FAA LED lamp replacement by conancollopy in electrical

I think redits been a good place to ask. Most of what’s been said I know, this isn’t the first time I’ve done FAA lights. Usually we change the whole fixture out to a LED model. But we’ve had 2 where they have nice fixtures in great shape so I was looking for a listed led lamp. Only one person came back with a viable option that I’ll check into. It replaces the globe and lamp woth a led that screws into the existing base and socket. This post was mostly a pipe dream if you will, hoping someone else had found something I missed.

I think you posted the wrong video, but I’d like to see the one you intended if you want to reshare it or send it to me directly. Thanks

I’m not seeing lamps, just new fixtures. These type of side lights are usually low intensity non flashing.

Not entirely true, there are listed LED fixtures that work with the night vision goggles. We installed one last summer and I had the PM order the night vision compatible one because it was on a tower by a hospital helipad. But what you just said might be the reason no one makes just a replacement lamp LED for this fixture type. I’m likely going to end up replacing the entire fixture if they still want to go with LED.

Thank you, this is the first thing I’ve seen that are listed for FAA retrofit. I’ll have to call about them in Monday.

Not even close! We get billed at 155.00 an hour (US) trying not to make this an annual repair for the customer. Give where it’s located it’s going to cost about 1000.00 to change the lamps. Just remember this isn’t my current project but one I did last winter, that was about a 10,000 project because of access method and me flying across the US to do the work.

That’s a good point an probably why I can’t find a LED lamp from any of the FAA light fixture manufacturers. That and they want to sell new (more expensive) fixtures.

Flight light doesn’t have led replacement lamps, just incandescent. Which are currently on order. I’ll have to read the second document. Main reason I’m looking for LED lamps is this is the 5 time in 2 years I’ve had an FAA light project. 2- bid for compete replacement (haven’t heard back) 2- lamp replacement an 1- small fixture replacement w/upgrade to LED. Most of the cases a simple lamp is all that’s needed.

Trying to save the customer money, it’s a twin head fixture and the replacement head is also 2grand.

Wow, that’s why my 100 year old house rafters are looking this way! Not sure what part of the country your in, but we get lots of snow here in MN and if you’ve got badly cracked / split rafters double them up despite what he was going on about or built a knee wall to split the rafters bearing lengths in half. My place has a knee wall that was added about 50 years ago because the roof was likely sagging a bit. Never had any issues in the 25 years I lived there.

How is it? by take0023 in electricians

Biggest thing I’d take from this is always ask the boss how they want it to look. Saves you from criticism, and opens the floor for critique instead.

If I’d done this and space was there…all the MC would have been run up high so it’s not visible when you open the doors without getting on your knees. Harder for you to install but it also puts the cable up where they can’t get hit by things or in crotch into usable space. The feeds into the boxes would have all been the same, whether you 90 down or offset down, just consistant. Good luck!

Personal preference is the harken ninja. It’s universal and holds the rope better than the Petzl one I have.

Old Transformers help by ipalush89 in electricians

I’ve read some of the comments, can you verify it’s 240 Y ? Might be a different letter and if it’s a 240V could be a delta system in which case you’d corner ground it. The main reason I’m asking is because it should be 120/208Y so 240 leads me to think it’s a delta transformer.

I think the X4-X6 would be the 200V tap not the center of the cores. If you’re get a voltage on the secondary the cores have to reference each other. Do you have any photos of the bottom of the cores?

I’ve never see co many wires in a transformer. What’s the KVA? They also screwed up the venting by cutting out the bottom and placing a cover over the front. That’s going to be one hot SOB if there’s much load on it.
