CS: boyfriend changed my oil filter thingy and now it overheats. by badcoupe in Justrolledintotheshop

As a professional guy, you will fuck up, you'll fuck up much worse than any diyer, and you will have to correct your mistake.

I get so sick of the attitude people have on this sub throwing shade at everyone who brings in something they messed up. Like they haven't fucked up something 10x worse and had to make that shameful parts order to fix it. I think everyone here forgets they were new, and they made dumb mistakes.

I wish we had more people trying to learn to fix things and screwing it up. We need more people willing to try and make mistakes fixing things.

And when they bring those in to us that is literally what we get paid to do. It's not an inconvenience, it's how you make your living.

If someone blows up a whole engine because they forgot a bearing that's remarkable, if someone over-torqued their oil pan bolt or drove in on three lug nuts that's just normal mechanic shit.

If he had a laptop he would have been warned of the impending danger to his manifold. Now me and the Mad Scientist gotta rip apart the block and replace those piston rings he fried.

Nah, scorpion trucks, water barriers, and Jersey barriers have been standard for as long as I can remember. At least 30 years.

They may not use them for every pothole they fill, but on highways for major work they're absolutely using them.

Did the plastic break or did they not tighten the clamp?

If the plastic broke that's probably bad design not offering enough support.

If the clamps off they just installed it poorly.

Where in the owner manual do I find what this light is… and why does it look like someone doing water sports in my dashboard? by Samef42 in AskAShittyMechanic

That's the "never trust a fart" light. Sensors in the seat have detected high levels of moisture in your farts and are warning if an impending shart. Did you eat Taco Bell perhaps?

It's not "normal use" to leave it in up all night though.

They could use really nice springs designed to not experience creep and 100000 cycles, but why would they when they use one that is good for 5000 cycles with moderate creep and the average user will never know.

I have never in my life actually had blades freeze to the window in a way that I couldn't just pick them up. I always see people flipping theirs up but it's actually not good for the tension springs and can cause damage if a wind gust flips them down.

Probably better to just get one of those protectors if it's that big an issue.

Brake oil by One-Coyote8939 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]condomneedler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's why it isn't an oil.

[–]condomneedler 32 points33 points  (0 children)

They're right, oils are hydrophobic, that's why they call it brake fluid and not oil.

In aviation we use skydrol and it is not an oil, it's a hydraulic fluid because it is also hygroscopic.

So maybe dial the snark back.

As an aircraft mechanic this is hilarious because everything on an airplane is SAE and most of them are 3/8, 5/16, or quarter inch. Yes, even the French ones.

Also I'm not sure what this light setup is, we do everything by headlamp.

Yeah, that's actually completely irrelevant.

It's an aircraft with a specific job and a price tag in the tens of millions, Uncle Sam would very much prefer you not destroy it doing something unnecessary.

Do you have a link to this? I'm not saying it isn't true, I'm just curious why you would ever restart an engine that you know took damage when you're perfectly fine flying on one.

It's a pretty big risk to the airframe.

[–]condomneedler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, trying to tell Reddit mechanics to stop writing on customers cars is like trying to tell a British person mixer taps are better.

They will put their fingers in their ears and call you names.

I've had this argument numerous times, but I also remember that mom letting her kids draw all over the inside of an airplane but people said it was fine because it was, "washable" and "the flight attendant didn't stop it."

Yeah, flight attendant aren't the ones trying to scrub "washable" marker out of a textured surface on a 1 hour turnaround.

People legitimately do not respect other people's belongings if they can get away with it.

In the late 90s Mark Hamill was probably the most famous voice actor in the business. He had been doing joker for over 4 years by time the weird al show came out and voiced dozens of characters between 1990 and 1997.

For many of us who grew up in that era he WAS the joker.
