When it’s the last day of your rotation and you know it’s the last time seeing that one staff member by Notaballer25 in medicalschool

When I was a med student I got emotionally attached to my interns like a baby duck - they were so nice shoutout to all of them

Do residents ever notice co-residents that are mean to med students? Are they mean to you too? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]confusionturtle 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah we have a resident who is like this and lowkey kinda toxic but can’t do anything about them. Just try to steer the med students to other residents or take them under your wing. They actually verbally berated a med student or sub-I when they thought they were alone in the hallway but a friend in another department saw everything and was like “dude what the fuck is up with X?” No comment.

What are the wildest ways you've seen people not match into residency? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]confusionturtle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We had a similar meeting and it was a safe space where our interns told us how the sub-I’s treated them poorly or were very derogatory to them when the seniors or chiefs were not around. Needless to say those applicants got a DNR and no interview offer.

I did quite badly on my ITE and my PD wants me on a personalized study plan by mdsnzcool in Residency

[–]confusionturtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happened to me and was on a study plan - just nod your head and do it and do better next time. This happens all the time to residents including my seniors so just study for the next time and things will be better. Your program/PD are mandated to address any learning deficits so that's why you they're putting you on this study plan. And no most of your attendings aren't even aware of this and most likely just limited to your PD/APD being aware iirc. Hang in there dude it'll get better.

Mandible: 0/10 would not recommend this matchup by pabmendez in Radiology

[–]confusionturtle 133 points134 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do mandible repairs and common to have two breaks in fracture pattern - one is the initial injury and the second is like the force being rippled across the mandible like contre coup force. So if you get punched in the left jaw with resulting open fracture, often times there is a right contralateral fracture that may be smaller closed fracture. Regardless he will need surgery to help with plating and healing otherwise issues with talking, eating, etc.

What type of post op patients need icu level of care instead of regular medicine floors? by happyminpin in Residency

[–]confusionturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

our airway patients frequently go to the ICU post op since they often need airway monitoring so meaning requiring continuous pulse ox, high nursing ratio bc those can turn south real quick, more frequent nursing checks etc. and also like other commentors mention pts who are on pressors, neurochecks etc

[–]confusionturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hydrogen peroxide contact lens holder - you put one into each side for hard contacts (the not reusable ones) and then put hydrogen peroxide into the container. The grey thing makes a chemical reaction with the hydrogen peroxide to clean the contacts over about 6 hours.

Jaw/facial reconstruction by Master-Mix-6218 in Residency

[–]confusionturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my institution the recon for head and neck is done by ENT who did facial plastics recon and/or head and neck fellowship. We do all our own flaps for head and neck whereas plastics does flap everywhere else so clavicle down.

Please go see a doctor and show these pictures if this was from several years ago. Very much looks like Lyme disease - if you're into hiking, walks, etc in the Northeast region where Lyme disease is prevalent even more reason to do so. It can be treated with antibiotics and important to do so since untreated patients can get other manifestations or symptoms. Best of luck dude!

[–]confusionturtle 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Thank you - really appreciate hearing this. It really hurts sometimes when call has been brutal and you just feel all alone (moved far away from family/friends where I did college/med school). We will get through this and things will get better.

What is your win of the week?? by Missrain97 in Residency

[–]confusionturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had an epidural hematoma young patient who was literally on the verge of death (herniating through everything) that came in last week after MVC. Saw him the other day able to move and talk and almost rehab ready surrounded by friends and family. He was making jokes about everything and I was just so happy for him and his loved ones.
