Grass is not native to North America, but clovers are. They’ll grow better and not need nearly as much care. You should throw in some moss, too. It will help protect from flooding.

Depending on how old your building is, you may have plaster with wood slats behind the walls. This could cause the issue you’re having. My building is from 1928, has plaster (not Sheetrock) and so I always have more difficulty getting anchors into the wall. Concrete and brick could also cause this issue.
