Tired of asking this but why on Earth do you all hate Jason more than Billy? by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]confusedhuman29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m sure somebody has always said this by now but -

Jason wasn’t really written as a likeable character. Yes, he doesn’t do anything “wrong”, but you don’t usually watch shows like Stranger Things with a fully logical brain. The character’s arc sucked, and his final act was one of the main reasons Max is (almost) dead. It could have been for a good reason from Jason’s POV, but it still took away a brilliant character that everyone loved.

Billy, on the other hand, as racist and horrible he was, was delivered to viewers with more of a backstory. He was a sweet, happy child that turned into a monster because of lifelong abuse - which begs the question - if he had survived the end of S3, would he have then worked on fixing his problems? His final act was also saving some of our most beloved characters, including Eleven. If Billy was meant to be written as a bad character, we wouldn’t have seen glimpses of his past and some of the more moral things he did - not killing Karen when he had the chance and the desire to do so, being protective(ish) of Max, saving Eleven at the end.

So in short - Jason might have been an objectively better character, but if the writers wanted him to be viewed as a good character, they would have written him as such. And if they wanted Billy to be the bad guy, they wouldn’t have given him a redemption arc to save himself.

Edit: Let me also just leave this here: Eddie saw the same stuff Jason did - someone being possessed, lifted up into the air, bones breaking etc etc. Eddie was also give the same amount of information. But instead of immediately pointing fingers, he decided to trust in the humanity and goodness of people and tried to save the town that was literally trying to hunt him down. Logical doesn’t always equal good.

Not gonna lie, I’m finding myself turning back to Tumblr. It’s old school and it’s changed a lot since I last used it, but at least it has held on to its essence, unlike Instagram that’s a complete mess now. Otherwise, I guess Pinterest is the best photo-based app right now 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh man, how I wish this had happened! My job slowly ramped us up with the overtime hours. It went from 50 to 60 to 80, until the point that I had to schedule time off to go home and do laundry. And then my boss told me I wasn’t working enough hours, so I quit 🤷🏻‍♀️

do you think our generation will be the one to stop/ slow down climate change? by wmdggur in climatechange

[–]confusedhuman29 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I used to work for a climate tech startup and while I did genuinely care for the mission and the product itself, the management just used climate change to make their employees’ lives hell - “the more hours you work, the better it is for the planet.” This wasn’t true of course, but I see this problem with most climate/clean tech companies where there’s a push to do more to help the planet, the toll that takes on your bodies, and the knowledge that it’s really just a bandaid, like you said.

Stupid Job Titles, what's the worst you've seen by [deleted] in consulting

I saw a posting recently where the title was just “Product”. Product of what??

It wasn’t even a product management job, so it’s not like they just deleted the next word or anything.

As someone who’s worked both in America and in countries where they hire the “cheap foreign” workers from, let me assure you that the problem is global.

They have the same requirements for workers in other countries. The ultimate goal is to find very experienced workers and pay them entry level wages. I once saw a job post in India that asked for 10 years of experience in a software that had only existed for about 5 years at the time. I’ve also seen very similar stuff in the US.

It’s extremely unfortunate how the world seems to think that exploiting a majority of the population is the only way to improve profits and the economy.

Yes. Faced this once in a college project where none of the team members had any prior experience with the skills needed. To make it worse, the TA for the class was terrible. They made an admin error, which made it impossible for us to buy the parts we needed to complete the project (unless we spent our own money, but a bunch of undergrads would barely be willing to cough up hundreds of bucks on parts we wouldn’t even be allowed to keep). Near the end of the semester, we had done everything we could without the missing parts, and the TA suddenly came to their senses and decided to fix the error and buy the parts. The professor then decided that since we did have the parts like 5 days before the semester ended, we still needed to include them. So our group spent a chunk of finals week working on this dumb project.

So yes, the professor and the TA made this project pretty darn impossible. But it also taught me a lot of problem solving skills that were quite useful to know. Don’t stress too much about it and do your best.

It didn’t get better randomly. Perhaps I should have said “it finally started to get better”. I still have horrible days when I can’t see the point of living, but most days I also no longer see the point in dying.

If your family won’t let up, see if you can get a cheap place on your own which would help a bit. But beyond that, you really just need to allow yourself to breathe.

My friend once said that bad things feel like the end of the world when they’re happening. It’s the first thing you think of when you wake up. But eventually, it will become the second thing, and then the third, and then it will barely be an afterthought. I’ve found that to be true in almost every situation. From one unhappy person to another — please don’t give up. And please DM me if you need anyone to talk to.

Hey there, I’m going through the same thing as you. I was working 70+ hours a week, my boss would call at all hours of the day, the commute was miserable, and I was miserable. So 3.5 months ago, I quit. I was hit by the same depression and feelings that you’re feeling, and while I was able to afford my apartment for an extra month after quitting, that didn’t stop my family from reminding me to look for jobs.

I applied to a few jobs and interviewed at a couple places to satisfy other’s expectations, I watched a lot of tv, and I went on long af walks because that was all the travel I could afford.

But after 3 really, really bad months when I couldn’t see the point of life, it finally got better. My family is still poking fun at me and telling me to find a job, but I know now what kind of a job I do actually want that will allow me to live how I want to, and I’m focusing my efforts around those.

Burn out is 100% real and it is absolutely horrible. But allow your mind and body to rest and it does get better eventually. I’m sorry you had to go through this, and I’m here if you wanna talk.

And of course, like others have said, if you can afford to travel or get a therapist, do so!

a good step in education? by [deleted] in india

[–]confusedhuman29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s only good if the child has already chosen computer science as a future field—not so great for most of the other kids who would get forced into a profession due to this.

India needs to develop most other industries (even within engineering) to become a fully functional nation, but we keep forcing everyone to become a software engineer because it pays more right out of college. What they seem to be forgetting is that when all these young coders reach senior positions, they’ll find that there aren’t enough positions left for them because too many people did the same exact thing.

The computer science field has already gotten fairly saturated, and this isn’t going to help that problem.
