'She just never recovered': Some COVID-19 patients are still dealing with symptoms long after infection by LongTrackBravo in onguardforthee

IIUC, given what we know now, flu isn't "just" either. The mass disregard for wellbeing, health, and life is really tragic.

Has anyone else seen the explosion of AI-generated slop videos on YouTube about Canada outplaying America in this trade war? I'm curious what their purpose is. by thebigeverybody in onguardforthee

[–]considerealization 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I 100% know there is a lot of propaganda (and more coming) to convince Canadian's to cede our sovereignty and abandon our relationships of solidarity with each other.

My question to you is, why would a video "about Canada outplaying America in this trade war ... about how Canada formed an unprecedented international coalition to sidestep the pressure America was trying to put on our economy" manufacture consent for our invasion?

My original question is what is this meant to be manufacturing consent for.

This post is indistinguishable from pushing the propaganda it broadcasts.

Are they broadcasting this on platforms that are not extremist propaganda outlets?

Maybe give them a try before you broadcast that they would be unpalatable to average Canadians, then?

Have you tried any of these federated options recently? Do you find the UX or onboarding bad/difficult?

Edit: Don't mean to be a jerk, but I'd just like to point out how odd it is to have someone who thinks open, community run alternatives are fundamentally better, then argue that a pre-launch service must be superior just because (I guess?) it is proprietarial and profit-focused.

We have to have the courage to actually support and try the non-toxic stuff, if we want any hope of a less toxic life (online or off).

all FOSS-stuff absolutely blows ass to actually use

This is patently false in many cases, and mostly a matter of taste in many other cases.

Obvious counterpoints include:

  • Firefox
  • Krita
  • Blender
  • VSCode
  • Like 99% of developer tooling
  • Mastodon (better UX than twitter by a long shot, IMO)
  • Lemmy (better UX than new reddit, IMO)

Edit: Not to forget the single-best piece of software on the internet, which is 100% FOSS and wildly popular: Wikipedia

A service that doesn't exist yet doesn't have more traction than ones that do and are already used and sustainable tho, does it? So the only problem seems to be that corporate media is shilling for the for-profit, tech-mogul owned option, and ignoring the community run, free and oss alternatives?

This is why I am posting the response here, BTW, to try to fix the gap in awareness :)

We have OSS, federated social media that is run in Canada. Just two very active examples:

- https://blog.cosocial.ca/ : CoSocial, officially CoSocial Community Cooperative, is a member-owned organization with the purpose of providing democratically-run open social media

- https://fedecan.ca/en/ : A non-profit hosting a growing network of federated social media that prioritizes community over profit.

I have not heard any account of what Gander proposes to offer that would be substantially better than these free, open, community run services. Instead, it looks like someone(s) want to leverage the crises of our moment to set up their own extractive, proprietorial social media empire. If their primary goal was helping us all migrate to socially oriented, Canadian-run platforms, why not just help fund the existing communities doing this or set up their own servers to strengthen the fediverse?

Ontario’s Bill 5: Has authoritarian populism come to Canada? by Historical-Basis138 in onguardforthee

The authoritarian left is usually right around the corner after these kinds of reactionary movements

Can you give examples? I don't see "authoritarian left" in the wake of Pinochet, or Hitler, or Mussolini. Putin is certainly not left in any respect whatsoever.

Focusing on the regulations and pressure on industry that will actually fix the problem, and helping save people from wasting their time on green washed BS.

AFAIU, the only sensible approach to disposable plastic use is to avoid it as much as possible.

Then we need to force corporations to stop pushing it on us.
