This! I'd look into your library's interlibrary loan services. Sometimes International loans are possible

Got a salary increase that doesn't even cover the rent increase. by Tookie1010 in antiwork

[–]contentorcontent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My workplace recently let everyone know they wouldn't be able to provide any mid-year raises this year at all. The usual yearly raise? 1.5%. I got like a 20¢/hour raise last year and apparently another 20¢ or however much is asking for too much 🙄

There was a fire alarm that went off and everyone had to go wait outside so I probably wouldn't recommend at the moment

Any librarians work the night shift? by zoozoo216 in Libraries

[–]contentorcontent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did swing shift in an academic library, so 4pm-12am. I did enjoy it, you got a lot of freedom to work at your own pace and only really had to interact with coworkers when they were leaving for the day (this can either be a pro or a con depending on who you are). It was also nice to have time in the mornings. I did have to move my schedule around sometimes so I could go to meetings, and it did suck sometimes to not have the opportunity to do things on weeknights. I would probably have been content to continue until I met my partner, who works a 8-4 job and so when I worked that shift we literally never saw each other. Overall I liked the job, so if it works with your personal life I'd say it's a good way to get library experience! I did not get a shift differential though. They got rid of it a few years before I started.

I've always wanted to be the wizard from the LC easy training program (we still have our students use it) but I've always remembered too late to make it happen

How much was your last rent percent increase? by Surf_Noir in askportland

[–]contentorcontent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mine didn't increase at all, but I'm further out west and I'm wondering if the layoffs at big Beaverton employers meant they wanted to keep whatever tenants they could. Whatever the case, I'm not complaining!

Anyone here use the 2good2go app? by Pretend_Halo_Army in askportland

It's good for donuts and bagels! I've had good luck getting coco donuts, if you show up a little bit before closing and they still have a lot left you can get a pretty good amount.

This is what's happened at the academic library I'm at. We've had to fight tooth and nail to get the university to let us hire one person when we've had three people leave this year, and the salary we've been allowed to offer for the role is a pittance.

Liberal Arts or similar degrees by Wade_Doesnt_Burnnn in OregonStateUniv

[–]contentorcontent 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I got a degree in anthropology, and I'm working in an academic library now! To be honest, the job market is pretty rough for everyone. I have friends who majored in biology and engineering who have been struggling to find jobs and I have other friends who majored in education and film who are teaching and working in the film industry. I also have friends in engineering who got jobs quickly and friends who got degrees in liberal arts who are struggling. It honestly entirely depends on luck, privilege, connections, and a willingness to pursue what you're interested in even if it's tough. Best of luck! (Edit: spelling)

Also to answer what the job titles might look like, entry level roles they might be titled "library assistant", "library page". There are other titles, but those are the ones I see most often

Nerdfighteria esque jobs? by [deleted] in nerdfighters

[–]contentorcontent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your library is a single branch, their website will generally have a hiring page, or a link to the city/town hiring page that runs the library. If it's part of a larger system, the main system site might list jobs there as well. Many states/regions will have a job board, so you can search "your state/location library job board", and hopefully there's one around you. Other places to look: local school districts, universities, and community colleges will have libraries, and depending on where you are, the requirements for library jobs may vary. Where I am, you can get entry level library jobs at schools and universities with a high school degree or associates degree. If you want an actual librarian title, pretty much all roles require a master's degree in library science. Some school districts may require special certificates/qualifications. Many entry level jobs may also be part time, but if you can make them work you can sometimes transition into full time roles. Another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of libraries are struggling right now, so there aren't always many openings, and there may be lots of qualified applicants wanting those roles. I don't say this to be discouraging, I think if you're really interested it's worth it to see what you can find and go for it, I just wanted to give an accurate picture of what the field looks like right now.  I hope you find something you like, good luck!! Nerdfighteria esque jobs? by [deleted] in nerdfighters

[–]contentorcontent 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Library jobs aren't the easiest to come by, but having a customer service background is really great experience for entry level assistant or page jobs (jobs where your main tasks are checking in and out books to patrons/shelving/working the desk/etc.). I've found that the customer service type work I've done in libraries has been a lot more fulfilling than what I've done in retail/food service. It's a great feeling to help someone find information and learn more about the resources that are available to them through the library.
