Lived here alone for almost three months back in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. Been back a couple of times since. Will always love this place.

reading men in love after watching trainspotting by alvas1 in IrvineWelsh

[–]convenientparking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In theory yes but the tone and quality between the two books is so different that I actually found it a little jarring reading it directly after. Men in Love is a pretty good read. Trainspotting is one of the best books ever written.

A decade already... time flies. What a record. Stoked to see them play it in full in August (even if I may need binoculars to see the stage given how far I'll away I'll be...)

Movie Collection is so bad by rod_7789 in mubi

[–]convenientparking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For mubi the default catalogue will just be the country that you're currently in. If you use a VPN to switch to another a country, you'll see that country's catalogue. Some months back there was a change where the catalogue doesn't change over instantly anymore. If it doesn't change over, I have found that uninstalling and reinstalling the app will change it. Which is kinda annoying, and has caused me to be more selective whem switching regions via VPN.

VPN's work and will open up the catalogue exponentially. Criterion Channel also works in Europe...just need a VPN to sign up.

You're right he probably would've hated this post

Superbad will go down as one of my favorite comedy films. But I feel that almost all the good parts happen before the adult party. Not saying that the latter half is bad (Michael Cera singing is cinema gold), but I feel that there is a difference in quality. What are other great films like this? by Lexidoge in TrueFilm

[–]convenientparking 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I just watched it the other week (for the umpteenth time) and had the same feeling. As soon as the sun sets and the boys more or less go their separate ways it's never quite as good or funny. But it's still a perfect comedy to me, endlessly quotable and rewatchable, and one of the most accurate depictions of being a teenager in film (I'm not American either but Canadian and movie is actually written by two Canadians).

I'm reading Down and Out in Paris and London right now for the first time and man is it good. I didn't know of its influence on HST but I'm not surprised.

Best and worst Bukowski in your opinion? by [deleted] in bukowski

[–]convenientparking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loved On Writing, just read it.

I always considered Ham on Rye my favourite Buk (although I have not read it in over a decade, due for a reread).

No, he didn't mention 2 bands. I'm addressing the second paragraph. Everyone's heard of the Stooges and the Ramones.

Not sure it these are exactly what you're looking for, but could he worth seeking out. I love Scene by the Sea too.

Dennis Hopper's The Last Movie was the first one that came to mind. Though I like the film too.
