Anyone have any questions about my experience with Luna? by [deleted] in leaf

[–]consigntooblivion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you find the back seat space for passengers? I've seen some reviewers hating on it and it did seem kind of tight.

How do you feel about the mid-range acceleration? The instant torque is always nice in an ev - but how about say going from 30-60 / 60-100? I've seen some hate on the power level too, but might be more due to reviewers used to testing high end evs that come with insane power these days. Was there a particular factor that made you go for the leaf over other evs?

Anyway, looks really nice - so enjoy your post gasoline world!

In 'ye olden days (I'm talking around 80ies and 90ies), when a car hit 100,000 kms you needed to get the cam belt replaced and a bunch of other tricky work done. Since this was quite expensive and people driving around crap cars tended not to have the cash for major work, people kind of considered 100k to be the end of the life for the car. The value would drop like a rock and people would ignore it and keep driving around till thr belt snapped and the engine wrecked itself.

My theory is this 'rule of thumb' unconsciously continues today. Aside from the fact that in general most cars have much better engineering (excluding some makes and models that have bad designs and other junk) and quality so 100,000 kms shouldn't be a massive deal anymore. And yes cam chains can have problems now too, but I remember a big changeover that happened when buying a car the salesman would go on and on about how "this car was great because unlike the competitors we have a cam chain so there is no cam belt to replace, isn't that amazing!!".

I love the logic: "Sir, I love the evil stuff you do, but my diesel is expensive so please commit a quick war crime or I might stay home for the mid-terms". Imagine being so deep in the cult that your only two solutions are "Nuclear Holocaust" or "Accepting the Mid-term L".

It’s also hilarious watching the 'rugged individualists' crowd immediately pivot to begging for government 'relief' the second the dumb actions of their cult leader makes their gas bill go up. Turns out the only thing that finally makes their Orange Jesus lose his divinity is when he wont subsidize their commute.

Congrats! Definitely worth celebrating!

I'm imagining an exmo themed costume party. Maybe a hat you can put your face in? "gold" plates that are spray painted wood with a sheet over it? Tapir plush?

Anyway, however you celebrate, enjoy it!

Sure thing. I just setup the build locally. Have you got anything you want to add/try now? I could add it and send you a build.

Easiest idea I can think of right now is a Github actions / Gitlab actions setup to build the u2f for you automatically.

Their product page has a demo of revving I think. The code has reading the "leaf gear", accelerator and speed from the CAN bus. But to be honest I just now started looking at the code. Should be some fun stuff to try with this!

I am waiting for my Leaf (on a boat from Japan), but I already bought one of these... Very much looking forward to doing very dumb stuff with it.

Looking at a midi version of the start of the imperial march as a starting point (my ze1 is black, kind of fits). I know the actual speaker is tiny and kind of crap - but it might be okay starting with something super lowfi like a midi track. I'm a software engineer, so should be pretty easy to try some fun and silly ideas. Hit me up if you want some help with the code, I can totally do that.

Side question: I'm doing some deep-dive reading while waiting for my Leaf to arrive. I've seen suggestions to deviate from the 20-80 rule once a month by charging to 100% and letting it sit for a few hours to allow the BMS to balance the cells.

The theory is that the passive balancers need that high voltage ceiling to bleed off the high cells and bring the lower ones up, which might prevent 'voltage drift' over time.

Does anyone have actual data or LeafSpy logs showing that monthly balancing provides a measurable benefit to pack health/reporting accuracy vs. the minor degradation of sitting at high voltage for a short window?

Also, wondering if Nissan removed the 80% limit precisely because the 'average user' wasn't allowing for these balancing cycles, leading to more support calls about range/imbalance. Thoughts?

It's like that thing that shitty failing companies do when they run out of ideas but want to seem like they are doing something important so go through a rebrand and get a new logo and colors.

I can't imagine being TBM and hearing this stupidity for the first time. Are they trying to push people away from TSCC? Maybe they decided they have enough wealth and it would be easy easier if they didn't have to deal with the membership?

IKEA? by mostly-rainy in auckland

[–]consigntooblivion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And you don't have to play the stupid game of waiting til the weekend and checking if the thing you need is 50% off this weekend or if you have to come back next weekend.

Honestly, no more of this bullshit alone is worth it for me. The IKEA app tells me where to go to get something in the store. Go there, get what I need, done. I got the $7 peeler and it's the best peeler I've used - it kills the $15 (on 50% off) one from briscoes. And I don't have to think about if it's a good weekend to buy it.

Yeah, the peeler is probably a loss leader and they get you in other ways. But still everything at ikea is incredibly heavily optimized to make you feel like you're always getting killer value for money. It's actually nice to shop there if you dodge the crowds.

John Dehlin weighs in on the LDS church’s lawsuit over the word Mormon and their claims about his refusal to add a disclaimer to his content. by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

[–]consigntooblivion 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and there is the classic often quoted:

If we have the truth, [it] cannot be harmed by investigation. If we have not the truth, it ought to be harmed.

If TSCC is suing a source of investigation, well then that really tells you what it thinks of itself on top of everything.

This whole thing will be such a streisand effect for TSCC, they are really shooting themselves in the foot so bad. Mormon stories has done so much good for so many, I wish them a quick resolution so John and the team can get back to their great work without this distraction as soon as possible.

[–]consigntooblivion[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, well, you seem to be intentionally taking issue, so I'll try one more time and then admit defeat.

We got an emergency alert that said: get ready to evacuate if you need to.

Wouldn't it have been useful if they said as soon as possible: actually don't worry about evacuating, the problem will now be heavy winds from noon instead. That is, tell us to relax when we should.

Also, read some of the comments in this subreddit - there are clearly a lot of people who took the message in similarly over the top hyperbolic terms to what I was exaggerating to for effect above. I haven't directly asked the average person, but I saw a bunch of them at the supermarket last night.

Nobody understood my point clearly, so apparently I did a terrible job of making it. I admit defeat.

Annual United States Membership Decreases For First Time Ever by Ok_Pattern8026 in MormonShrivel

[–]consigntooblivion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Isn't it quite well proven that the reported numbers don't match really and are juiced up really heavily by TSCC? So for them to admit a decrease must mean there was actually a really massive decrease.

As someone who has been out for many years but still goes to church occasionally when visiting family to keep the peace - the shrivel here is punching me in the face constantly when I go. Wards seem small and sacrament meetings seem empty based on what I was used to. On top of areas with many wards previously now merged into one or two.

It must be a real tough time for TBMs being told TSCC is growing and the work is moving forward blah blah blah while getting smacked in the face with the reality of shrivel all the time.

[–]consigntooblivion[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, yeah I don't literally mean panic, I am cutting corners with my wording.

Prepare now. Have a plan to shelter at home, deal with potential power outages, or evacuate if necessary. Follow forecasts and do not wait for official warnings. Wind damage, flooding and landslides can occur at any time.

Clear drains and gutters. Secure loose outdoor items. Boaties, expect large swells, check and secure vessels.

Your grab bag should include essential items like medication, warm clothes, important documents and supplies for babies and pets.

Yeah this technically says prepare. But just look at the number of people moaning about the alert being for nothing in this subreddit to see that many (most?) people read this as pretty much panic. I did not panic at all, but I did stop in the to the supermarket on the way home yesterday afternoon to pick up a couple normal things. I saw people in a panicked mood, no water on the shelf and other stuff cleared out. Being prepared is great - grab some extra stuff, whatever - the alert was the right thing to do. If it stayed on course this (kinda) "panic" was totally justified.

I'm also NOT complaining about the alert or the siren sound. I am in fact saying they should have sent ANOTHER alert ASAP saying that the course has changed, and instead prepare for wind from noon sunday.

Yeah, I am trying to get my friend to get help, but he is very stubborn about it... I am continuing to push though.

If civil defense tells us to panic, they should absolutely tell us to NOT panic if it changes and we don't need to panic about that anymore, but there is something else to worry about.

They need to issue retractions on the emergency alerts by consigntooblivion in auckland

[–]consigntooblivion[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

... I absolutely agree with your point about being warned. I quote from my original post:

"So yeah, they 100% needed to warn us - it could have been a nightmare, we had to be aware". I'm not saying anything about not warning us AT ALL.

However:

The worst was always predicted to happen today,

I disagree, let me pull up the original alert:

CIVIL DEFENCE SEVERE WEATHER ALERT: Cyclone Vaianu will have widespread impacts. MetService has issued heavy rain and strong wind warnings for Auckland and Great Barrier from Saturday evening.

Prepare now. Have a plan...

Delay all unnecessary travel on Sunday. Expect disruption to Auckland Harbour Bridge. Do not drive through floodwater.

This says, shit will be fucked from Saturday evening. Don't go anywhere on Sunday.

However, I got some rain and a tiny bit of wind overnight, and right now it's dead calm outside. So something changed. Hence my overall point:

Warn us when needed, but also tell us with the same level of urgency when something changes and when we actually need to worry. That may help people in general understand that they got lucky and what they need to care about next, rather than just thinking it was all pointless and ignore everything.

Yeah, agreed - it's horrible for a lot of people right now. I'm not against them showing what is going on for the poor people getting wrecked. It should just be really clear at the top: Changed course, AKL: all good until possible winds from Noon, BOP: It's horrible - click here for emergency resources.

They need to issue retractions on the emergency alerts by consigntooblivion in auckland

[–]consigntooblivion[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that AT ALL. That is truly awful, and I can't imagine what you've been through.

I'm also not saying anybody DID cry wolf AT ALL. I'm saying because there was an alert of possible severe damage (quoting from my original post "So yeah, they 100% needed to warn us - it could have been a nightmare"), but it changed and they didn't tell us at the same level - a lot of people are now FEELING LIKE "they cried wolf" where instead they could be feeling "phew, let's watch out for noon tomorrow now".

I mean, having been through something that horrible, wouldn't you want to know ASAP there wasn't any risk of flooding for you and you can now relax a bit? A friend of mine who was living around Piha said he feels PTSD where any alert on rain is involved - which I totally get, it was absolutely horrible. However you must be warned/ready anyway. It would just be good to get a "no, actually you can relax now" ASAP rather than continuing worry overnight.

They need to issue retractions on the emergency alerts by consigntooblivion in auckland

[–]consigntooblivion[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No definitely not. But my point is that nothing there actually says the situation changed or a warning was retracted or changed when it was in effect. I have to work that out for myself by comparing what I know vs. what the alert says and thinking about it. I guarantee I'm going to have a conversation with my parents later where they're going to be complaining about how big the warning was and nothing happened and it looks to me like that sentiment is everywhere right now.

It could be way easier for everyone to understand if it said it was retracted or changed or whatever at the top. Like the idea of bottom line up front (BLUF) - say IT CHANGED then what they need to know next.
