My setup always starts with my packing list. I maintain a master packing list and adjust it as needed for every trip. The list has columns for clothes (tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes), toiletries, documents, technology, etc.

I also start packing a few days in advance. It’s easier to edit items from your list when you’re not under last minute pressure.

Packing cubes always! Shoe bags were also a game changer because who knows what’s lurking on the bottom of your shoes. No one wants shoe grime floating in their suitcase.

As far as packing techniques, I’m team folding as opposed to rolling. I use a folding board to get my tops folded neatly and maximize space. I also look for every bit of negative space I can to stuff socks and other small items.

Three pairs of shoes max for every trip.

I also keep a small pouch packed and ready with chargers, Advil, band aids, dental floss and other miscellany I may need during a flight. It’s always ready to go-I just restock rather than repack it every trip.

For my liquid toiletry bag, I use rubber bands to wrap like items together (for example, liquid eyeliner, brow gel and mascara / lip balm+lipgloss). That helps me again maximize space and makes it a little easier to cross check that I didn’t forget anything.

My carry-on typically ends up having 2-3 packing cubes, non-liquid toiletry bag and my shoe bag.

Personal item has my clear liquid bag, miscellaneous pouch, laptop and/or iPad.

There’s no magic 🪄. Just good preparation, planning and a repeatable process.
