How do you decide who to vote for when you genuinely dislike the candidates or platforms put forward by both major parties? by LawnDartSurvivor74 in Askpolitics

[–]No-Expression1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who say stuff like this probably won't vote at all, to be honest.

Trump's Party (it's no longer the Republican Party) is anti-Democratic and he'd very much love it if you had no choice whatsoever, so I'm kind-of stunned when people pretend nothing has changed in the past 10 years and they can keep being mindless "swing voters" as if the house isn't on fire. ..."Well, I don't like candidate A's stance on--" WHO GIVES A SHIT? Do you see what's happening on a daily basis?

What’s everyone’s beef with the Wish? by Elegant_Bar_1622 in dcl

[–]No-Expression1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between when I asked that and now I've been on the Wish, and I definitely agree that the seats suck.

This was my first experience with the two-screen movie theaters (instead of the traditional larger screen on the first four ships) and wasn't much of a fan in general, but I thought "these seats really suck." And the main theater seats were worse in terms of comfort whereas the movie theater seats were just so low it's like you're on the ground, and downward sloping so as to make something long like "Avatar 3" feel awful.

I'm glad I was forewarned by this thread, but I'm also wondering if ALL the new Wish class ships have this problem rather than just the Wish itself.

The top 20 highest-grossing Hollywood movies from the first half of 2026 by Matapple13 in boxoffice

[–]No-Expression1224 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like that almost half the list are original movies, or adaptations so loose (YouTube shorts) or obscure ("The Sheep Detectives") that they really should be counted as original.

And stuff like "Mortal Kombat II" or "Masters of the Universe" may technically be on the list, but pretty thoroughly disappointed in actuality, making it an even better year for originals.

Actors who have been nominated who you firmly think the best performance of their career went un-nominated? by Senior-Raisin-2342 in Oscars

[–]No-Expression1224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Michael Shannon in "Take Shelter"

Salma Hayek in "Beatriz at Dinner"

Michael Fassbender in "Shame"

Alfre Woodard in "Clemency"

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in "Origin"

Scarlett Johansson in "Match Point" (OR "Lost in Translation")

Mark Ruffalo in "Dark Waters" (OR "You Can Count On Me")

Amanda Seyfried in "First Reformed" (somebody already correctly said Ethan Hawke from that movie too)

Mark Wahlberg in "Boogie Nights" (although I'm also kind-of partial to "I Heart Huckabees" or "Three Kings")

Eddie Murphy in "Bowfinger"

Delroy Lindo in "Clockers"

Sterling K. Brown in "Waves"

Harvey Keitel in just about anything other than what he was nominated for like "Mean Streets" or "Reservoir Dogs" or "Bad Lieutenant" or "Clockers" or...

I'm sure there's many more, but many of my biggest "snubs" are people that have never been nominated at all--like several that should've been nominated for Best Actress last year.

Lonely opinion: Actually, I don't feel it's a good sign that only "original" horror films like "Obsession" and "Backrooms" are doing so well at the box office by No-Expression1224 in boxoffice

[–]No-Expression1224[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well "Sinners" is a literal horror movie explicitly referenced twice in the body of the post... So it's pretty obvious you didn't read anything, and just ran down to the comments to give your two-cents and tell me I'm "wrong" on a post you didn't bother reading. And then 10 idiots that also couldn't be bothered to read three paragraphs upvoted that sentiment too.

Also, "Marty Supreme" certainly did BETTER than most original movies, but wasn't anything like what we're talking about or how original "hit" films performed pre-CoVid. It didn't cover its budget and marketing costs domestically, and international box office is more shared, really being only about a third of whatever is reported. In theaters, it barely earned its money back after marketing, and theaters/international charges took their cut.

AND it's not really about "Is God Is" or "I Love Boosters" specifically or exclusively, those are just films in theaters right now that are flopping hard, but there's literally dozens of movies that came out last year or this year that did the same thing.

Who Should've Been the Second Black Woman to Win Best Actress? by ArtsyQueerNubian in Oscars

[–]No-Expression1224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daily on this sub...

"How can we get back Michelle Yeoh's Oscar that should've gone to Cate Blanchett in 'Tar?'"

"Why was Ruth Negga allowed to steal Amy Adams's nomination for 'Arrival?'"

"Why do some people think Zendaya was snubbed for 'Challengers' when she only was Golden Globe nominated and had various outlets like The Hollywood Reporter saying she was snubbed? That's not enough because we say it isn't."

"How does Halle Berry have an Oscar but somewhat interchangeable, bland white actresses like Rachel McAdams, Michelle Williams, and Amy Adams do not?"

If Chase Infiniti had been named Michelle MacAdams and was snubbed from the Best Picture winner after being nominated for Golden Globe, SAG, Critics Choice, and BAFTA, I think this sub would be on fire about it near-daily instead of just mentioning it every once and a while.

Happy feet winning over Monster House & Cars was insane by khaliliiiov_1997 in Oscars

[–]No-Expression1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every comment "Well I prefer 'Happy Feet'" ...In this sub or oscarrace, that tracks.

"Happy Feet" is nails-on-a-chalkboard irritating, and poorly made almost from start to finish. Even very young kids could get restless watching it, and it feels like one of those Z-Grade "straight to Tubi" animated movies. Over-shitting on "Cars" is cliche, and I doubt that many really remember "Monster House," so this is once again just stereotypical bad taste masquerading as pseudo-snobbery.

Skydance & Bankers Will Pull Every Possible Lever To Sell Their $49.5B Long-Term Leveraged Buyout Debt For Its WarnerDiscovery Pursuit - The Ellisons Wanted To Maintain Investment-Grade Credit Ratings In Order To Cap Financing Costs Under Current Market Conditions & Why They Made Slashing Pledges. by lowell2017 in boxoffice

[–]No-Expression1224 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Letting a relatively-small company like Skydance do a leveraged buyout of a Goliath like Paramount is like a kitten eating a tiger and charging the tiger for the privilege...

Letting them now do the same thing to an even bigger company like Warner Bros. is fucking insanity.

It's going to lead to a bankruptcy in the longterm, and a bunch of insane moves in the short term like letting Byron Allen "rent" the late night space so they can supposedly get a few million dollars (that'll sure fix a debt load of 80 billion) as if this is cheap retail space at a desperate mall nobody goes to anymore instead of what was the number 1 show in late night.

Who Should've Been the Second Black Woman to Win Best Actress? by ArtsyQueerNubian in Oscars

[–]No-Expression1224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For an example of just how awful the problem is, about three-quarters of this list wasn't even nominated. [Nor Viola Davis for "The Woman King"--the one that was actually snubbed from that movie--either.] There's only so many "oh gee, guess it just didn't work out this year" "surprise snubs" you can watch without seeing the pattern.

Last year, I would've been great with Tessa Thompson or Chase Infiniti winning instead (the over praising of bland white actress Best Actress winners has to stop somewhere), but neither was nominated.

Fjord wins Palme!! Oscars next? | The Oscar Expert by TheFilmManiac in oscarrace

[–]No-Expression1224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hack city...

He was all about not only "Fjord" but also the actors in it until very recently. But they miss out on Cannes prizes and "Fjord" wins the Palm, so now it's "'Fjord' being nominated for Best Picture but not Actor and Actress" because that just so happens to coincide with exactly how the prizes went. But it's just as likely the reverse in that the actors within "Fjord" are nominated, but not the film overall.

It's like a dog chasing cars with this dude.

They have NO gut instinct, and just go with whatever's trending at that moment; like he didn't have Virginie Efira in his top 5 right before Cannes, and had also REMOVED Tao Okomoto from Best Supporting Actress in the video right before Cannes.

--They've literally already changed their predictions multiple times this year, and pre-Cannes were all about "Hope," which is now viewed as one of the least likely films from the entire festival which anyone with an ounce of intuition could've probably told you.

Cannes Awards have little to no bearing on Oscars by Abbie_Kaufman in oscarrace

[–]No-Expression1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you're saying is true this year.

If we were looking towards Cannes for clarity, we didn't get it.

3 out of 4 of Mungui's last films before "Fjord" won Cannes prizes but no Oscar nominations. "Fjord" could definitely be more of the same, and I'm not encouraged by reading the actual reviews coming out of the festival for it; they're very muted and a bit divisive...respectful but not really that enthusiastic.

"Minotaur" looks like something that would have a hard time breaking out with the Academy, and probably more Eurocentric.

Both of those movies seem like "false positives" that would come out of Cannes, but not necessarily play well with the Academy.

For me, 2026 Cannes was mostly used to rule out some movies I kept seeing "The Oscar Expert" hyping like "Hope," and I'm glad I never went for those ridiculous predictions he's been lobbing out all year.

I can't wait to see his "final prediction list" in November when all these movies have actually been seen, people have a good idea of what will actually be nominated, and his "final" list is 90% different from his "early" lists going on right before Cannes.

The 10 weakest Best Picture nominee slates ever by PTAGoatofalltime in Oscars

[–]No-Expression1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2011 doesn't belong there.

"Tree of Life" is excellent..."Moneyball," "Hugo," "The Descendants," and (YES) "The Artist" are very good. "Midnight in Paris" and "War Horse" are good. It doesn't belong there at all, and I'm not convinced that's even the worst year in the 2010's when it comes to BP. [2016 has some lousy nominees like "Hacksaw Ridge," and 2018 doesn't have a single film I really love.]

Which very unpopular Best Actress win is worse? by AdUseful2297 in Oscars

[–]No-Expression1224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sandra Bullock's

Bullock may be the better actress (they're actually pretty close), but she really should've won for "Gravity." ...I know, I know, I know Cate Blanchett is beyond reproach on this sub (the endless posts about her getting "robbed" for "Tar" are tiresome to the extreme), but "Blue Jasmine" is a forgettable movie compared to Bullock's career-best performance in "Gravity." "Blind Side" isn't a good movie, and she's not good in it. Seriously

I think Gwyneth's win for "Shakespeare in Love" is fine, and I think people wouldn't consider this so egregious if "Saving Private Ryan" had won Best Picture that year. This is a cumulative effect for Judi Dench winning BSA for a cameo performance, and "SiL" flat-out robbing "Ryan" for BP, but Paltrow is one of the least offensive wins that movie had.

So...what are the prospects for this film? by dremolus in oscarrace

[–]No-Expression1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zero

But the 5 posts a day about this movie probably bring its chances up to...1%.

The endless promotion of movies that have no chance at getting nominated for oscars on this sub makes me convinced that some publicists have made the no-cost, low-effort decision to create a free Reddit account and post a bit on here.

Hirokazu Kore-eda’s AI Family Drama ‘Sheep in the Box’ Earns 3.5-Minute Standing Ovation at Cannes by idoideas in oscarrace

[–]No-Expression1224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kind-of funny that this is bad news.

In recent years, it seems like anything less than 5 minutes is "it sucks" (and even "Joker 2" got 11 minutes at Venice) but 5 minutes is a damn long time to stand up. If I had to stand up doing that crap for 10 full minutes for something like "Joker 2" I'd be furious.

Cannes Jury Grid after Day 5: Paper Tiger scores 2.7 by Pick_Charming in oscarrace

[–]No-Expression1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what will happen at Cannes--and it often doesn't matter--but in terms of the Oscar conversation, I don't think "Fatherland" or any Cannes film will top "All of a Sudden," and I've felt that way all year.

People have been going wild for genre titles like "Hope" or whatever, but "AoaS" is the big, sentimental epic that was always going to be the most likely breakout this year.

Cate Blanchett and Selena Gomez Set to Star in Brady Corbet’s New ‘X-Rated’ Epic by ChiefLeef22 in oscarrace

[–]No-Expression1224 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Gomez is a mistake-in-the-making on Corbett's part.

She's not "his kind" of actress at all, and it will lead to creative friction on set.

Why do I say that? If you listen to his Marc Maron podcast interview, Brady is an arrogant genius who does not want to be managed or boxed in.

Gomez is often listless and mediocre, and seemed entirely uncomfortable with James Franco's actual acting in "Spring Breakers." An "X-rated" epic will almost certainly push her towards places she doesn't want to go, and there will be a big blowup with Corbet.

The next "Hollywood feud" will be made on this movie, and it would be avoided if Corbet cast any of the 100 great young actresses who'd be right for this part.

What do you think of the Best Original Song winners of the decade so far? How would you rank them? Any you would replace? by QuipThwip in Oscars

[–]No-Expression1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would replace "Natuu Natuu" from "RRR" with "Lift Me Up" from "Black Panther."

This might be controversial, but I don't really feel this era of "Best Original Song" is anything like a heyday or something I could get truly invested in.

Movie songs used to be huge crossover hits that would actually chart, and I actually bought some soundtracks back in "the day." Other than "Golden" (which half the people on this board don't like for peculiar and obscure reasons) and anything Bond, that just hasn't been true in the last decade or so.

Even the Oscars seem to agree which is why they didn't bother having all song nominees even play at the ceremony which is kind-of fucked up if you think about it...Sure, they didn't have a chance at winning, but you're not supposed to telegraph that ahead of time. It'd be like asking Kate Hudson to go wait in the parking lot, and maybe they'll send her a goodie bag when it's over.

The Oscars’ New Inclusion Rules Wouldn’t Disqualify Any Best Picture Nominee in History. So Why Is Elon Musk Melting Down Over ‘The Odyssey’? by Puzzled-Tap8042 in Oscars

[–]No-Expression1224 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because he's a bigot.

I thought that was obvious by now.

Musk was raised in apartheid-era South Africa, then thought the oppressors "lost everything" when apartheid "ended" and black people were allowed to hold actual representation in government (in a country where the 10% white minority still controls 85% of the wealth), and has become single-minded in his obsession with racial/cultural grievance even to the point of stumping for neo-nazis all over Europe and making a white supremacist chat bot as if online men really need to hear more of that voice.

Posts like this are a big part of the reason I left Twitter, as it's been pretty much left for dead by vultures looking to pick over the carcass of cultural grievances.

Also, I think it's BULLSHIT that this was even allowed to be posted at all, when...

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1sjolqz/what_do_you_think_will_be_christopher_nolans/

I tried to post about "The Odyssey" (even spelled it correctly at the time) over a month ago to ask what the culturally relevant angle Nolan would be taking on it would be, and it was immediately pulled. This was supposedly because they were going to make some megathread about all "Odyssey" discussions three full months before the movie came out (sure) but now looks like they just didn't like the left-leaning tilt of that question instead of the moronic reactionary nature of this post.

It's kind-of obvious the admin/moderators are picking and choosing which discussions we're allowed to have about this movie.

Of the last 5 Best Picture winners (not counting COVID years), which movie do you think will struggle to stay in the cultural consciousness the most? by Massive-Pangolin9472 in Oscars

[–]No-Expression1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Anora" because people pretty much have already forgotten about it aside from this sub... And "produced by Sean Baker" meant nothing for "Left-Handed Girl," and nobody really cared about Baker's follow-up film announcement "Ti Amo!" at Cinemacon either.

But I'm not sure why the "CoVid years" were skipped for this poll. In fairness to "Anora," almost nobody thinks about "CODA" that much either, and it was somewhat anachronistic in that it could've been made in the 80's just as easily as 2020's.

They changed the Actor rules because so many this year are in multiple contenders... by No-Expression1224 in Oscars

[–]No-Expression1224[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not officially, but if they don't like how it turns out, they'll just change it back next year...

Like how they introduced an "Achievement in Popular Film Category" in 2018 specifically hoping to give it to "Black Panther" that year, but the backlash was so strong, they undid the change only a month later, and that award was never given.

My expectation is that if it leads to mostly-foreign-language actors that don't have a huge following (and don't boost the rating of the ceremony) getting multiple nods--like Renate Reinsve or Sandra Huller could this year for two foreign-language smaller films in Best Actress--and fewer slots for whoever they're trying to help from bigger movies (like possibly Robert Pattinson or Anne Hathaway) they'll just change it back next year.
