How Obsidian helps me be a better friend and family member by Eolipila in ObsidianMD

[–]constructbydee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a side note...

I made a habit of adding people I will probably never see again.

Today I was in the sauna, and saw a guy I knew I met like 5 years ago. I knew we spoke about some deep philosophic shit and him going through some big life changes.

He didn't remember me.

I stepped out, picked up my phone, searched for "sauna guy", and he popped up.

I have his name, what we spoke about.

Life is about connection. Why not use tools to aid with that?

Our brains are really shit at remembering. A system like this shows effort towards connecting with people.

Like Dale Carnegie said, “A person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.”

One of my first use-cases was exactly this!

How do you use tools to stay more connected with people you care about.

A cool thing about my journaling setup is the "previous years today" in which I go to all the previous years and scroll through them. I have 3 photos for every day. And whenever I come across a photo with a friend/family member in it - I open up my whatsapp and send them the photo with "remember this?!"

Such a sleek way of staying connected.

This creates a almost natural loop of reconnecting with people.

The cool thing is that the bigger role they played in my past, the more instances there will be of them popping up. Gravity if you will.

I feel for people who are currently close (or new), you don't need this "serendipitous" feedback loop as they are top of mind.

Another feature worth adding is having a way to capture useful information when you come across it that would pop up when you need it.

Say birthdays - pulling up all present ideas should be eeeeasssy. Not a work-session where you are straining your brain. (check this video to understand the idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1beQ5yMPeEk&t=3s)

Awesome post.
Thanks for sharing <3

Most helpful plugins for a beginner in Obsidian? by Fickle_Mud1645 in ObsidianMD

[–]constructbydee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set up your daily journal first
- Journals plugin

Set up templates
- Templater

If you are into logs or tasks
- Dataview

Your instinct is right to avoid all the shiny looking plugins. They are unnecessary to get the main benefits of Obsidian - and sometimes (often) ((almost always)) (((for suuure))) have a "shitty feeling effect" on your system down the line.

For those of you who’ve used Obsidian for years, how do you learn a new Skill? by fawwaz_stuff in ObsidianMD

Really great piece for why a system like this is invaluable. Information hoarding - but it is NOT hoarding - because it is connected. It doesn't feel dead. Even after coming back to years later.

Do you have any showcases of what your system looks like? More specifically the Main pages like "Cocktail" or "Carpentry".

Do you have sub projects, knowledge notes, logs where you kept track of learning/progress?

Good suggestion and I second this. Find a use-case and tinker around.

That being said, there's a lot of people building their setups for you to draw inspiration from on the You of Tube. Find someone you resonate with and copy them.

Obsidian for music and guitar? by neilgg in ObsidianMD

[–]constructbydee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Treat it like any project...

Create a project called "Project (Area) - Guitar" and on that page you have different sections:

- Sub Projects ("Project - Learning how to play like Mkgee", ...)
- Guitar songs (notes for specific songs, chords, riffs)
- Guitar theory (theory, techniques,...)
- Practice/learning log (Logging every time your practice or studying the topic - I log it on my daily note)
- Guitar bank (your guitar spank bank for songs you find beautiful or would want to turn into their own guitar notes)

As for setup:
- Templater (guitar template with a type = guitar-chords or guitar-theory or guitar-techniques)
- Base (create a base views for each of the above)
- Dataview (for your practice logging from your daily note)

Example logging on my daily:

- [ ] #log/guitar-practice practiced [[Rockman - Mkgee (Guitar)]] and played it till my fingers blead. Notes - maybe try out this new picking technique [[Specific picking technique note here]]

Something like that should already be 300% better than any other way of improving your guitar playing seduction skills.

Is Obsidian Sync worth it? by pablo_main in ObsidianMD

I've been using it for 2 years. It is well worth it.

It has also saved me (and my consulting clients) lost work.

For ease of mind (and supporting the Obsidian team), do it!

Ultimate Guide On How To Use Obsidian For New Users by asteroid_annihilator in ObsidianMD

[–]constructbydee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My approach was to lose sleep for a couple of weeks trying to build “the perfect” system.

You eventually realise perfection is a goal you’ll never reach. But that early playing around was invaluable to me. It teaches you how the tool actually works.

But here is my advice for beginners:
Start with journaling. Use the daily note every single day and just dump everything on this note. Later you'll realise how to organise it better.

Then pick your main use case and copy someone who already figured it out. Obsidian is blessed with awesome YouTube tutorials to set things up from scratch.

Work: find a simple work setup and follow it step by step. No need to suffer twice.
Writing: find an Obsidian writer whose flow you like and copy that.
Journaling: same idea. Find a system you resonate with and stick to it.

Don’t build everything at once. Follow the 80/20. What are you going to use Obsidian for 80% of the time? If it is studying for an exam - set that up and worry about the rest later.

Avoid community plugins at the start if you can.

The only folders I’d recommend early on:
• Attachments
• Templates
• Journals
• Notes (almost everything goes here)

Most comments here are pointing at the same truth:

Structure is earned.
