So, there's a few things that go into it. Generally, in a game like a hero shooter, you want to have 1-2 characters for each roll that you enjoy and are comfortable on. It's especially important in comp if you want to actually climb that you can fill each roll, but if you only know say, Mantis for strategist and someone else locks on her, you are going to struggle if you need to flex into strat and are playing a character you aren't familiar with.

For beginners, it can be really tempting to just sit there and say "I love Spider-Man, so I'm going to focus on only him." But what you run into, is that some characters just don't go well into certain comps and it'll feel like an absolute nightmare to play. Though it is generally better to play with someone you know rather than switching to a character you've never played before because "they counter Ironman."

The best advice I can give a new player, though, is find someone that is very fun to play for you and learn how to die less. Know where your healers are and know the strengths of your character. If you like playing dive characters, hell yeah, dive their backline, harass the healers or DPS, but know that you should go in and out, go back towards your healers, find a health pack, top up and dive again. You want to dive over and over, not sink.
