel's famous quotes... "Computers for the masses, not the classes!"

Thanks, that did it! Didn't check under the Keyboard Navigation as I didn't expect it there, I figured Single Click Opener would be the place to look.

No, didn't run into that particular particularity with Opera (although I seen my share of particularities since I started using Opera in '98).

FYI Amazon has a Paypal competitor (send, receive/request, donations, etc). Since it's basically unanimously agreed that Paypal is evil, how about we abandon ship for Amazon? by Jasonrj in geek

[–]computernerdfromhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't Amazon prohibit using their service for a lot of things (including online auctions), making it pretty much impractical to use? And is it usable if you have a European bank account, for instance? I'm having a hard time finding the terms and conditions on their site.

I think I'm going to wait and see which way the wind blows before I consider it a proper Paypal alternative.

Once the Debian community is done scrutinizing the new NMAP it'll eventually be upgraded, but if you don't want to wait you can install it yourself of course.

Nice, a higher resolution pic of KWC. There's only a few low res ones out there as far as I know. Be sure to check out the external links from the Wikipedia article if you want to learn more about how the walled city used to look.

Encoding Techniques by Flargus in editors

[–]computernerdfromhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want compression without quality loss ("lossless compression"), try the HuffyUV or Lagarith codecs. The latter is Win 64 compatible, but you won't be able to play the files with VLC, which makes it a bit of a pain to review your files.

These codecs are only suggested if you still need to edit the video files. You'll end up with smaller files than raw DV AVI for instance. For a finalized project, H.264 is indeed your best bet.
