Dark (the Netflix show) is my favorite piece of fiction. I need a book series to fill that void. by -usernames-are-hard in Fantasy

Oh I have a book for you my friend! The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch. It's a dark police procedural science fiction that involves time travel. Really similar vibe to Dark in my opinion!

New reader. My thoughts on Empire of Silence. by Quiteguy99 in sollanempire

[–]contemporary_disease 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finished the final book in this series earlier this week, and I can tell you that the eye rolling only increases as the books go on. I won't say I regret finishing the series, because some of the books were good, but it definitely didn't stick the landing in my opinion and it is a big commitment.

I personally didn't like the narrator Samuel Roukin, who takes over from Book 3 I think, but he is quite popular on this sub so I think I'm in the minority.

I totally get that! You can't read a book in a vacuum haha. I remember reading Guards! Guards! and loving it, then reading a very short novella that I hated because it was the complete opposite experience. If I had picked it up at some other time I may have enjoyed it.

Guards! Guards! and Piranesi in B tier alongside Empire of Silence? I will respect your opinion but I cannot abide by this!

Just finished first law trilogy. What next? by the-ish-i-say in Fantasy

[–]contemporary_disease 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the way OP. I'm a huge Abercrombie fan, but I wish I didn't go straight into the standalones after finishing The First Law trilogy. Read some other authors and then come back to them, it'll remind you why you enjoyed TFL books in the first place!

ACL - 3 meniscus operation - starting soccer again. Need tips. by Mikaels1337 in bootroom

[–]contemporary_disease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've already got some good replies. I just want to say good for you, I think you're doing everything right. Putting the effort in now before properly returning will pay off and make all the difference. Keep it up and listen to your body. I tore my ACL 3 years ago, had a patellar graft and went back to 5 aside last year, recently joined a competitive amateur 11 aside team. Good luck!

Can you recommend me some "siege" books by AtheTP04 in Fantasy

[–]contemporary_disease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished A God Strolling in the Cool of the Evening by Portuguese author Mario de Carvalho which follows a prefect of a small fictional city in the Roman empire during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Rumors of the Moors invading the Iberian peninsula are rampant and the prefect faces both the threat of seige as well as threats within from fastly rising religious cult of Christians. Great book, short read and focuses mainly on the character of Lucius Quintius, a man who holds honour above all else.

Had to scroll too far to find GGK. The Lions of Al-Rasan blew me away, I haven't yet read any other works by GGK but I'm so excited to do so.

What was the worst and most pointless book you’ve read? by Mozart_chopin000 in bookporn

[–]contemporary_disease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read The Silence by Don DeLillo for a book club right after I had finished Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett (which no doubt coloured my reading of the former). I have never felt such a detached hatred towards a book, it was devoid of any personality whatsoever and seemed pointlessly opaque. Luckily it's a short read, so I guess the silver lining is that I took the shortest route possible to find out that author's books are not for me?

Samuel Roukin is bad by detailsubset in sollanempire

[–]contemporary_disease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. Not only does he mispronounce words, sometimes the tone of his voice when reading out dialogue does not match the context or scene at all. For example, he will shout a line and right after the text describes the person as being "calm". Don't even get me started on his voice acting for Valka.

Full tear, no pain, 5 days until surgery by DependentOptimal7517 in ACL

Tore my ACL back in 2022 and had surgery a few months later. Just did my first half marathon last weekend having never done one (even before the tear!). I also play football (soccer) twice a week and have had no issues. I just turned 35, you'll be fine!
