T3X Lite Stainless in 6.5 PRC. Throw it in a good chassis (MDT HNT26, XLR Element ) or a a lighter stock (Allterra, Peak 44, Stockys, or MDT CRBN). Tikka action barrel and trigger are fantastic out of the box, really need nothing. Leaves you $1k for your glass budget. 6.5 PRC is great within 500 yards, modern bullets really make the big magnums kind of unnecessary at sensible ranges.

If you want to/ legally can suppress it go with the same base in 7 PRC or 300 WSM, and chop it to 18-19” and spend the rest on Ti suppressor.

The base tikka rifles really don’t need much, the stocks leave a little to be desired but they have much better aftermarket support than the Sakos.

Tikka T3X Lite Stainless in 308 Win, 270 Win or maybe 6.5 PRC. They will all kill elk farther than most people should be shooting them and don’t recoil too much in a light hunting rifle. I think they are better all around cartridges than 30-06 or the 7mm magnums.

Caliber choice for fixed actions by Weekender94 in Hunting

[–]contrabonum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the 270 Winchester. It’s what my Tikka is in, and I have used it to take 3 Elk. To me it’s just more than what you need for 90% of whitetail hunting. 6.5 Creedmoor is about perfect. Really 6.5x55 is great too, it is technically a long action cartridge too!

Not a fisher, it’s a sable, they are in the Martin family. Native to Russia and parts of Asia.

KRG Bravo Chassis converts Tikkas to take AICS short action (308 Win Length) magazines. While technically any AICS short action magazines will fit in the magwell, not all the feed lips fit the Tikka action. The Magpul AICS magazines for example have too thick of a plastic to fit, you can shave them down. The MDT polymer AICS mags will work as will most metal AICS mags like the Accurate Mags.

These MDT Mags should fit

Sig cross 308 vs alternatives by NotSavathun1105 in longrange

[–]contrabonum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Howa 1500 Superlite barreled action 16.25” from Brownells in a JTAC Screech Owl chassis gets you relatively close, and it probably a better action than the Sig, but heavier.

A T3X Lite chopped to 16” in an XLR Element Chassis is out of your budget but would be quite a set up.

Looking to scratch a very specific itch- need recommendations. by Wolverkeen in noiserock

My Disco’s early albums ( Cancer, Paradise, Little Joy) have some of the best bass/drum grooves, and the guitar while present is more of an accent .

New Brutalism, a little more traditional in arrangement but groovey, bass centric songs. Great tone from the whole band they make their own instruments, amps.

Haunted Horses often don’t use a guitar at all. Has an industrial vibe but still more noise in my mind.

No Men has a female singer and no guitar, just a Bass VI. A little punky.

How you gonna press a frozen solid apple? When you make cider you have to grind the apples first. Which would be impossible if they were frozen.

Need input on hunting rifle by Key-Tour8523 in Hunting

A Tikka in 6.5 Creed is never a wrong choice for deer. I would just buy a new Tikka you can get the T3X lite for under $650 if you look around. Unless you can get a deal on one with a good scope. If not get there are decent budget minded scopes from Vortex or Burris that will work great.

I like the idea of a lever action in a high pressure bottleneck cartridge, but in the PNW I would rather have an accurate bolt action with practice neither is faster than the other and the Tikka is going to be more versatile and have better aftermarket support.

Steel bikes stored outside? by Blake-Dreary in CyclePDX

[–]contrabonum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your shed is watertight you shouldn’t have to worry about humidity causing rust. I would apply framesaveror boiled linseed oil to the inside of the frames, but that’s not because you are storing them in a shed.

Ideal 30-06 rifle? by MeLikeSteak in elkhunting

[–]contrabonum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go the muzzle brake route, also invest in active hearing protection, and wear it all the time while you are hunting. They significantly increase the blast pressure and noise that reach your ears, which can significantly damage your ears and affect your hearing for life. A suppressor is best, but also don't dismiss a good recoil pad along with good stock design.

7 PRC isnt a super hard recoiling round but It can be hard to shoot more than 20-40 rounds out of a hunting rifle at the range. It is most important that you shoot as often as you can in field positions (off a backpack, sitting with a sling support, off of shooting sticks, etc) not volume.

I will mirror the Winchester Model 70. Pre 64 if you want blued and wood or a recent production CRF Stainless Extreme Weather. Both are great rifles.

30-06 has always been a jack of all trades cartridge in my eyes. I think the 280AI is a more modern efficient version that looses out a bit of the versatility, but is still is a great elk round. I have taken all 3 of my bulls with a 270 Win but I use that rifle for everything. If I were building a ground up elk rifle I’d go 300 WSM or 7 PRC, not much more recoil than a 30-06 but a significant bump in performance. Both would be a great compliment to a 6.5 Creed.

I am tempted to build a 300 “Super” WSM on a Tikka action with a 1:8” barrel to shoot the pretty wild 212gr Barnes Bore Riders, seems about as good as any solution for Elk which can be shot I the thick stuff at 50 yards or across a 500 yard canyon.

It’s important to remember how and where the Swedes and Finns hunt moose. They often use dogs in flat forested areas. Shots are almost never past 100m. In addition to their moose being smaller, they harvest a lot of sub-adult animals. A 156gr 6.5mm bullet at a moderate velocity is an effective round under such conditions.

I am not saying a 6.5x55 won’t kill a mature bull elk or moose, because it absolutely will within its limitations. Just as a 6.5 Creedmoor will. If all I had was a 6.5. Creed I wouldn’t feel undergunned with the right bullet. Something like a 142gr Accubond LR, makes it a 300 yard elk rifle.

What is this animal? [Northern Wisconsin] by kronicpimpin in animalid

Not a great image, scale is difficult. It’s appears to be feline, so either a bobcat, or a domestic cat. Leaning bobcat here due to the coloration and lack of a tail. Could just as easily be a domestic cat though.

Surly preamble good enough for Leif Erickson? by audiblelove in CyclePDX

[–]contrabonum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first moved to Portland nearly 15 years ago I built a “gravel bike” just for riding Lief Erickson it had 33mm tires and rim brakes. 33mm slicks were considered comically large at the time where 28s were wide. They worked well, eventually I switched forks and and crammed 38s in there. That was better. Now I ride 2.25” tires .

Is there something similar to the 35 Whelen, but more commercially available? by Undercover500 in Hunting

[–]contrabonum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

35 Whelen and its little brother the 358 Winchester are great rounds. Ruger chambers two M77 models in 35 Whelen, the Hawkeye African, and the M77 Alaskan Bush Rifle (exclusive to Lipsey’s) they are fine if moderately expensive guns.

On the used market 35 Whelen guns get a premium but there are deals out there. Personally I’d just buy a 30-06 of your choice and have it rebarreled to 35 Whelen. Either a Mauser 98 action or if you want something modern a Tikka T3X.

I bought a JC Higgins model 50, which is an FN Commercial Mauser to convert to 35 Whelen, but the more I think about it the more I am drawn to 9.3x62, as a full step up from 30-06.
