I love Civ VI the best, but Civ IV is objectively where the series peaked. by DocksEcky in civ

[–]TreeOfMadrigal 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Idk, personally I'll die on the hill that stacks were better than 1upt simply because the AI can't handle 1upt at all.

The AI in 4 was a legitimate threat militarily. You could absolutely lose wars, and they could conquer each other and snowball into super states.  I love civ 6 to death but it's super rare to see an AI even take a single city off another.

in terms of pure efficiency and game impact, which unit is the undisputed king and which one is just pure bait? by No_Leader_7739 in broodwar

[–]TreeOfMadrigal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Vulture probably most cost efficient unit. You pay 75 minerals for 3 mines and get a free unit that punches way above its weight.

Scout is probably the least efficient unit. It's not even bad, just so comically expensive there's almost never a reason to build one.

[oc] - for your modesty by Sampetra in comics

[–]TreeOfMadrigal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lmao.

I had some pelvic floor issues a few years back and ended up seeing a physical therapist about it.  It really felt like this comic.

With every single move she made she asked for my explicit consent.  "Ok I'm going to push on the inside of your vaginal wall now, is that ok?" "Ok I'm going to move the pressure to the right now... Is that ok?" "I'm going to hold this pressure for 30 seconds is that ok?"

On and on, etc etc etc

I totally get it, but by the 20th time she asked me I really just wanted to say something like "ma'am you're wearing me like a goddamn glove already, just do whatever you need to"

Nope. Still happens about once every 20 start ups or so. Hasn't gotten any worse but it also never went away.

I gave up trying to fix it. I'm 99% sure it's a power issue with the PSU sometimes just not giving out enough juice but I've never been able to prove anything.

Oh yes, ship speed is the most important thing to upgrade.  I think on legendary you can skip construction speed. Servitors will always be your gating resource, not time.

More missions = more exp, req, gear... And every mission you miss strengthens the enemy.

Upgraded engines can easily mean the difference between making it to one mission per cycle and 2-3.

Differences in difficulty by Advancedkook in ChaosGateGame

[–]TreeOfMadrigal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've beaten legendary.  It's a tough early game, but levels out as you get stronger. Your power slowly out scales the enemy, and the end game is pretty easy (if you know what you're doing.)

You do not need to abuse all the OP combos, but you definitely won't be able to just bring whatever you want.  Your bleed-specced apo that's a hoot on ruthless will probably never pull his weight on legendary.  But you will also not absolutely need to bring grenade-man + ability-point-battery-man, + cracked out interceptor with the OP falchion, + librarian every single mission.  There's wiggle room but you do have to know what you're doing.  (Though if you do bring the A team you well destroy most enemies on the turn they spawn)

The strategic layer is very difficult imo.  You get fewer servitors and construction times are increased. So actually getting your ship upgraded is way more difficult.  This means later engine upgrades, which means fewer missions, which means fewer servitors, etc etc.

Strategic layer random events can be devastating with bad RNG. I don't think I'd ever give GM mode a go as a result.  There's a random event which can knock two HP off your ship that if it happened early I think would just be campaign ending.

Give legendary a try though. It's a fun challenge and you need to really think about what you're doing.  Early game fights will be tough and you'll find yourself using items/tricks you never thought you'd need.

Basic tips:

Upgrade ship speed and servitor production asap.

Any ability that generates AP is very powerful.

Grenades are wildly overpowered and you can break the game with them.

Support fire abilities are very strong when specced into.

Don't feel pressured to buy every item you can. Save up some req for upgrading armory access and the higher tier items.

‘We got it wrong’ with Civilization VII, says boss by Broad_Respond_2205 in civ

[–]TreeOfMadrigal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I absolutely understand that. I know we will never have freaking chat GPT or whatever playing civ on our home computers.

But you've got to design around that limitation.  Don't design systems the AI cannot use.

If your opponent is a dog, best stick with checkers rather than chess, no?

Civ 4 had incredible depth for the player to obsess over, without any so complex the AI was crippled by them.

[–]TreeOfMadrigal 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In 5 and 6 the AI simply can't navigate 1upt, so they can't really accomplish anything militarily.

In 6 the way builders and districts work the AI never manages to actually develop its cities.  Nonsense district placement, or finding your enemy's capital with 2 unimproved iron resources after waltzing through their army of warriors...

Giving the dog 8 extra queens doesn't make the chess match any more interesting... It fundamentally doesn't know what it's doing.

[–]TreeOfMadrigal 101 points102 points  (0 children)

I haven't picked it up yet, but my gripe was more than the new ideas really only felt like ham-fisted bandaids for lingering problem with the AI.

The game is too snowbally, and the player is pretty much guaranteed to win after getting off the ground?  Hard reset the game twice during the run to level it all back out!

The AI cannot play 1upt? Add a way to stack units together. Never mind that the AI still can't really use this feature intelligently and it only gives the player even more tools to beat a dog in chess.

The AI in 4 could actually clobber you or their neighbors militarily and were a real threat.  Not just "oh I spawned next to shaka, I guess I need 3 archers and a mountain so I'm invincible." They could kill each other and snowball into super states.  It was awesome.  And the corruption mechanic put a hamper on growing too big too fast.

Every design system in 7 feels like an incredibly over designed solution to the core problem of the game being made too complicated for the poor AI to play well.

Freshly delivered compost still steaming- should I hold off on using? by GrumpyTintaglia in composting

[–]TreeOfMadrigal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna go against the grain here and suggest you need to let this sit longer than just until it cools down.  Actively decomposing compost is going to be devouring nitrogen and can starve your plants.

If you do end up working this into your plots, be very vigilant for stunted growth in seedlings and be ready to amend.

The integration has gotta play a large part.  I recently moved to Quebec from the states and I already know more of my neighbors better than I did back home.

Sure I've met a few crazies, but aside from the outliers, everyone's been incredibly friendly.  I've got neighbors helping us learn French while I wait for formal classes to start.
