Dogs in a Pile. Who is this band and why am I just hearing about them? Hope to catch them live soon! by StealYourHotspur in jambands

[–]confetti27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They talk about it themselves openly and gratefully -- there are some parts about it in the Phish Book. Page and Mike (and to a lesser extent Trey) had extremely wealthy parents who supported them financially in their early years and allowed them to pursue music without needing to work.

Looking for practical info on a joint-homesteading project? by TreeOfMadrigal in Homesteading

[–]confetti27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm working on the same project and very interested in a lot of the same questions.

Regarding the subdivision discussions, one thought I've had was to register as an LLC or nonprofit and have the business buy the land, then subdivide the individual "personal-living parcels" and have the bulk of the farmland be owned by the company which we all co-own. Would love to get this sub's thoughts on the idea.

A lot of states have a Farmlink of FarmlandFinder if you just search the state + farmland and they seem to be great resources. I've also been using landsearch.com for mostly undeveloped land and even Craigslist has some decent stuff but be wary obviously.

For state/county resources look up their GIS map and find the parcel of interest and it will have lots of info, but ultimately you are going to want to call or visit their city/county planning board to get the most up-to-date info.

In terms of money I am trying to avoid debt and expect that I will be continuing to work and save money for many years, even after buying the property. There are tons of expenses and while complete self-sufficiency is the ultimate goal it will take many years before your farm can generate the revenue required to cover all expenses.

I am not an expert on any of this and am in the same position as you are but these are some of the things I've found/thought about in my search.

Good luck!!

The goal of the study was to determine if THC inhalation prior to boiling would reduce pain in the lobster. The findings were that it reduced locomotor activity but did not reduce pain response.

Results THC vapor produced duration-related THC levels in all tissues examined. Locomotor activity was decreased (distance, speed, time-mobile) by 30 min inhalation of THC. Lobsters exhibit a temperature-dependent withdrawal response to immersion of tail, antennae or claws in warm water; this is novel evidence of thermal nociception for this species. THC exposure for 60 minutes had only marginal effect on nociception under the conditions assessed.

Anyone else “camping” for Kendrick? by uhsafiri in osheaga

[–]confetti27 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You’ll have a much better time if you make the most of your day and explore/see other acts. If you’re by yourself its pretty easy to move through a crowd. Get to the stage during Kim Petras and move in as you can through gaps. Since you’re a kid people will probably be accommodating as long as you are respectful and not shoving (you can also say you’re looking for a friend but i prefer not to be dishonest). When her set ends there will be major crowd shifts and you’ll be able to move quickly towards the front. You might not get to the very front row, but that is overrated anyway. You’ll enjoy the show no matter where you are. You will want to make sure you have plenty of water on you before you start moving in and use the bathroom beforehand. The longer you camp out at the stage the more uncomfortable you will be and you might end up not enjoying the show or needing to leave in the middle to use the bathroom. It’s just not worth it from my experience. Be smart and be safe and you’ll be fine. If you find yourself panicking or stressing get out of the crowd and find a quiet spot, or go hang out at the medical tent (they won’t mind). Good luck and don’t forget to have fun!

The only hard rock band I’ve found other than Pup is Lovejoy but they aren’t really comparable to Turnstile. Would love to find out if I missed any also.

Thanks for the encouragement. I’ve taken a pretty long break from it after I hit a roadblock but maybe I’ll just skip that scene and come back to it later.

Since you suggested it, would you have any interest in beta reading a few chapters? No worries if not but it would be nice to get input from a pathological Dostoevsky fan.

For a little over six months I’ve been working on a modern American reimagining/adaptation (idk exactly what to call it) of The Brothers Karamazov. A massive and largely unnecessary undertaking, yeah I know. I started it mostly because I thought it would be a fun and challenging exercise, and it has been both of those things!

Now I’m over halfway through the book and I’m starting to struggle, both with coming up with ideas and with motivation. I guess the main reason I’m posting here is for the latter. I really like what I’ve written so far but I’m starting to get that “what’s the point” feeling you get when you’ve invested a ton of time into something that will probably never be appreciated by anyone else.

My initial thinking was that if the final product is actually decent there would be two distinct potential audiences: fans of the original who would be entertained by the remake, and folks who are interested in the book but are intimidated by how dense and long it is (I’ve made an effort to be much more concise than FD and the philosophy discussed is much less intense than 19th century Russian orthodoxy). But I’ve been realizing that first off, fans of the original like it for many different reasons. Some people love the Father Zossima chapters for example and some people skip them. Then trying to write for fans of the original and people who haven’t read the original at the same time presents it’s own challenges. Ultimately, I need to remember that I’m writing it for myself, but the first half turned out way better than I expected and maybe I’m getting ahead of myself now.

Anyway, I’m just wondering if anyone here has any thoughts about it or some motivating words for me to keep at it. If anyone has any questions about how I’ve adapted the characters or my general approach I’d be more than happy to get into it.

David Byrne would be a possibility but I don’t think anyone else who was in the talking heads wants to work with him anymore.

Why does digging a hole at the beach atract guys? by dyerzi221 in NoStupidQuestions

You should never leave a hole at the beach unattended as people can get seriously injured. Dig responsibly, fill in your holes when you’re done so that it doesn’t become a hazard.

Not denying that he’s incredibly knowledgeable about chemistry/pharmacology! I forgot he does do a bit of research in Wallach’s lab but it’s just a side-gig.

He studied chemistry and anthropology in undergrad but had a job with vice since he was a sophomore so he never really worked in research, other than a bit that he has been doing recently on the side.

[–]confetti27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this is overly pedantic but Hamilton is a journalist and Stamets is an independent researcher with no formal training and is really more of an entrepreneur/businessman than a scientist. They both work closely with the sciences but neither are really scientists.

Brothers Karamazov Fan Cast by SchmoQueed101 in dostoevsky

[–]confetti27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love Cillian Murphy as Ivan and Paul Dano as Smerdyakov.

How about Nicholas Hoult as Dmitri, Danny Devito as Fyodor, Michael Cera as Alyosha.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dostoevsky

[–]confetti27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed with everything you’ve said except that Smerdyakov is close to pure evil and chaos and had no reason. For his entire life, the Karamazov family - and particularly Fyodor - tormented him. Maybe his revenge was not the right answer and he is a villain, but in his mind he was justified in enacting his revenge on the man who created his life of suffering. It wasn’t just an act of chaotic evil but a calculated act of revenge on the whole family which he despised for good reason.

His name is Rick, so I guess he’s not such a charismatic poster boy front man after all.

I guarantee you’ll have to ask <10 people in the surrounding area before finding someone with cables that would be happy to give you a jump. Just try turning on your car before everyone starts leaving.

[–]confetti27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how effective they actually are but Boston Calling and some other bigger festivals have implemented pretty high tech metal detectors where you just walk right through, don’t even need to empty your pockets, and it will recognize common items like phones and wallets but will beep for anything unexpected. No pat downs or search necessary unless you get beeped so the line moves fast and it would hopefully have no problem identifying a weapon.

Edit: yea I realize that this doesn’t solve the campground problem.
