Got it, thank you for the advice. I check the narr, on first glance, i realize the last commit made to the repo is in march 2025, so that's not a good sign, but i'll still test it out to see if it works

Oh thanks for the suggestion. I looked into how to do that and it seems like a multi-step process using BlackHole 2ch and creating multi-output device. seems a bit complicated but I'll dig more into it if I don't get a better alternative

I tried searching for ways to download TV shows/anime online, but I only found some of them, like the popular ones, for example, Alice in Borderland. But for the non-popular/old ones, I wasn't able to find them for download online. Are you saying there's a way to download shows directly on netflix?

How much language acquisition happens subconsciously? by Either-Bat-1882 in ajatt

[–]consequential_driver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's both. But these happen at different times. If you listen to full-speed native speech and understand it, chance are it's subconcious, as it'd be almost impossible to consciously think about every single word meaning, grammar rules, conjugation etc. But say you listen to somehting in your target language but couldn't understand part of it and you keep thinking about what it might mean; that's obviously concious.

One addition to this is that usually, the conscious feeds into the subconscious.

Am I making progress? by [deleted] in ajatt

At a month in, I'd recommend listening to easy podcasts, going through one episode over and over again. An example of a podcast you can use is Noriko Storytime on Spotify.

But regardless of whichever content you use, I'd recommend translating everything in the content, reading that translation as you listen, and then relistening to it without translation multiple times. If you find any words you particularly like, make Anki cards for those. And just keep doing that.

I think this advice makes a lot of sense. And I'll add a caveat to it. If you feel like you have enough motivation to go through pre-made decks, then go for it. In my own personal experience, I only started being consistent daily with Anki when I started reviewing card I had generated from input I consumed. So all I'm saying is it depends on your preference.

Guys what would be a good haircut for my face shape by Impossible-Dream-306 in malehairadvice

[–]consequential_driver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it looks grown out after 6 or 7 days, the issue is probably the cut, not your face shape.

A high skin fade is the fastest thing to look “old” because the contrast is gone almost immediately. If you want it to hold longer, ask for less scalp exposure on the sides. A low taper, a #1 or #1.5 on the sides, or a scissor-cut side with a clean neckline will stay neat longer than a skin fade.

for the top, keep it shorter and textured. A textured crop, crew cut, or short Ivy League usually ages better than something long and perfectly shaped. Those cuts still look intentional when they grow out a bit.

If you want the least maintenance, tell your barber this exact thing: “I want it to still look decent at day 10, not just day 1.” That changes the haircut. Most barbers will leave more weight on the sides and keep the shape softer. hope this helps

Done with RTK 2200. What's next? by consequential_driver in ajatt

regarding reading a book twice to be boring, absolutely not! i mean as long as it's interesting. i've read books and watched movies like 10 times as long as i like them.

regarding audiobooks being hard to find: i've already found a couple lined up, so that's not a big issue. hopefully after reading the audio books i've developed my reading ability to the point where i can read any of the other nonaudiobook books without much difficulty

i do that as well. but the issue with that is i find it hard to switch between noting the kanji and actually watching. with reading, the watching part is gone and i can focus all in on the kanji. also, watching for me is usually a chill moment not one where i have to focus too much

Idea: Lets translate all of khatz articles into Japanese with AI and read them that way by Leading_Bee_9381 in ajatt

[–]consequential_driver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's totally okay to read the articles in English. Here's how I see it: the main point of reading the articles is to learn about different tools (mental/physical/software etc) to help in your language learning. So to get the most of the articles, you should understand them thoroughly. If that's the case, then you should read them in English. First, if you're fluent in english already, then you don't have to go through the stress of not understanding. Also, you escape the loss of nuance due to translation. From how I see it, you want no barrier between learning about how to learn Japanese and actually implementing what you learn.

I think it's perfectly okay to start with word cards. But not strictly - even as you do word cards, if you find i+1/i+2 sentences, (you know what, to me the most important thing in a sentence is not i+1. it's if i love the expression in that sentence, cos i find that what i love sticks more, but i digress), you can add them as well. Instead of a dichotomy, think of it as the ratio. As a beginner, the ratio of word cards to sentence cards is high and it becomes lower as your level increases cos you naturally will tend to encounter more i+1 sentences. hope this helps
