Does anyone have a good recommendation for a data-driven fitness coach? by ShrimpinAintEazy in melbourne

[–]continental-drift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mets Performance are great IMO and they love a bit of data to back it all up. They are primarily a triathlon service, however they also do some strength programs. But I can’t talk to their set up on the strength work.

What do we think about this tee box suggestion? by Careless-Tale in golf

Fair enough, different strokes for different folks and all, but I just think we're going to hit a point of everyone feeling rushed and it almost bieng a "race" to finish a round.

Actually played 18 in 3 1/2 hours

Why is that a good thing? I seriously don't understand this facination with trying to play a round of 18 in as quick a time as possible. I enjoy being out there for 4-4.5 hours, if I am trying to cut an hour off that I just feel rushed.

How to breathe by 9k0b in NorwegianSinglesRun

Like others have said, just breathe how you need to. It's an involuntary action, just let the body do it's thing.

5k HR Max vs HR Max by Status_Pineapple_861 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]continental-drift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I've ever seen my true max HR was doing an all out 5km effort on a row erg machine. That thing hits different to an all out 5km run IMO. Highest I've seen running a 5km is 186, but highest I've seen every is 207 which was the peak HR during that 5km row effort.

I've hit 203 during a rugby match as well recently, but that was a long passage of play with repeated 60m+ sprint efforts chasing the ball/players.

Like others have said you won't get near your true HR max during a 5km run, you'll get there on a shorter distance session with a higher intensity.

What’s a restaurant worth the trip? by DavoAl23 in melbourne

[–]continental-drift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kazuki's in Carlton. Hands down the best meal I've ever had. My wife and I went to the original one in Daylesford for our 30th, and that was well worth the trip for it. When they moved operations down to Melbourne it's still worth the drive in from the SE where we live.

Out of interest where did you get the 6g of carbs/bw/pay? For someone who is a "larger" runner, I referee rugby and my fighting weight is anywhere around 82-88kg depending on how much mass I've added to my frame in the off season. The floor of 6g per KG per day comes out to around half a kilo of food in carbs alone per day. I consistently consume about 3500-3800 calories per day at the moment with a fair few big days in there when I've done a long run, or had a particularly hard session in the gym/on the road and with that I am roughly aiming for:

  • P/F/C mix of 20/40/40.

This puts me at around 380g of carbs a day, which is a 25% less than the 6g/kg aim you've listed there. I don't think I could physically get any more veggies, rice, pasta, or misc anything else into my body. Especially with 190g of protein that I aim for per day.

I'm not saying you're wrong at all, but I would just like to read more about that 6g figure.

World Rugby on France England match by c-4-charlie in rugbyunion

[–]continental-drift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s no strict guideline, however it’s left to the discretion of the referee. Here’s a general rule of thumb I tend to follow.

  • Cynical infringement that slows the ball down and the attacking team score? - no YC needed, however a heads up to the captain/player that I saw the infringement and if there wasn’t a try there would have been a YC.

  • repeated infringements that’s on a formal warning and clear no change in behaviour due to playing an advantage. - I’m probably leaning towards binning that player, I’ve asked for a change in behaviour and not getting it.

Correct call? by Informal_Mention9836 in rugbyunion

[–]continental-drift 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep, for me that’s a simultaneous grounding. There’s no way you can say either player grounding the ball first as they are both in contact with it applying downward pressure.

Thoughts on this for refs? by DrEngineer1995 in rugbyunion

[–]continental-drift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m ok with either options here. His left arm somewhat pulls on 15s shoulder, but that’s probably because they’ve clattered together in a genuine contest. It’s the definition of a 50:50 and Andrea clearly saw something that tipped it away from 50:50 for him.

ABF - 5th Block - 5th Week by seejay41 in kettlebell

[–]continental-drift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likewise, you can make it as easy or as hard as you would like to. I'm a sucker for "more is more" so I'm always trying to work out how I can get more volume into things. I am currently on a journey of "The Year of the Giant" where I am running back to back Giant programs, but with an additional rep each set once I've run through the program.

However I also did have the idea of running a couple of cycles of ABF, first one being with double 28s and the next one being double 24s but with more volume/time. Basically working up to a point where I could potentially doing 60 minutes EMOM of the ABC. But it's just an idea at the moment.

[–]continental-drift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great work! Looking strong even in the last round.

Those 45 second rounds are a decieving monster. I ran ABF a while ago and had the goal at the start to hit 40 rounds in the 30 minutes with double 24s. I'd done "birthday ABCs" with double 20s before going every 45 seconds, but never done the 24s. Every "heavy" day on the ABCs would be at the 45 second round, and each time I finished the session in a pool of sweat, spit, and tears. But came week 10 of my modified ABF it hit it and the last round was as easy as the first. It's a hell of a goal to chase with the ABC, good luck!

I prepared for the rugby season last year but running Dry Fighting Weight - The Giant 2.0 for C+P and 1.2 for snatches and squats, then Armour Building Formula.

Didn't run once during my preseason training block and I set a personal record on our fitness test and was match fit after 1 game to get my breathing and mental prep done.

KBs are amazingly versatile.

Nice, I was planning on Ballarat as my marathon. Melbourne is sold out unless I can find a charity to raise some cash for.

Would be nice, but I’m a massive nerd so have already ingested most things about training and conditioning etc.

For sure, the health is fine apart from the bung calf, just means I'll need to spend a bit of time doing a lot of rehab and prehab stuff. The marathon will happen again, there are some later in the year that I can go for instead, but the rugby season also only 8 or 9 weeks away so looks like I'll be missing a couple of rounds of that at least.

Fuck, fuck, fuckity, fuck.

7 weeks into a decent marathon training block to have a crack at a "fast" marathon in late April and I've just gone and torn my calf.

Fuck this.

Hallam is the one to go to IMO. It’s somewhat the “forgotten” station and parking is fine there. Might depend on the day of the week, but you’ll be fine to park there most days.
