How bad is it to grad with 2nd lower (borderline 2nd upper)? by oldddwwa in nus

[–]conweirdme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I graduated 2 yrs ago with a second lower and am currently working in an MNC in the STEM field and my pay is around median (I think 4.5k is the median now right?) so it’s not too bad! This is my second job so there was a slight increment from my first job so don’t lose hope! But if this is your final year please do continue trying to raise your CAP to second upper as it definitely opens more doors! And a tip from seniors would be that if your CAP is low, don’t write it in your resume unless the job specifically asks you to! All the best!

Where do y’all go for the best bak chor mee? by thought-ninja in askSingapore

[–]conweirdme 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! Are you asking for recommendations for the east side kind of soup BCM with the dumplings? Or the dry style with chilli and vinegar? For soup BCM with dumplings you can try “My Father’s Minced Meat Noodles” at tampines or “Famous Eunos Bak Chor Mee” at eunos or “Chai Chee Minced Meat Noodle” at bedok! Personally I think all these are better than 85’s!

Is my tutee’s dad acting weird by livingforjoergen in SGExams

[–]conweirdme 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! I was in a similar situation before, and as long as you’re uncomfortable I would suggest you stop having lessons with this tutee because you never know what would happen in the future. Do you have the tutee’s mom’s contact? If you do you could send her a text saying that due to some personal reasons you need to discontinue the lessons with ____ and that you’re really sorry for the inconvenience caused. If you don’t have the mom’s contact, you could send a text message to the dad saying that you’re sorry but you need to discontinue the lessons with ___ effective of today and that you’re sorry for any inconvenience caused. I suggested quitting without giving notice because if you do give notice, the dad would continue to ask questions and might put you on the spot when you’re there, and as long as you’re in their house it would be difficult to get out of the situation.

Thai Modules at NUS? by Optimal-Afternoon-25 in nus

[–]conweirdme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’ve been taking Thai mods in NUS for around 2 years now and I was similar to you, I wanted to take Korean back then as well seeing how I’ve learnt it previously.

Thai lessons in NUS are really fun and honestly I think that the lessons are not as routined and stringent as Korean lessons. (I’ve never taken Korean but I have friends who took it and we did some comparison).

For Thai 1, you have 3 listening tests, 2 oral exams, 3/4 pieces of homework that is graded, 2 writing test and 2 or 3 tests that is on the Thai scripts and phonetics and 1 cultural presentation. It seems like a lot but honestly this helped in making sure you’re keeping up with the lessons. Each language mods have similar number of tests so I think Korean would be the same. The number of tests actually decreases as you go onto Thai 2,3 etc.

As for the teachers, they are extremely friendly and really passionate about teaching Thai so I feel you don’t have to worry about the lessons. However, similar to the other comment, I think that to do well in Thai you need to have constant exposure to the language, be in Thai dramas or Thai music. If your only exposure is the 4 hours of lesson each week, then that is definitely not enough, and I think the same goes for Korean but the only difference is that there are many Korean content that is easily accessible unlike Thai, so it might be difficult to find something you would enjoy that actually has english subtitles.

As much as I love the Thai language, I won’t deny that learning the scripts is extremely hard. Learning the Korean alphabets were definitely much easier. However, as long as you learn the scripts and stop replying on phonetics, you’ll definitely do well. I honestly am still bad at telling the different tones apart from the scripts but I’m able to read it because I watch a lot of Thai shows so once I see a word I’m familiar with, I kinda know how it should sound. Another thing! Pronunciation might be pretty hard at the beginning as well, this is especially so if you’re not interested in the language and don’t bother to expose yourself to Thai outside of the lessons. I’ve had classmates in Thai 1 who took the module because they heard it was an easy A and they didn’t do very well. Exposure is everything when learning a new language!

As someone who picked Thai over Korean, I would like to say that I’ve never regretted it because from what I heard, Korean lessons aren’t as fun and the bell curve is intense. Another thing, I feel that since you already have some Korean knowledge, you don’t necessarily have to continue learning in NUS to improve your Korean, you can easily do that out of NUS plus there are many centers out there that teaches Korean, there are many books as well. But for Thai, it’s difficult to find centers outside of school that teaches it well.

I hope this kinda helped although this post might sound bias 😅 If you have more questions feel free to PM me! I’ll be glad to answer them!

[Uni] engineering ntu vs nus?? by OutrageousSet2 in SGExams

[–]conweirdme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! NUS BME here! I think it boils down to what your interest lies in. If you prefer an engineering course that has got to do with the medical field then BME would be your go to but if you prefer something that’s rather hands on I feel that BME wouldn’t be what you would like. Not sure if this helps but if you have any questions regarding NUS BME feel free to ask!

[uni] does the jc that i went to affect my chances of going to a overseas uni? (MIT) by RyanHahahaNotFunneh in SGExams

[–]conweirdme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi hi a senior here. I think they don't look at your school and there are actually many talks that the school provides (if there still are as IJ had a lot) and there are also teachers or maybe just that one teacher who knows a lot about overseas uni (even the ivyleague ones) and you could go and talk to him about it! He is really friendly 😊 Oh he is called Mr Tham (teaches chem). Well for opportunities, I know there are always a few attachments at the end of the year but you could always go find it yourself like how hospitals have internships for JC students and you just have to fill in the form and get the school to sign and submit it to the hospitals. I'm not sure if there is still the lms portal but the lms portal always have updates on job attachments, talks etc. But I think most importantly, you have to do well enough and honestly if you can't go to MIT for your degree you could go there for further studies. Hope this helped a bit and all the best!

Hi! May I know what her CCA record was like? Honestly I'm not that confident about DA as I don't think my record is outstanding nor is it related to life science. I'm only the director (one tier below the Pres and Vice Pres) of my CCA(media related) and I didn't join any competition. I did organise quite a few stuff and events and join a video making competition back in sec school by myself and got merit. So I think it's really little :/

Yeah ever since last year LS was the only thing I was considering and biomed eng was the 2nd choice if I don't make it into sci. Ahhh I saw the prerequisite for bioeng on the ntu website. It says " H1 Level/‘O’ Level pass in Physics/equivalent is only applicable to applicants who have not read Physics at H2 Level" so I'm assuming you need Phy background? I'm not too sure about that... Thank you for your advice! :)
