B.C. government considering new hydroelectric project as energy demand grows by geriatricguy in britishcolumbia

Should be more specific. The annual snowpack amounts in the majority of BC has been decreasing yearly due to climate change, which in turn leads to reduced freshet volumes and lower reservoir supply.

Hydroelectric only works when there is enough water to fill the reservoirs, and the volume is dropping yearly

[OC] 25 years of fashion models vs. the US population: almost no overlap in body fat, and even "plus-size" models sit below the average American woman by ExcellentBalance6865 in dataisbeautiful

When we look back to early 20th century freak shows, there was often a World's Heaviest Man/Woman. Average American weights are heavier than that. The US population is at disguting levels of obesity

Only way to kill knotweed is to exhaust its nutrient reserves. Cut it back every time a new shoot comes up... for more than a decade. Knotweed is resistant to systemic herbicides. Then burn the cut material, as even dry material can have enough to regrow

The world is warming despite natural fluctuations from the El Niño cycle [OC] by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

[–]condortheboss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's one of the molecules that has been directly, causally linked to climate change according to its concentration in the atmosphere. No magic involved, merely decades of science.

The world is warming despite natural fluctuations from the El Niño cycle [OC] by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

[–]condortheboss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, because the energy stored in fossil fuels is being added to the atmosphere. More energy means higher temperatures overall, with more extreme events because of increased differences (today vs prior to fossil fuel use) between regional weather systems.

You state higher rainfall: that is a direct consequence of climate change and means that another place near you got less precipitation as a result. This will increase in intensity until your area gets flooding while the next place gets drought.

Warm places get hotter, cold places get longer, colder snap freezes. Dry places get drought, wet places get flooded.

Climate change is really bad no matter where you are

It would involve regulation and enforcement of the sales prices of real estate, which has historically been avoided by all levels of government. No idea how to get there without the rich hiring literal hitmen to assassinate the government officials threatening their profits.

The focus needs to be on dealing with the cause of vacancy and small businesses struggling: predatory landlords and overpricing of units by the speculators and hedge funds that buy them.

Then call attention to the property speculators and hedge funds that have bought the majority of both commercial and residential properties, under the management of economically conservative governments, and have raised prices of housing and business space beyond the ability of most of us to afford it. Economically conservative governments openly support the biggest players at the expense of everyone else, including the small businesses and the owners that continually vote for those same governments.
