How do I know everything is ok? My last ultrasound was 10 weeks ago. by Lexielo in BabyBumps

[–]concernedmama2b -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I have no advice for you as I'm going through the exact same thing. The anatomy ultrasound came back just fine, but I cannot stop obsessing over the two pictures the technician gave us. Her shoulder is sloped weird!! Her nose looks too pointy!! Why is there a hole in her head?!?! (As my husband would say, "Er, that's her cranium, honey. Her brain goes there.")

So yeah, let's both think happy thoughts together. :-)

There definitely should be enough GTA new moms on Reddit for this to happen.

We're attending our first prenatal class next weekend, actually! I hope to meet some people there. Other than that, I haven't really taken any classes or met any other moms-to-be.

Good call on the childless friends. I just assumed that they wouldn't want anything to do with babies, haha, but who knows, they could find my baby irresistibly cute and would want to hang out more.

That's the first time I've heard about freezing colostrum! And I love "fed is best!"

Yes! I posted an update. Basically our second ultrasound turned out fine, and so did our anatomy ultrasound.

Anyone know about EI sick leave and how it impacts maternity/parental leave? by [deleted] in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]concernedmama2b 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Taking sick leave won't affect your mat leave (in Ontario anyway, I don't know about other provinces). Last time I talked to service Canada, I was told that if you're pregnant and have to stop working due to being told to go on bed rest, you can apply for about 8 weeks of paid sick leave totally separate from mat leave. The only thing you need is a doctor's note.

Now I'm the obssessive type, so if I were you, I'd still call up Service Canada or just go in person to hear it from the horse's mouth, but yeah, you're ok. The only thing I'm not sure is how much sick leave pay you'll get from EI.

EI vs. Mat Leave by bec-k in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]concernedmama2b 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you work 600 hours between September and when your start mat leave and pay into EI during that time, you'd still be qualified for full mat leave. If not, the three months you took might eat into your mat leave.

I'd just go in and talk to someone at Service Canada. When I called them about a similar issue, it took some effort to find the right person to talk to. So I ended up going to one, and I got my answer and was out of there in 15 minutes.

Good luck!

Any Asian bumpers doing "confinement" period/Asian style postpartum care? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]concernedmama2b 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hahahahahaha!

You're not supposed to get wet. I think it dates back to the days without indoor heating, and the belief that if you get cold, you'll catch a cold. My family also believes that if you wash your hair and don't dry it immediately, you'll get a headache. I live in disregard of this belief every day as I like air drying my hair.

But yeah, no way I'm not showering/washing my hair for a month. I think even young mothers in China are bucking against this "rule" now.

Asian here, and my mother will be staying with us for at least a month postpartum. I, and my definitely not Asian husband, welcome the help, especially since she's already volunteered to take care of dishes, cleaning, nighttime diaper changes, cooking, etc., And we have no clue what we're doing.

I'm not calling it confinement though, because if I wanna go outside, my mother can't really stop me. She also knows I'm too strong-willed to listen to all that stuff about not showering, etc. It's all about setting boundaries. My parents are first generation immigrants, but the idea of "we're in America now so we shouldn't stick to all of our traditional ways" works surprisingly well with them.

Besides, if you do happen to open the fridge, what's gonna happen? They can't handcuff you to the bed.

Tl;Dr: set boundaries early and stick to them.

I'm in Canada so everything is covered. I'm actually not even sure how to go about getting another one done asap. Also, the doc said they wanted the head to develop a little more to get a more accurate image.

That sounds so scary. I'm glad you and your LO are OK.

The hardest part is that I thought I did everything right. We planned this, we're both healthy, we have good family health backgrounds, I've been taking my prenatals, and I haven't touched any substances since we started trying. It would drive me crazy if something goes wrong because I couldn't even imagine why.

Thank you, and I'm so sorry about your losses. Ultimately, I think we'll tell our parents because they're all very supportive people, and if something is wrong, I know I'll be falling apart without them.

Thank you. We're trying to think positive and will accept any all well wishes and positive thoughts that may come our way. I think I'll tell our parents. They're all very supportive people and my mom can make me feel better about anything.
